311 Childbirth (Part 1)
Yue Jiaojiao did not have any interesting childhood experiences. Although she had been pampered since she was young, most of what she had were external rewards such as praises.
She sacrificed her time to play and consciously wanted to be an excellent child.
She didn’t expect that Zhao Zhan would remember everything after she had unintentionally mentioned it once.
“Li Miao, it’s getting late. I’ll go back first.”
“Alright… Aiya.”
Li Miao suddenly clutched her stomach.
“Are you okay?” Yue Jiaojiao hurriedly stood up. “Are you about to give birth?”
It was hard to be pregnant with twins, and many people couldn’t hold on until the day of their expected birth.
“My stomach doesn’t seem to hurt that much anymore.” Li Miao felt a little better after the kick. “I think I was kicked.”
“No, you’re about to give birth.”
Her lower body was dripping wet, and it was obvious that her water had broken.
“Don’t worry. Calm your breathing.”
It was the first time Yue Jiaojiao had to face such a situation. Although she was flustered, she tried her best to remain calm so as not to affect Li Miao’s emotions.
“I’ll ask Madam Qin to go to the workshop and get Dashan to fetch the midwife from the neighboring village.” Yue Jiaojiao’s mind was clear. “Wait for me.”
Li Miao sat on the chair, not daring to move. When she heard Yue Jiaojiao’s words, she quickly nodded.
Yue Jiaojiao shouted as she walked.
Madam Qin, who was helping Doctor Sun dry the medicinal herbs, heard her tone and hurriedly ran out of the courtyard. “What’s going on?”
“Madam Qin, bring Doctor Sun to Li Miao’s house, and then you go to the workshop to find Dashan to bring the midwife. Li Miao is about to give birth!”
“Oh my! Of course!”
When Yue Jiaojiao saw that Madam Qin had heard her clearly, she quickly ran back.
“Jiaojiao!”
The pain didn’t come too often, so Li Miao could still think. “Can you help me lay out the quilt and bed sheets at the end of the bed? It’ll be a waste if I dirty the mattress I’m laying on after I give birth.”
“I’ll do it right now.”
Yue Jiaojiao finished making the bed and walked over to support Li Miao. “You should lie down there instead.”
Li Miao slowly followed Yue Jiaojiao into the bedroom.
After she lay down, Yue Jiaojiao turned to the kitchen and lit the stove, preparing to boil a pot of water.
“Where’s Dashan’s wife?”
“In the room.”
Yue Jiaojiao brought Doctor Sun into the bedroom. In order to help the two avoid suspicion, she did not leave. “I don’t know when the midwife will be back. With you here, I feel more at ease.”
A woman giving birth was similar to having a trip to Hell and back.
With a doctor by her side, she could be a helper if he really encountered any critical problems.
“Don’t worry, I’ll take her pulse first.”
Doctor Sun muttered to himself for a while. “Her pulse is fine, she would need to use a lot of strength to give birth. She should eat something while it’s not very painful.”
Yue Jiaojiao and Doctor Sun looked at each other. Neither of them knew how to function the large stove in the kitchen.
“Doctor Sun, I’ll have to trouble you to stay in the courtyard. I have some pastries at home. I’ll go get some.”
Before Zhao Zhan left, he had made a pile of dried meat, date paste cakes, and other small snacks for her to eat when she read novels.
“My lady.” Madam Qin had already entered the room. “How is she?”
“Madam Qin, why are you back so soon?”
“I met Lizheng on the way and gave him two copper coins. I asked him to take Yang Dashan to find a midwife on the ox cart.”
Madam Qin paused for a moment to catch her breath. “I rushed here to help around with the other things so that you and Doctor Sun can focus on Li Miao. I went into the kitchen to take a look just now. That little hot water will not be enough. I’ll go and boil another pot of hot water now, and then quickly make her something to eat.”
Madam Qin was the only one present who had experience.
After hearing what she had to say, Yue Jiaojiao’s heart felt more at ease.
“Sure, then you can go ahead.” Yue Jiaojiao held Li Miao’s hand. “If you aren’t feeling unwell, you must tell Doctor Sun.”
Li Miao’s hair was already wet with sweat.
Her face was pale and she gritted her teeth. One look and one could tell that she was enduring a lot of the pain.
Doctor Sun took her pulse again, then touched her stomach through a thin blanket. “Everything is happening too quickly. She’s probably going into labor soon.”
