222 Chapter 222: Nothing Ever Changes Him

The bodyguards were speechless, knowing that they were to blame.

Nathalia still sat there, staring at the door of the emergency room as if she was unaware of anything going on. Then, a middle-aged man arrived with a few bodyguards following.

He still possessed his usual charm and confidence and the air of authority. It was Curt Davidson. He knitted his brows and asked, "Where's Spencer? How is he?" Though he appeared to be calm, wearing his usual cold and distant look, his voice carried a hint of worries.

Mrs. Davidson was at first taken aback by his arrival, then she looked annoyed. "What are you doing here? You are not welcome here." She said icily.

Damn his calm and cold look. He never changes. Nothing ever changes him. Has he ever loved anyone at all? Does he really love and care about his son?

Curt was a bit surprised by Mrs. Davidson's reaction. He coughed a little as if to clear his throat and said, "He's my son."

Mrs. Davidson had sat herself down, her head aching, her heart burning with anger. She threw a cold glance at Curt and turned to look at the door of the emergency room worriedly.

Curt asked the bodyguard a few questions. He didn't reproach them, yet the bodyguards felt even worse, having failed their job.

Everyone waited silently with a heavy heart and their heavy thoughts. It was so heavy that it felt suffocating.

"Dad. You are here. Please come with me. Quick." Matt suddenly appeared, ran to Curt, and grabbed his hand, panting heavily. He looked distressed.

Curt frowned, "Why? What happened? I'm here to see your brother..." Curt didn't really know what had happened then.

"Dad, mum...mum is dying. Please go and see her." Tears filled Matt's eyes. He managed to speak without losing control of his emotions. God knows how hard he was trying.

He recalled when he rushed down to the street to see his mother lying in a puddle of blood.

"What?!" Curt exclaimed. What the hell happened tonight?! He thought.

"Please. Hurry up. She wanted to see you the most. She's always loved you." Matt was on the edge of breaking down.

Matt took Curt away. Mrs. Davidson watched him leave. A sneer appeared on her face, her eyes indifferent.

They stopped at the door. Matt took a deep breath before opening the door. A surgeon and two nurses were standing by the bed, looking helpless. Curt couldn't believe the woman lying on the bed was the same woman that had been with him for years. She was covered with blood, broken, barely recognizable.

"Nancy."

Hearing the familiar voice, Nancy suddenly awakened. She opened her eyes and smiled. "Curt. Honey, you are here. I'm so happy, but I'm not looking very well now...I need to dress up..."

Surprisingly, Curt abandoned his usual indifference and coldness. He assured her, "You look beautiful, as always." For all these years, I have hardly really looked at her.

The sudden liveliness Nancy was showing made Matt worry even more. He had the feeling of losing his mother soon. A sharp pain attacked his heart.

"I'm so pleased to hear that." She smiled happily. "Honey, I'm so lucky that I've met you. There isn't a single moment that I regret..."

Nancy had been with Curt since she was twenty, and him only. She loved him, really loved him. He was handsome, charming, intellectual, wealthy, and generous. He was the best man for her.

She recalled the first time they met and how he looked at her with a smile. She fell in love with him at first sight and since then, had been loyal to him even though he never thought about marrying her.

"I don't deserve it." Curt sighed.

Nancy started to sound weaker and weaker as the liveliness on her face faded. "I know...you don't love me." She had to pause to catch her breath before she continued, "I'm just a substitute. But I'm happy. I'm content. I have Matt. Can I make one last request, please?"

"Tell me." Curt frowned slightly.

With great effort, Nancy slowly turned to look at her son. Her eyes were filled with love and affection. "Please look after Matt. You will be his only family..." she said weakly. I'm such a useless mother. My son has suffered so much because of me. She thought remorsefully.

Matt grabbed his chest with his hand as if to stop the pain burning in his heart.

"He's my son too. I will look after him." Curt looked a bit displeased, his tone apathetic. However, Nancy didn't seem to notice. She felt relieved and extended her hand to Matt, which Matt took and held tightly. "Matt, my boy, you need to be strong..."

His heart ached so much that Matt found it difficult to breathe. "Mum, I will do anything, anything for you. I just want you to stay. Please don't leave, mum." He sobbed.

She was his mother, the one who loved and cared about him the most. Everything she'd done, she did it for him, even though she had done things the wrong way.

"Matt, I want you to be successful...to be looked up upon. Can you...promise...me?"

Matt nodded without thinking. "Yes, mum. Yes. I promise you anything."

Hearing so, Nancy smiled the last time and closed her eyes. Her head dropped to one side, and her hand slipped down. The monitor announced the stop of the heartbeat.

"Mum! Mum!" Matt cried out, still holding his mother's hand. He buried his head next to her and sobbed desperately. Curt stood by the bed, wearing a heavy frown.

The doctor let out a heavy sigh and said, "I'm sorry."

Like a wounded wild animal, Matt wailed. "No. No. Mum, wake up! You were saying you wanted to go traveling with me just this morning! I never had time. Mum. I will go with you now. I will go. Wake up, mum..."

It was too late.

He had never cried so hard, shed so much tears. Curt felt a sudden pain seeing Matt crying. He patted his back gently and said, "It's alright. It's alright. Matt. Mum is in peace. I will look after you."
