217 Staying Up For The New Year
The dazzling fireworks bloomed in the dark night sky, reflecting the two figures hugging each other on the ground.
He Miao had never seen fireworks at such a close distance. As she hugged the man who had surprised her, her eyes and heart were filled with joy.
The two of them played until late at night before they returned to the house hand in hand.
In the dining room, the aroma of dumplings filled the air. He Miao offered to help carry the bowls and cutleries, but Jing Yan pulled her to the sofa and personally poured her a glass of hot milk.
The warm cup was wrapped in the cold palm of his hand, and He Miao realized that her hands had long been red from the cold.
“Just let them do what they need to do. You sit here and warm yourself up. I’ll go upstairs and call Grandpa down for dinner.” Jing Yan covered He Miao’s legs with a blanket, then turned to go upstairs.
He Miao grabbed his hand in time. “I’ll go up with you,” He Miao said. “Let’s go change first, in case Grandpa catches a cold from touching the cold air on our bodies.”
Jing Yan nodded and rubbed her nose affectionately. “You’re so meticulous.”
The two of them went back to their rooms and changed into casual clothes. Then, they walked to the door of Old Master Jing’s bedroom and knocked on it.
Grandpa Jing was sitting on the bed and looking at the photos. When he heard the sound, he wiped the tears off his face, turned on the light and opened the door with a smile. “It must be you two.”
Old Master Jing did not seem surprised to see them. He walked out of the bedroom with a kind smile and closed the door. “Have the dumplings been cooked? I’ll go downstairs with you.”
“Grandpa, did you see the fireworks just now?” He Miao asked with a smile, holding Old Master Jing’s arm affectionately.
Old Master Jing nodded in amusement. “I saw it. It’s been a long time since we’ve set off fireworks. You can have fun to your heart’s content this time. If there’s anything else you want, you can tell Jing Yan.”
“I know, Grandpa.” He Miao held the old man’s hand and walked down the stairs side by side.
Behind them, Jing Yan deliberately fell a step behind them. When the two went downstairs, he turned around and tiptoed back to his grandfather’s room. When he pushed open the door, he immediately saw the family portrait on the table.
In the picture, grandma was sitting in the middle holding grandpa’s arm, the man standing behind her was holding her shoulder, and a young baby was sleeping in the woman’s arms.
In the corridor, a servant was calling, “Young Master Jing.”
Hearing that, Jing Yan put down the photo, hid the depression in his heart, and pushed open the door with a blank expression.
The servant saw him coming out of Old Master Jing’s room and was stunned for a moment before she reacted. “Young Master Jing, the Old Master wants you to go downstairs and eat dumplings with him.”
“I know.” Jing Yan furrowed his brows and gave the servant a warning look. “Which room did you see me come out from?”
The servant had been living in the Jing family house for many years and was used to things. Hearing Jing Yan’s question, she immediately answered, “You, you came out of your room.”
“Well, that’s good.” Jing Yan gave her a meaningful look and walked down the stairs without looking back.
In the dining room, Old Master Jing was chatting happily with He Miao. He did not know what He Miao was talking about, but Old Master Jing’s eyes were so joyous as he laughed heartily.
“What are you talking about?” Jing Yan pulled out a chair and naturally sat beside He Miao. He picked up his cutleries, picked up the largest and roundest dumpling, and put it into He Miao’s bowl.
“Miaomiao is telling me about the fun things in school!” Old Master Jing liked to hear her talk about these things. Perhaps it was because he was old and always wanted to hear more and know more, as if this was the only way to prove that he was still young and not old.
“Miaomiao has done a lot of research on fragrance-making,” Jing Yan joked with a smile. “She must have gotten good grades in the final exam, right?”
He Miao was slightly taken aback. When she met Old Master Jing’s inquisitive gaze, she smiled in embarrassment. “I forgot to check my results. If Grandpa wants to know, I’ll take a look now.”
Old Master Jing was well aware of the girl’s perfume-making skills, so he was not worried that she would fail. Instead, he looked at her expectantly, like an old mischievous child.
He Miao smiled shyly. After she entered her student ID into the school’s exam system, her final grades were quickly displayed.
Jing Yan also came over curiously. When he saw the results on her phone screen, he said to Old Master Jing proudly, “Miaomiao got full marks this time!”
“Really? Little girl, let Grandpa take a look.” Grandpa Jing took the phone from her happily. He looked at the full marks on the screen and smiled happily. “Our Miaomiao is so good. Your school will definitely give you a scholarship when the results are out!” he said.
“There should be,” He Miao smiled and turned to Jing Yan. “You should have one too, right? I remember that your grades in Computer Science have always been pretty good.”
