"I guess my head is still stuck there. Thank you for not informing my parents about this yet. I want to explain everything to them myself when we go back," Tang said gratefully.
Mei Zhen gave him a reassuring smile and turned to go out.
"By the way, you never told me. What were you doing in Moganshan today? Did you drive up with Wei?" he asked her retreating back.
Mei Zhen froze. This was the question that she had been dreading and it came sooner than she thought. One part of her had been relieved that no one had gotten hurt badly by Fu, but another part was fervently praying that he doesn't get caught by the police. Had she known that he was going to behave like a complete psychopath, she would have never approached him. Now that the things had normalised, wait a second…
She spun around as soon as it hit her.
"You…you know who I am? You got your memory back? When? Why didn't you say something?" she demanded in jubilation.
He replied brusquely, "this evening, while I was at Jia Li's."
"Oh! I am sooooo happy and relieved. Finally things would go back to normal now. It has been really tough for me for the past few days, you know," she said petulantly.
This wasn't the time to have a discussion with her about the future. He had originally thought of making Jia Li realise about their feelings for each other and in the process, make everyone see the same thing as well. It may have been a poor choice to make but he disliked confrontations.
Secondly, he knew that Jia Li wouldn't accept him if he walked away from his marriage because of her. This way, unwittingly, unknowingly, she was partly responsible for it. Tang grimaced at the thought that if she ever got to know this twisted thought process of his, she would probably kill him with her bare hands. He hadn't even mentioned this thought to his sister and Ethan.
"I am tired and want to rest for a while. Why don't you go back as well? Where are you staying, though?" he asked.
She fumbled to give him an answer lest he asked her again about the reason for her coming to Moganshan in the first place. Thankfully, Chu walked in at that moment, saving her from replying.
"You are still awake? I know I should have insisted upon the Doctor giving you a sedative as well. Have you looked at yourself in the mirror? Only actors in movies look dashing with a black eye, broken teeth and swollen lips. Unfortunately, you look terrible. Thankfully the fractured hand didn't suffer any more breakages or the cuts he inflicted upon you were superficial. But I know it for a fact that you are in pain. Your hand is clenched tightly, trying to supress it. Why must you be so difficult to take care of, hmm?" she scolded him with a resigned sigh.
A fond smile broke on his face for the first time in hours. He gestured her to come closer and gave her a tight hug. He sent up a prayer of gratitude for bringing Jia Li and him out of the horror and back to their loved ones.
"I am sorry for the fright you guys got today. I promise not to cause you any more worry. I am going to sleep now. You and Ethan also go back to the hotel. If the doctor agrees, we shall all go back to Shanghai tomorrow," he told her.
Mei Zhen quietly made her escape with the two of them.
Next Morning
"I am absolutely fine. I don't want to stay here. Hospitals make me feel sick," Jia Li was arguing with Wei.
"You are such a bossy woman. Just because I let you get away with most things, you think you can simply override whatever I say," he replied with mock severity.
"You both are creating so much ruckus that it can be heard till the road outside the hospital. Just think about other patients in the hospital, Jia Li," Tang stood at Jia Li's room entrance and said with a touch of dry humour.
Despite Wei's presence in the room, Tang couldn't summon any irritation at the moment. He was just GLAD to see Jia Li alive and animated. He had peeped into her room at least thrice last night, before the nurse threatened to call the doctor and complain about him not resting. How badly had he wished that it was him holding her hand as she slept instead of Wei. But Tang was grateful for his presence in Jia Li's room, especially with Fu still on the run.
"Are you feeling as terrible as you look?" Wei asked him, surveying the various shades of red, purple, mauve and black on Tang's face.
Jia Li nudged him for the mean comment, "how is the pain? What did the doctor say?"
"Shouldn't that be my question to you instead?" he answered with a smile.
