The next day Zaos left the room before Milliendra could wake up to check things outside. He trusted Aleni's report, but he still needed to see things by himself. Naturally, the number of guards during the day around the castle was pretty low since many of them patrolled across town, but what really caught Zaos' attention was the twenty meters tall walls.
"It seems that in the past, this kingdom had some paranoid rulers…" Zaos thought.
From what he knew, that country didn't face wars many times in the past two thousand years. Zaos knew that it was better to be safe than sorry, but… Regardless, even for him, jumping over those walls will be a hassle. If there are demons inside it, he will have to be careful and finish all of them before the battle escalates too much. Fortunately, he had the right tools for that…
After that, Zaos decided to check the weapon shops of the town, but most of them were closed, and the ones open were almost empty. The quality of the weapons was sub-par since the best had been sold to help in the war. Zaos returned to his room much sooner than he had expected. While he needed to confirm and check a few things more, that thing could be confirmed over the course of the next few days.
There wasn't much to do inside the room either, and since Milliendra didn't want to leave since she didn't like crowds, Zaos had to play with her inside. Still, even for that, they had limited options. In the end, Zaos decided to let her spend the week learning how to charge magic stones. That was what he had planned for her for the rest of the week… but she learned that after just one hour.
"Did you notice something this early in the morning?" Aleni asked.
"No, I was too far away to feel anything," Zaos replied. "Anyway, don't worry too much about it, I already have countermeasures against them."
Once again, Again, Aleni left after dinner when Milliendra was already sleeping to gather more Intel. This time, she went to check what the inhabitants of the city were thinking and saying about everything regarding the war and the royal family. As for Zaos, he decided to resume from the point he stopped last night. He already managed to do two things with mana without activating any proper spell. Those were moving his left arm and then recharging magic stones, so he was on the right path of developing his own type of magic. However, things wouldn't get any easier from that point on.
"Since my goal is to make sure that the demon god won't mess with Millie, then I guess should focus on finding a way to seal her aura while I protect her mind," Zaos thought. "I guess I can't just skip steps when it comes to magic…"
Trying to head in a straight line toward his goal was nearly impossible. Zaos needed to learn and practice the other uses of magic more before he could manage to do something so specific… it was a pain, but Zaos returned to the basics. Before anything, he tried to mimic the effects of his support spells like Protection and Magic Barrier. Although he knew how his mana worked since he was more or less specialized in support magic, replicating them was more difficult than Zaos thought, since once again, he needed to have a clear visualization of what his mana was going to do.
"I suppose going for offensive magic first will be better…" Zaos thought.
Once he decided that, Zaos managed to see some results. Making mana leave his body was something that he got used to doing after recharging so many magic stones. While making the energy do complex actions were difficult, he could make his mana gather in a single place and take a round shape quite easily. After some point, Zaos even managed to see his mana in its most natural form appearing in reality due to its concentration.
"I guess I need to see how this can affect the physical world," Zaos thought while he was checking the small sphere of mana floating above his right hand.
Zaos couldn't exactly attack anything right now, so he just made the sphere approach his right leg. However, his mana was absorbed, and nothing happened… Without any choice, he created an even smaller sphere and then made it touch the wall of the room. It didn't make any noise, but the sphere destroyed the place it had touched completely, turning a small part of the wall into dust.
"I guess this looks promising…" Zaos nodded to himself.
Once again, just like when things were starting to get interesting, Aleni returned. Zaos waited for some interesting pieces of information to come from her mouth, but she just shrugged.
"Nothing?" Zaos frowned.
"Yes, it seems that the king has made an apparition two months ago and he didn't look weird in anyway," Aleni replied. "Two of his sons are also fighting in the frontlines and they are the ones who had most influence in this country after the king."
"What about the other members of the royal family?" Zaos asked.
"The king has only those two sons and apparently, they are competing to see how wins the war to become the rightful king, he doesn't have any other heirs, and as far as I had heard, the queen has no political powers," Aleni replied. "Still, I smell trouble in the castle… I don't think that someone like a king would follow the commands of a subordinate who had been taken over by the spirit of an ancestral follower of the demon god, but…"
"I suppose that makes sense…" Zaos rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "Well, we still have five more days to collect intelligence. So, don't worry about it."
Although Zaos said that, he couldn't help but wonder what he was going to find inside the castle. The previous demon used some type of dark magic that seemed weirdly powerful… maybe if Zaos could study their magic, he could find another way to help Milliendra since that type obviously wasn't passed to the next generations, but why?
