The Zookeeper laughed. "Well, I was just telling your wife. If hadn't interrupted us, I would've already finished."
Feng Xuan closed her eyes and she felt them burn under her lids. She knew that Qing Chen was waiting for her to say something but she could not.
"Okay, then," Qing Chen said and passed each of them a drink. She did not even open her eyes when he got to her and she just drank it straight, feeling her nerves loosen a little. "Tell us the story. We got all night to listen to you. Your men are already dead."
The Zookeeper chuckled. "Yeah, The Fox was just really stupid. He was only good for his killing skills and nothing more. Got no brains I should say."
"Why did you handed power over to him?"
The Zookeeper sighed, looking pale. "Believe it or not, he was the one who had the most brains in this one and—"
"Hate to interrupt you and all," Wuming said with a yawn. "But I really want to sleep and can we just skip to the part that you're troubling my sister-in-law, so we can go home and then you get to die."
"Yes, I was just getting there," The Zookeeper said. "You see…" then he started laughing, and laughing.
When it went on for half a minute, Qing Chen finally asked. "What's so funny?"
"It's funny because when your wife lost her memories, she created a new memory of what happened that night, but that her so-called original memory, is not accurate either."
Qing Chen shifted his weight. "What do you mean?"
"She was the one that killed her mother."
"And why would she do that?" Wuming butted in. "Who would kill their mother?"
"Give me a reason, Wuming," said The Zookeeper. "In what cases would you kill your mother?"
"None," he answered immediately.
"Wrong," The Zookeeper chuckled. "Do you want to give it a try?" he asked Qing Chen.
Instead of answering back, he pulled a gun from his waist and pointed it to the head of The Zookeeper. "Stop talking to us like we're friends. Just tell us what we need to know."
"Do you even know what you need to know?" dared The Zookeeper. "You are all just kids running around, not knowing what the hell your parents have done to this world!"
"And you know what they did?"
"Oh, everybody did. We just don't talk about it anymore."
Qing Chen inclined his head to the side at Wuming and his brother moved. He squeezed the trigger and the next second, The Zookeeper lost an ear.
The room was filled with screams and curses in every possible language before The Zookeeper calmed down and glared at Qing Chen. "Am I speaking too loud?!"
Qing Chen nodded his head. "Now, tell us what you know."
The Zookeeper laughed, throwing his head against the bed. "You blow off my ear and you still think that I am going to tell you something?!"
"He wasn't going to tell you in the first place," Wuming answered with an arm above his eyes. "Let's just kill him, Chen. Let's go home."
Qing Chen's patience was getting thin. He pointed the gun to The Zookeeper's in-between-legs. "You're going to tell me everything or this goes next. Spit it out."
The Zookeeper's legs started to jitter and he shook his head.
"You're going to bleed out really bad if I shoot here. Now, say what you know!"
The Zookeeper's face transformed into something more teasing. "Ask your wife first if she killed her mother."
"She did not kill her mother!"
"She did… or did she not? What if I tell you that Feng Xuan learned a deep secret of her mother's?" The Zookeeper's eyebrows raised. "A deep secret that made her kill her own mom?"
Qing Chen's eyes flicked to the back of Feng Xuan's head. "That's not possible. Her mind couldn't have created two different memories."
"Can't it? The brain is such a mystery, don't you think? We never know…"
Qing Chen pressed the other end of the gun to The Zookeeper's stomach. "What's that secret?"
The Zookeeper grinned. "That's something that your wife can find out. Or better yet," he chuckled, "she can ask her mother."
Feng Xuan answered. "My mother is dead."
"Sure… or is she?"
Her eyes opened and in a breath, although in pain and lightly limping, she was in front of The Zookeeper, pressing on the knife that was keeping his hand on the floor. The Zookeeper's face twisted and paled more. "My. Mother. Is. Dead."
The Zookeeper shook his head. "You never know."
"Don't let him get to your head," said Wuming. "Chen, blow his head off pl—"
Then there were footsteps by the door and Qing Lok who was out of breath was there, a gun slung on his arm. "What did I miss?"
"Not much, brother."
Then he collapsed to the floor. "I am so tired! And why is he still alive? Let's go home."
"Apparently this couple likes theatre. Where's everybody?"
"Clearing up," answered Qing Lok. "We're going to bomb this place down when we leave."
"Do you want to go down with the house?" Feng Xuan asked The Zookeeper and pressed against the knife that was still on his leg.
"I would rather die in this house than from your tortures!"
Feng Xuan's hand fisted on the hilt of the knife. She pulled it off and stuck it back in, harder. More blood seeped to the carpet. "What made you say that my mother is not dead?!"
"I just saw your mom. Beautiful as ever," he groaned. "She keeps tabs on you. Loves you so much."
"You have no right to tell me about my mother."
"Oh, I think she would thank me for this. I'm sure she had wanted to reach out to you but couldn't."
"What do you know?!"
"As I've said, you can ask her yourself." He smiled. "But you really did kill her."
