A black BMW rolled up into the parking, and two people got out of the car. One was a dashing male with his hair slicked back and wore tinted aviators to conceal his eyes. The other was a woman with wavy hair and an exquisite face. They were both in their business attires and waltzed in like VIPs.
The asylum only received a few visitors from time to time, but these two were not visitors they were not unwilling to have. The elite squad members Eight and Ten escorted them with high alert. If they failed to protect them from any harm, the two would be unable to recover.
That was the status these two had in the asylum.
Director Sun had gotten ready and started his day early today because of their arrival. The sun was yet to rise, and yet everyone was already up and alert. Even if he had grievances because of their demands, he still couldn't say no to the two visitors.
He then greeted them with a smile. "Sergeant, Miss Qiao… please." He led them to his inner office and entertained them at the couches at the side, his secretary serving them tea. Director Sun cleared his throat. "The last time we talked on the phone, you only led a very interesting subject to me.
"Today, you led the big ones to me." Director Sun grinned. "Sergeant, if I may, when are you going to bring in the second subject?"
"Director Sun, don't forget. We still haven't heard about results from your end." Chu Youlan, who was wearing the Qiao Yun disguise today, smiled meaningfully at the director as she spoke in Song Qixi's behalf, "The second subject is indeed ready, but have you tried prodding the first one we sent?"
"Hehe, about that..." Director Sun cleared his throat. "We don't need to. He's… pretty much on the active side. He's already placed at security level five. However, it seemed that he had no intention of cooperating with us willingly. We might have to deploy… more… to convince him,"
"Active? How active?"
"He willingly engaged against Codename: Abbadon." A woman walked inside the office and smiled brightly at the guests. "I'm sorry for arriving late, Sergeant, Miss Qiao. I'm Dr. Fan; I lead Project Red Justice. It's such an honor to meet a pair of our donors."
Chu Youlan eyed the doctor and watched as she sat down across them. She heard that they were going to meet the project lead for today, and they couldn't really be so unprepared. Her lenses had a built-in camera, capturing everything that she looked at.
Right now, the computer connected to it should be looking up information about this Fan Meiling. Soon, the assistant would be receiving a compiled report that would be read to her hidden earpiece.
As for Song Qixi, he was doing the same. However, he was not interested in the doctor's background. He then smiled at the doctor smiling back at them. "So… tell me about this… engagement?"
"4-28 seems to be actively standing up against the greater ghosts inside the facility. Just like an apex predator being introduced to his new hunting grounds. However, he seemed to be less stable than we thought so we're double-checking all our records.
"Though… that didn't stop him from engaging in a battle against two of Abbadon's ghosties. Based on the reports I received, 2-56's possessing spirit and 4-19's ghost baby acted up and brought the readings into a spike. Moreover, they did so in a public place… the fourth floor of the Sick Hall."
Fan Meiling placed a thumb drive on the table. "You can review the readings and all our references inside that thumb drive. You'd be surprised as to how many distinct electromagnetic frequencies clashed during that fight. Also… I wanted to ask…
"Are you aware that 4-28 carries more than just the child?" She took a deep breath and asked, "Something that exceeded all our readings showed up during their battle, around the time the ghost baby and the possessing spirit weakened terribly.
"I have a feeling that 4-28 just introduced a far stronger king to my home."
Song Qixi didn't take the thumb drive, but Chu Youlan did. His eyes remained at the very animated movements of the doctor. "I see. You think of it as a king only?"
Fan Meiling blinked and then glanced at their director before she answered, "We have no records of a stronger existence. The Mian family had hidden all the locations of sealed demons while the Qiao family could only be so generous as to lend us Grade-A ghost kings for the project.
"I'm afraid I can't get an accurate reading as for the higher being. If that ended up being beyond the ghost king level, we needed to know and arrange extra precautions for the project."
"The child is a demon. However, it would not do anything more than what its father would say." Song Qixi shook his head. "4-28, as you call him, could only inherit a sliver of the child's power. Unlike possessing spirits, the ghost child can operate separately from its host."
"Erm, that only accounts for two entities." Fan Meiling was shocked, but she blurted out something else. She then cleared her throat. "The readings we have… suggest the presence of this demon, a ghost king, and a transcending greater ghost. Even if we remove the d-demon and..."
Director Sun only cleared his throat. "Sergeant, you told us that 4-28 has the strength of at most a newly-risen yet well-fed greater ghost. How come the readings we get are not coinciding with your reports? Is there something amiss?"
The man in question, though, was zoning out a little. He then flicked his gaze at the director after noting the sudden silence. Before he could ask again, Chu Youlan took over. "That is why we're here to see you. We obtained new information about 4-28, and it's deemed necessary for us to share."
Song Qixi cleared his throat. "We discovered that 4-28 is much more complicated than we thought. He was naturally a medium for ghosts, and it's no news for him to be inheriting abilities from higher entities. However, that's not the height of his power.
"Director, Doctor, have you heard of Project Hades?"
…
Yun He walked into the food and leisure hall along with his patients. They occupied the table they all used to before and quietly ate as soon as their food was given. Liu Xiaodan asked Nurse Yun to schedule a meeting with him and Director Sun, but it would take quite a while as the director was busy.
For now, he was going to sit in the leisure hall doing nothing again like always.
Unlike the last few days, the group of paranormal survivors was seemingly getting better collectively. Most of the deranged and vigilant ones were now very laid-back and relaxed. If anything, only that guy facing his turn for the treatment was the one dreading the future.
"Oh, someone new just came in," one of the neighbors at Liu Xiaodan's table whispered, and everyone else turned to the door. The new person seemed to be tough and murderous, seemingly from another deranged killing. He clearly didn't fit in the asylum, but he was… smiling.
"I don't like his face," another whispered before everyone turned back to their food. Liu Xiaodan joined them in not caring, but he felt like someone just stood behind him. The other neighbors froze in fright, but Liu Xiaodan only listened.
"You… I've seen that mug in the news." The man grinned as he towered behind Liu Xiaodan. "What was it again? Eighteen people? Right, eighteen people died in your killing spree. Do you think you can easily live it down because you're staying in here?"
The neighbors were all shocked. Eighteen people? They heard him say that he had indeed killed real humans, but… a young man like him could kill eighteen people?
"If you're here to avenge Ren Ditian, feel free to try—"
Just before he could finish, the newcomer had already grabbed him into a chokehold. Liu Xiaodan only let him squeeze his neck as much as the new guy wanted, the father not even choking for air.
The nurses and guards went to stop him, but the man grabbed the fork from the table and held it against Liu Xiaodan's chin, threatening them that he would stab the hostage if they tried to subdue him. Even Yun He was worried about the turn of events.
It's just that…
"Don't worry! Just relax..." Liu Xiaodan held his hand up and stopped the guards from doing anything. He then sighed. "You, I don't know who you are, but you probably don't want to do that."
"Shut it!"
"Nurse Yun, please get ready for someone getting stabbed in the neck." Liu Xiaodan sighed as the newcomer went through the motion even before Yun He could respond to the hostage.
Stab! Blood spurted… but it was from behind Liu Xiaodan. The newcomer dropped him immediately and grabbed onto his own neck. Yun He ran to the newcomer and tried to help out in easing the bleeding. The other nurses had also acted as soon as Nurse Yun called for them.
Liu Xiaodan crawled away from the crowd and felt the back of his neck. Blood… he then felt his skin break out with hives just from the sudden contact. The father only sighed again before he walked to a nurse whose hands weren't needed with the newcomer. "Hello, can you help me instead?"
"What did you do?" The nurse's eyes bulged as he faced Liu Xiaodan. However, he gasped loudly when the hives began to crawl around Liu Xiaodan's neck. "Oh, my God, what's that? Allergic reaction? Are you going into shock?"
"Hopefully not."
"Hey, what's happening here?!" Captain rushed to the hall, knowing that they had VIPs in the facility at the moment. If something big happened—"It's you again?!"
"I didn't really do anything, I swear." Liu Xiaodan sighed as he thought about another punishment heading his way.
