221 Eavesdropping
“Please don’t say that. You’ll definitely live to a hundred years old. You see, Young Master Jing and Miss He are in love with each other now. You’ll have to live well to see your great-grandson after their wedding.” Butler Li comforted him with a bitter smile.
“You actually know how to coax me.” Old Master Jing’s white hair was dyed golden in the morning light, and the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes were squeezed together when he smiled. “I’m afraid I’ll be over 90 years old by then. It’s going to be difficult.”
“What’s so difficult about it? Can’t you just urge them? I can see that these two children are very filial,” Butler Li advised kindly. “As long as you urge them to give birth to the children as soon as possible, you can look forward to that day sooner, right?”
“Don’t talk nonsense. How can you rush me? You’re just a frivolous old man.” Old Master Jing criticized seriously, “It’s up to the two of them whether they want to have children or not. What’s there to urge? I just want to see the two of them being happy. I don’t care about great-grandchildren.”
“You’re quite open-minded.” Butler Li poured him a cup of hot tea and commented.
Old Master Jing chuckled and said, “How can I not want to? It’s human nature to grow old, get sick, and die. Even if I’m reluctant, that day will come. Sometimes, when I think about it, it’s not a bad thing to be able to accompany my wife earlier.”
Butler Li continued to chat with Old Master Jing with a smile.
Outside the door, He Miao covered her mouth with tears in her eyes and looked helplessly at the man beside her who was also pale.
Jing Yan pulled her to the side and gently wiped her tears away. He coaxed her in a low voice, “Don’t be sad. Grandpa is just saying. Even if he really leaves us one day, he’ll be very happy. He loves grandma a lot, so he won’t be lonely there.”
“Jing Yan, I’m worried about you.” He Miao wrapped her arms around Jing Yan’s neck and stared at him with teary eyes. “I know he’s your only family, so I’m worried you’ll be sad.”
“Grandfather is right. It’s human nature to grow old, get sick, and die. If grandfather can see this, how can I not?” Jing Yan hugged the petite girl in his arms. Seeing her trying to comfort him, he could not help but laugh, “And who said that grandfather is my only family? Don’t I still have you?”
“Jing Yan…” He Miao was about to say something when she suddenly heard a light cough behind her.
She quickly let go of Jing Yan shyly, lowered her head, and said embarrassedly, “Grandpa, when did you stand there? Why didn’t I hear any footsteps?”
Old Master Jing laughed in his heart, but on the surface, he had to consider He Miao’s embarrassment. He put his hands behind his back and said, “I just came out of the study. It’s time to eat. Let’s go downstairs together.”
“Alright,” she said. He Miao nodded and shot Jing Yan a reproachful look. She jogged over to hold Old Master Jing’s hand and helped him down the stairs slowly.
Behind them, Jing Yan rubbed his nose innocently.
He had only just noticed that Old Master Jing had come out of the study with Butler Li. He did not mean to embarrass He Miao by not saying anything.
He Miao’s face turned red when dhe was caught cuddling with someone else’s grandson. She stuttered, “Grandpa, I… I have to go to my classmate’s house tomorrow to pay her a New Year visit. I’ll only be back at night.”
“Sure. Will Jing Yan go with you? ” Old Master Jing asked calmly, pretending that he had not seen anything.
He Miao shook her head. “I’ll go by myself. If you need anything, you can call me. I’ll be back immediately.”
“What could happen to me?” Old Master Jing waved his hand and said, “Don’t worry, just go and play. I may be old, but I’m very strong. I exercise often.”
He Miao thought about what she had overheard outside the study room and could not laugh. However, she could not keep being sad, so she forced a smile and asked, “There’s still some time before class resumes after the new year. Do you have anywhere you want to go? Jing Yan and I can go with you.”
This time, Old Master Jing stopped in his tracks. The smile on his face disappeared for a moment, but he concealed it well and said, “It’s been a while since I visited Jing Yan’s grandmother. When you’re free, come with me to offer incense to her.”
“Alright,” she said. He Miao nodded solemnly in agreement.
Old Master Jing’s kind smile returned. He narrowed his eyes and asked, “You’re visiting your classmate’s house tomorrow. If you need any New Year’s gifts, just go to the storeroom. There are a lot of things there. It’s a pity to just leave them there. You can just bring them to your classmate’s parents. It’ll save you the money to buy them.”
“Those are gifts from others, I can’t take them.” He Miao shook her head and refused. She refused to take the New Year’s gifts that someone else had given Old Master Jing. She was ready to buy some New Year’s gifts for Xu Meng’s family out of her own pocket.
