The hair-raising day tired me. After dinner, I went upstairs alone to my room.
“Irina?” Ravi knocked on my door and stood at the door.
“Yes.”
“Tl take you somewhere tomorrow.”
“Okay. Good night.”
Our car was parked in front of an old villa. The house looked like an old castle from an old movie. Every brick looked worn-out, but the entire villa looked elegant.
Ravi and I got out of the car and the attendant at the door opened the door to the villa for us. I followed Ravi, and all I saw was splendor. A huge crystal chandelier hung from the third floor to the first floor. The interior was filled with a noble vibe. Ravi and I sat on the couch while the maid in the room
served us black tea.
“Where is this?” I asked Ravi quietly.
Before Ravi could answer me, a middle-aged man in his forties to fifties walked down the huge spiral staircase. He was tall and muscular, and he was wearing a checkered suit and a bow tie. His hair was slicked back. His eyes had a menacing look in them.
He walked down the last step and said with a smile, “Welcome home.”
“This is Irina. This is my father, Arthur.” Ravi stood up and introduced us to each other.
Arthur stared at me with his menacing eyes, making me feel uncomfortable. Ravi blocked Arthur’s gaze.
Ravi and Arthur walked out to the yard while talking about something. They switched between English and another language. I guessed it was Italian, because Ravi had told me his family was Italian. I sat alone in the living room and admired the oil paintings on the wall.
suddenly, a black thing flashed in front of my eyes. I focused and saw that it was a black cat. It looked back at me and walked forward again, as if it wanted to take me somewhere. I wanted to hug and touch it, so I kept following it. It took a few steps before turning back to look at me, as if it was afraid I
would lose my way.
The villa was huge. I followed the black cat down the stairs and stepped into a quiet hallway. This hallway was very long. The lights on both sides of the hallway were dim and they flickered. I didn’t know where the black cat was hiding. I walked along the hallway and looked everywhere for signs of the
black cat. It was extremely quiet here. I saw a door ajar on the right side of the front door. I thought that the black cat must be in this room.
As I pushed open the door, I whispered, “Are you here?”
The door was pushed open. It was an empty room without even any furniture. I closed the door gently, but I heard a voice. “I’m here.”
All the hair on my body stood up, because I could hear the voice clearly. This voice was coming from the room at the end of the corridor. I wasn’t sure if the owner of the voice was male or female. This voice was extremely hoarse and low. I could barely determine if it was a human’s voice.
I turned to leave, but I was curious to see what was at the end of the hallway. I tiptoed over and took a deep breath before placing my hand on the handle of the door.
“What are you doing?!” A voice came from behind me and make me withdraw my hand in shock. I turned and saw Arthur standing not far away from me. His eyes looked especially fierce under the dim light.
He walked toward me, grabbed my wrist, and pulled me back.
“No one is allowed to come to the basement without my permission.”
“Tm sorry. I didn’t know. I just came to find the cat.”
“won’t listen to any excuses! It seems that Ravi just slept with you and hasn’t punished you yet. You have to know that being his whore requires rules.”
“Tm not a whore,” I said through gritted teeth.
“Don’t interrupt me when I’m talking!” Arthur suddenly pushed me against the staircase. My leg hit the stairs and I knelt down in a sorry state.
At that moment, Ravi rushed downstairs. He saw my wretched state and immediately helped me up.
“Don’t touch her!!” Ravi shouted at Arthur. This was the first time I had heard Ravi speak in an angry tone.
“She’s just a whore.” Arthur glared at me and then at Ravi.
“This is the first and last time I’m warning you. Irina is my woman. If she loses a hair, I’ll aim the gun at your heart and pull the trigger.” I could tell that Ravi was trying very hard to control his emotions, but clearly, he didn’t succeed this time.
Ravi took my hand and led me upstairs. He walked through the living room on the first floor and then left the villa…
