"So, is Kyle not the father of your baby Jacy? And didn't you go out drinking with EZ recently? Are you telling me you went out drinking when you were nearly three months pregnant?"
Yeah that was some hardcore anger coming off of Laurell right now. She was probably not angry about Kyle potentially not being the baby's father. No, she was upset on my unborn baby's behalf. She thought that I was being irresponsible.
"No, Mom, Kyle is the father of my baby. I only got pregnant the night before I went out with EZ. I didn't know yet and I only had one drink that night."
"Jacy, sweetheart, if you just got pregnant about two weeks or so ago then you would just be finding out. And you would definitely be due around February." Bechard was trying to confirm what it was that his wife had been trying to tell me.
"Yes, all of that is true for normal people, but I am not normal." I was trying my best to break this to them gently. I didn't want them flipping out on us. There was no way for me to turn back now but it was so hard to continue. I can't undo this when it's done.
"Jacy, we know that you're not the girly girl type and all that, but you're still a woman. It can't be that much different than other pregnancies." Bechard was being calm about all of this while Laurell was still calming her anger down.
I took a deep breath to steady myself. While I was preparing to tell these people what I really was Kyle reached over and grabbed my hand. That alone gave me a little more strength.
"OK, here it goes." I took one more deep breath then continued. "The pregnancy for me is different because people like me and Kyle, well, we're not like you guys. We're not human. We're something a little more. Supernaturals to be exact."
"Supernaturals? Sweetie, what are you getting at?" Laurell was trying her best to remain calm. "Supernatural creatures don't exist."
"Yes, they do. EZ has known about me for a long time. I never told you because I didn't want to wrap you up in my world. Though I need to tell you now. You need to know. If you don't want anything to do with me anymore then I will understand."
"Wait!" Bechard cut in. "Let's just slow down here a little, alright." He was looking at everyone in the room with him one at a time. He was trying to tell who was lying or who was wrong. He couldn't figure it out apparently.
After rubbing his brows Bechard looked up and spoke to me again. He was calm but I could tell that he was confused.
"Now, Jacy, what kind of supernatural being are you talking about? What do you mean when you say you're not human? You look pretty human to me."
"I am a human most of the time but I have another form. Kyle does as well. I am a shifter, a werewolf. This doesn't mean that I turn into a half woman and half wolf like Hollywood says. What it means is that I turn into a larger version of a wolf just like you would find in the wild."
"OK." Laurell was breathing slowly as she processed all of this. "And what is Kyle? Is he a werewolf as well?"
"No Ma'am. I am a feline shifter. I do not become a wolf, instead I become a black panther."
"Interesting." Bechard was rubbing his chin as he thought about this. "And can you prove this to us? Can you prove that you are not pulling our legs or trying to get one over on us?"
"We can, but are you sure you're ready for that?" I asked him, wanting to make sure that I didn't scare them too badly.
Prior to our visit we had discussed what we would do if they wanted proof. We knew that they would since it was completely understandable. If they wanted to see something to prove that we were telling the truth we would enter various stages of partial shifts. Then, Bechard and Laurell can feel for themselves that the changes were real.
That just seemed like the best option that we had. I needed them to understand that this was real and that they didn't have to be afraid of us.
"Alright." It sounded like Bechard was contemplating for a second. "I think we can handle it. I want to understand and to see with my own eyes what it is you mean."
"OK, that's fine. We can show you. But I want you to know that we will not be performing full shifts. Those render us nude when we shift back and I don't want to take that sort of time right now."
"That is fine. Please, do what you need to and show us what this is all about." Laurell seemed to have no problems with talking anymore. She was completely calm now.
I looked at Kyle and he nodded at me. We were prepared to do this the moment we got here. There was nothing that could stop us now. I may need to steel my nerves a little, or I might need to take a few deep breaths to slow my heart down a little. It didn't matter, I would do whatever it was that I needed to do.
Once my heart felt a little more normal I reached into the dark for my wolf. I brought forward the front paws, the tail, and the pointed ears. These were the all things that would prove that I was telling the truth but it would also leave me looking more human than anything else.
When I turned to look at Kyle I saw that he had done the exact same thing as I had. I imagined that I looked much the same but he reminded me of an anime version of beast man. More man than anything with just a few animal characteristics. He was actually super cute right now.
I steadied myself and turned to look at the two people who had become like parents to me over the last several years. They had their eyes opened wide and it looked like they were stunned into silence.
Oh no, I've done it. I've either given them heart attacks or sent them into catatonic states where they would never be able to move again. EZ was going to hate me. His sisters were going to kill me. Not to mention I just doomed my niece and nephew to grow up without knowing their grandparents.
Oh Goddess, I'm such a horrible person. Why did I do this? Why didn't I stop myself?
"This is amazing." Laurell finally spoke and leaned toward me. I felt her take my right hand and feel the fur and the claws. "This is all real? It has to be, I watched it happen right in front of me. And look, it's real fur. And these claws look like they could kill someone."
"And look at Kyle. He really is part panther. Look at that all black tail. And those whiskers."
Oddly enough, it seemed like EZ's parents were a little more accepting than I had thought they were. I don't know why I ever doubted them.
"So, Bastian." Laurell smiled at him. "What are you? A wolf or a feline?" She had guessed that there was something different about Bastian as well, probably because we were talking about all of this in front of him.
"Neither." He answered a little nervously.
"Oh, so you're not a shifter like them?" Bechard raised a brow and asked him.
"Oh I am. I am just not a cat or a dog." He laughed.
"Then what are you?" Laurell was almost bouncing in her seat when she asked him that question.
"I'm an owl."
Both of EZ's parents started to laugh.
"That is perfect. A dog, a cat, and a bird. There has to be something we can do with this. We need to make a joke about it. It's in there somewhere." Bechard had tears in his eyes as he laughed.
"I know, that is funny, a chain of enemies working together and being friends. It's so precious."
Well, it looked like the rest of lunch was going to go well. That is until Laurell brought up another subject.
"Well, I guess you're all going to move in with your partners now. EZ does that mean you're leaving the guest house?"
"When we find the right place, yes. And I will probably stay with Bastian a lot." EZ didn't feel shy answering these questions at all.
"Why not just have him stay with you, unless he doesn't want to, that is?" Bechard was always accepting of his son.
"No, I would love to. I just didn't want to overstep my bounds."
"Bastian, you're planning to be with our son for a long time right? Don't worry about it. You're family now. Same with you Kyle. Will you be moving in with Jacy?"
"Actually, Jacy and I are neighbors. Quite literally. Our condos are side by side. But with a baby on the way and potentially more children in the future we have decided to move. I actually found the perfect place last night. I will have to show it to you sometime."
"That is wonderful. Please let me help you decorate if you need any assistance." Laurell was way more nice about this than I thought she would have been.. Where were my fireworks I was hoping for when he told them I was moving? Ugh, this was no fun.
