Chapter 426 - This Is The Only Way

Feng Xuan knew that she was going to regret whatever it was that she was about to do when the door opened. It was only a crack but it was enough for her to see the eyes of the person behind.

The man was smaller than she thought and his face was lined with age. His eyes light and surprised as he looked over Ma Min and her. She could not even make her face show an expression.

"Who are you?" he asked.

"Hello," said Ma Min in a cheery voice. "We are renting from the floor above. We just learned that we have a leaking pipe from under our sink and wanted to make sure that your ceiling is doing fine so we can call someone who can fix it."

The man looked over his shoulder. "I don't think there's anything wrong with my ceiling."

"Can we take a look?" Ma Min's voice was sweet as honey. Feng Xuan didn't think that she would be capable of that. "My friend knows a thing or two about ceilings."

To that Feng Xuan sent a small smile to the old man, but it looked like she scared him than comforted him.

"Uh," said the man, "I'll have it checked tomorrow." His eyes darted around. "I'm kind of a middle of something."

"Oh," Ma Min cooed. "But we are really worried. Your ceiling might collapse tonight. Our whole room was flooded when we got home."

Feng Xuan might not know about construction but this building had been made with stone so leak or not, the ceiling won't collapse. Ma Min should really work on her alibis.

"I really have to decline your offer until tomorrow," insisted the old man. Now he was looking terrified and suspiciously. To that, Ma Min's face got quiet. Her eyes were striking, like sending a warning together with the menacing smile on her lips. Feng Xuan got goosebumps on her arms. "You're going to let us in."

The man behind the door visibly shook. His voice was trembling when he said, "G-good eve-n-ning, ladies."

He moved to close the door and that was when Ma Min pushed past. She was like a bull and Feng Xuan heard when the door chain lock snapped from the force. The man immediately backed away. Feng Xuan felt sorry when she saw how terribly he was shaking. She actually worried that he was going to have some attack before Ma Min could do whatever she was meant to do here.

"I-I'll give you everything," he said. "There isn't much b-but…" he reached for his bag which was on the couch which was ladden with clothes. From the looks of it, they were all crumpled up and dirty.

Food wrappers, plastics, clothes, and items were all scattered on the floor. He was not a tidy man, she commented in her head, trying to pull it away from what they were about to do. She shut the door behind her and locked it.

The entire room was dark. The only light was coming from the out-of-date television. Ma Min had the nerve to turn on the lights when Feng Xuan wished that they should just keep everything in the way that she would not be able to see anything.

The less that she knew about this man, the better.

"We don't need money," said Ma Min.

The man stopped ruffling inside his bag. On his hand were some scrunched up bills and a few coins. Feng Xuan could not handle it anymore so she swallowed and said in a tight voice, "What are you waiting for?"

Ma Min turned to her. "What do you mean what am I waiting for? I AM waiting for you. Do it."

"But--"

"Don't worry, I'll give you the bounty."

Feng Xuan snarled, "I'm not worried about the money!"

"Okay then, I'll keep it. Get started."

"Why me?!"

The man's eyes were passing through between her and Ma Min. Feng Xuan wanted to apologize by the look on his face. Ma Min turned to her. "Isn't this what you want to know? If you can kill a man without a reason?"

Right, right, her mind reasoned with her. She tried imagining her mind going into peace. She tried to reason with it. It's going to be okay, she said to it. We're here to find out.

Upon hearing Ma Min's words, the man bolted to the back of his home, slipping and tripping on the strewn objects on the floor. He rushed on what seemed to be his bedroom, but before he could close the door, Ma Min's booted foot was already wedged on the doorway.

Feng Xuan could feel her stomach tumbling as Ma Min dragged the man by the neck of his shirt out on the living room again. He was murmuring his pleas, saying that he would do everything in exchange for his life.

She could no longer deny it. Her heart was breaking.

Ma Min brought the man directly in front of Feng Xuan and made him kneel. She then pulled a gun from her holster and placed it on Feng Xuan's hands. A silencer was attached to it. No sounds… "Trust me," she whispered. "It's easier this way."

If Ma Min was not holding her hand, it would've been shaking uncontrollably. Ma Min pointed the end on the man's forehead. Who was already crying. His hands were together like he was praying. Saying "please" a hundred times per second.

Feng Xuan let her eyes roam the room. There had to be something… something here that would tell her that this man was evil and deserved to die. But all her eyes caught were the small table near the television where multiple picture frames stood. This man had a wife. This man had a daughter. It looked like she had just graduated high school.

"Do it," Ma Min said. "Let's get this over and done with."

"I-I," Feng Xuan began.

"Please let me live!" said the man and touched the tips of her boots. "I'll do everything. Please, please, PLEASE!"

Feng Xuan's face wrinkled as her throat closed up. Tears brimmed her eyes. She herself was quivering.

"The first time is always the hardest." Ma Min was just patiently waiting with her arms crossed, while she looked at the man pleading for his life by their feet. "This is why you have to be quick." She toed the man's hand away from Feng Xuan's foot. "You can't let them convince you that they have to live."

It was embarrassing by how weak she sounded when she asked the question. "How can you say that he deserves to die?"

"I'll tell you after you do it," said Ma Min. "This is the only way."

Feng Xuan bit her lips. This man deserves to die, she told herself. There's a reason. He needs to die. "Okay," she said, her voice breaking.

"Please, please, PLEASE. Give me another chance." The man's voice was hoarse and his breathing heavy and hard.

But Feng Xuan raised the gun.
