Liu Meilien was wearing a silk top and shorts. The moment she stepped out of the house, the wind bit at her exposed skin. She immediately signaled to the guard on duty that she was stepping out.
"Where are you going, Miss?"
"I have a friend right outside. I just have to talk to him."
"Miss, you're not allowed to—"
"It's one of the Qings," she snapped and the guard pressed the button that made the gate roll a little to the side. She slipped out the rails and crossed the empty street and into the dark blue sports car. The door opened even before she reached it and it automatically closed—slowly like it was a show.
"It's so cold!" she said and rubbed on her thighs to bring heat to them. She saw Qing Lok's long fingers pressed something on the dashboard and she felt heat blew on her face, legs, and her seat became warmer.
"Is that better?"
"Thank you," she said quietly and her hand moved to fix her hair. Then she raised her head and met Qing Lok's eyes for the first time, then her heart broke a little. "Why are you here?"
Qing Lok pursed his lips and drummed his fingers on the wheel. "I told you that I need to talk to you about something?"
"Okay. What is it?"
"Are you in a rush?"
Liu Meilien felt guilty for keeping with that attitude. "Uh… not really. But you know, my dramas can't wait," she laughed to lighten the mood.
"I promise this wouldn't take that long." But then he shifted gears and they slowly started moving.
"Where are we going?"
"I haven't had dinner yet. Let's get something to eat."
It was just like the first time that they went out. Qing Lok had not eaten that night either. "Okay."
"Are you hungry?"
Liu Meilien had been starving. She was not even supposed to eat ch.i.p.s but she ate it anyway to keep her mouth busy while watching. Her diet was prohibiting her from eating anything so late in the night. She answered "yes" anyway.
A sudden thought occurred to her. "Is this our 'midnight snack' date?"
"Hmmm, you can say that."
Liu Meilien felt her stomach dove. There was something about the tone of Qing Lok that she didn't like. Based from the things that she saw in TV, in this kind of situation, there was always something wrong. He was just buttering her up to soften the blow that was going to come.
Now she did not feel as hungry.
Surprisingly, Qing Lok turned a sharp right and she found that they were in a drive-thru on the biggest fast food chain in the world. Unable to keep the strange feeling inside, she ordered the thing that she should not eat the most. A burger. A juicy delicious burger with a side of fries and a huge soft drink float.
If she was going to be disappointed tonight, at least she had been well-fed. She would gladly burn all of these in the treadmill tomorrow.
"Why can't we just dine inside?" she asked when he handed her the warm paper bags. She let it rest on her thighs for the additional heat.
"I don't want to deal with people right now. I just want to be alone with you."
Even if she didn't want to, what he said sent a few butterflies flying in her ugly stomach. She was so confused. What was going on? What was he going to tell her that he could not risk any other people hearing it?
Ha! He was probably going to break up with her and he was trying to save her from having a stranger doc.u.ment one of the most horrible things that would happen in her life. What was more horrible was that she thought he was going to break up with her when they haven't been together in the first place!
They had been going on dates with each other—they were surely dates. Neither of them tried to clarified that they were not in a date. But in none of those dates did they ever talk about on where they stood relationship-wise.
Whenever Liu Meilien thought about it, she would suddenly get caught up in the moment and decide to not let it bother their current happy time. She knew she was having fun. Qing Lok was having fun. So what was the point of keeping a label?
Qing Lok drove around until they get into a place wherein there were trees on either side of them—the kind of place that you would only see on horror movies. "Qing Lok," she said quietly, getting scared, but as soon as she held onto his sleeve, they finally reached a clearing and she took a breath of relief.
"What?" he asked.
She let go of him. "Oh no, nothing. I'm fine. I just got scared for a second there."
A small smile showed on his lips. "You don't have anything to be afraid of while I'm here." Then his expression changed like he regretted those words that left his mouth. The car stopped. "Actually—"
"I'm going out first," she said and opened the door. She was not yet ready to hear what he had to say. What if he was going to tell her that it was over? What would she do? Would she cry when she gets home?
She rounded to the bumper, turning her back on the eerie silhouette of the trees. She began pulling out the food from the paper bag and she heard Qing Lok's door closed.
"Would you rather that we stay here outside? It's cold."
"I'm fine," she smiled at him. "I've been wearing less clothes in a lesser compatible weather."
He must've sensed that she didn't want to talk yet because he gave her a look before pulling his food and started eating.
But she felt like it was torture. "What do you want to talk about?"
