53 The Competition Begins
Because of Jing Yan and Li Ming’s appearance at the same time, the whole field was in an uproar.
Jing Yan’s popularity was not only high in the Computer Science Department, but also among the top in the entire campus. Although he was always cold, the more he acted like this, the more infatuated girls would take the initiative to approach him.
As for Li Ming, he had always been in the Fragrance and Perfumes Department, which had a small number of people. Originally, he was only popular in his major, but after his appearance at the sports meet, many girls had become his fans, just to see his bright smile.
The two of them were like Ice and Fire colliding together. How could people not feel their blood boiling?
The audience in the stands had already gone crazy. Watching the game from afar was only scratching the itch through their shoes. The students ignored the teachers’ orders to stay put and rushed to the side of the track to cheer for them.
Jing Yan glanced around and finally found a familiar figure at the back of the crowd.
He smiled and looked at Li Ming. When he saw that he was also looking in that direction, his face suddenly sank.
The starting gun was fired, and the first runner of the relay race quickly rushed out of the starting line. The 800-meter relay race was divided into four groups, each group running 200 meters. No one was allowed to save their strength in a short distance, and everyone wanted to keep a distance from their opponents.
The first leg was of utmost importance. If one could lead far ahead in the first leg, then even if the following athlete was not as good, he would not be too far behind.
In addition to this, the most important group was the last group. Regardless of whether the students in front were in the lead or behind, the last group had to use all their strength to reach the finish line. They were responsible for the joint efforts of all the students before.
Coincidentally, Jing Yan and Li Ming were both the sprinters in charge of the last leg in this race.
The moment the relay baton was passed over, Jing Yan dashed out like a fast horse.
The Computer Science girls screamed wildly outside the field, watching the last 200 meters intently.
Their group could have been in the lead, but the boy in third place was slightly slower and was overtaken by the other runners.
Victory or defeat would be decided by Jing Yan alone.
However, Li Ming was one step ahead of Jing Yan. The moment they began sprinting, Li Ming turned his head and sneered at Jing Yan. It was obvious that he was also holding back his anger.
Jing Yan calmly adjusted his breathing, quickened his pace, and caught up with Li Ming in an instant.
His race track was right next to Li Ming’s. Jing Yan clenched the relay baton tightly in his hand and looked straight at the finish line not far away. He moved his lips expressionlessly. “You’re going to lose.”
At first, Li Ming was not willing to play along, but his words ignited his fighting spirit. He gritted his teeth and rushed to the finish line. Even though his feet gradually became soft and floating, he was not willing to admit defeat.
The finish line was within reach, but Jing Yan was able to keep a step ahead of Li Ming, like playing with a cat. No matter how hard Li Ming tried, he could not catch up to Jing Yan.
The moment he crossed the finish line, Jing Yan turned his body to check if He Miao’s eyes had been on him the whole time.
However, before he could find He Miao, there was a sudden cry of surprise around him. He turned back to look. Li Ming, who was beside him, had twisted his foot the moment he crossed the finish line. His body fell forward suddenly.
Jing Yan furrowed his brows and wanted to take a step back, but his body moved forward before his brain and caught Li Ming who almost fell to the ground.
At the end of the race, the PE teacher and the students who were watching came over to check Li Ming’s injury.
Jing Yan let go of his hand in disgust and stepped aside. Naturally, his female classmates who admired him came over and praised him for his bravery.
Jing Yan walked around the crowd to look for the person he had been waiting for. He turned around and saw her in the crowd.
He Miao’s mood had been stirred up by the soul-stirring competition, and she felt happy from the bottom of her heart for Jing Yan’s victory. However, when he saw Li Ming almost fall, her happiness turned into worry.
Xu Meng pulled on He Miao’s arm and pushed people aside, squeezing into the crowd. She held Li Ming, who could not stand properly, and asked with concern, “How are you? Can you stand? Why don’t I ask the boys in our class to carry you back?”
“It’s fine. I can walk.” Li Ming smiled, then lowered her eyes to look at He Miao apologetically. “I’m sorry, I lost the match just now.”
