Feng Xuan could no longer hear the beat of her heart. After the screen went black, everything had been too loud. Senator Chang Yan was barking orders like a mad dog, spit flying out of his mouth as he raised his voice louder and louder as if the men around him were deaf.
Among all the fear in her chest there was joy. It was Qing Chen. It could only be him. Who else would come to her rescue apart from her husband and father? Or was it the police? Over the crowd of her feelings, she found that she was laughing. "Oh no, you're dead," she said to the pacing senator.
Sweat had made his shirt stuck to his back and his face was glittering with it. Gun still in his hand, he pressed the heels to his eyes whispering to himself.
Feng Xuan heard more gunshots and winced. Surely, it was not her husband who was firing them, right?
"Secure the exit!" the senator shouted. "Get me the car." To the other half of men, "Make sure they are not going to get in here. You'll die first before they get me. Understand?!"
His men only had grim looks on their faces—like they were now realizing who were they working for this nutcase. But they followed him anyway and scattered out of the room, their guns poised in front of them.
Feng Xuan swallowed—wishing none of them would hit Qing Chen or anyone else for that matter.
"Cut her loose," ordered the senator and she felt the blood rushed to her feet and hands. "Bound her wrists."
"They're going to get you!" she said, trying to burn the senator with her eyes. "When they do, they're going to make sure you're not going to make it out of here alive!"
The senator laughed and gave her a smile that made her feel like a little girl. "And add a new crime in their list? I don't think so."
They he pointed the gun to her head and she felt her breath hitched. She was not scared to die, but she might as well be because her hands were suddenly shaking and she had this odd urge to pee. She closed her eyes and found herself praying, her heart was racing like it was going to kill her before the bullet.
But the gunshots grew louder. It meant that whoever was coming was getting nearer. They were not yet dead. She still had a chance to live. With a few deep breaths she controlled her breathing.
"Feeling scared?" she asked with a shaky voice that could be masked as a laugh. The senator did not pay attention to her as he kept his eyes on the door. The only one left with him was the biggest man who had tended to her leg wound. "I assume it's not much of a surprise that your stupid plan failed."
"Shut up!" The senator jammed the hilt of the gun to her temple and she resisted the urge to groan in pain. She waited for the pain to ebb away after a few seconds but it did not. Instead, dark spots flashed in her vision, making her dizzy as she tried to keep her eyelids open. Something was clawing at her stomach, wanting out but Feng Xuan held her breath to keep it all down. Her visions blurred and she could feel herself drifting in and out of reality.
Then the gunshots were loud enough that it sent her ears ringing—missing out on what the senator was screaming. Then she felt someone holding on the ropes on her wrists and was dragging her away to the corner door she had seen earlier. The senator pulled it open and roughly pushed her inside.

"All clear," announced Wuming as he checked the last empty room. In their wake, the bodies of men in suits were bullet-fed. There must've been about twenty of them. "She must be in that room."
Qing Chen nodded and they both placed themselves at the either side of the door before he kicked it open, guns ready to blaze but they found no one. "Run to the exit. I'll move forward."
Wuming nodded before leaping from the window and out of view. Qing Chen proceeded to the door connected to the room. When he pushed it open, he shot at the man he saw standing at the center of it. But his bullets had ran out.
OF ALL THE TIME, he almost cursed under his breath but the man had pulled out a gun and started shooting at him. He quickly ducked at the nearest table. He threw away the gun and pulled the other one on his holster, shooting where the sound was coming from.
He covered his head as he heard the other gun clicking. He went out to shoot but the man was nowhere in sight. Suddenly, a huge pair of arms grabbed him by his collar and lifted him in the air.
Sweet geezus, this man was tall! Almost seven feet. His face looked distorted with too many large features. Qing Chen balled his fist and made a move to punch the man in the eye but it was caught—as he expected because it was the other fist that was going to land the blow.
He managed to struck the man's ear and he dropped to the ground. The man tumbled but easily straightened himself, now with a murderous look in his eyes.
Qing Chen stretched his shoulders and shrugged his coat off. He raised his fists. "Come on."
Such huge creatures relied on their frame and less on their brains. They were slow and focused on grabbing and crushing—like mindless giants. It was going to be easy. He just had to dodge the right shot.
The man lunged at Qing Chen, quickly swinging two huge punches with long arms. He ducked and leaped away, landing two blows at the man's side and managed to kick him in the back of the knee. The man dropped and Qing Chen did not wait for him to get back up. He hooked his arms around the neck and squeezed.
Groaning, the man's hands reached at his arms, pulling to get a breath, and Qing Chen could feel him starting to fight to stand up. Qing Chen struggled to keep him in place, he could feel his arms loosening against the man's long fingers digging on his skin. He took the risk and loosened it only so he could knee his back land another blow at the base of the throat. He arms wrapped again and with one final hard jerk, he cracked the neck.
When the man was no longer moving, Qing Chen dropped the lifeless body. He shivered a little. He hated killing men with his own hands. He could feel the life leave their bodies—the air letting out a last puff and nothing else would follow.
He looked around the room and saw that there was another door at the corner. If Feng Xuan was not there… he was going to lose his mind.
