Four years later, when Wen Ning, who was overseas, received her father’s notice of critical illness, she almost broke down. She had hid her pregnancy from her father but it looked like she would have to face the music. She finally made up her mind to bring the three-year-old Wen Li back home.
When she got off the plane and rushed to the hospital, she realized that there were many people gathered outside her father’s ward.
These people pounded on the door of the ward furiously. Most of them had angry expressions on their faces.
“Wen Zhenghai, don’t play dead. Hurry up and come out to settle your debts! Do you think you won’t have to pay because you’re hiding in the hospital?”
“That’s right, Wen Zhenghai. We’ve been working together for so long. You can’t let everyone down! Come out and return the money!”
One of them tried to knock on the door, but someone else was obviously blocking the door from the inside.
Wen Ning’s face grew sullen and she thought to herself, “Are these people here to ask Father for money?”
“Excuse me, can you please make way?” Wen Ning tried to squeeze her way to the door of the ward, but she could not get past these angry people with her child.
“Who are you? Are you here to ask Wen Zhenghai for money too?” someone asked curiously.
Wen Ning shook her head. “No, I’m his daughter.”
“What? You’re Wen Zhenghai’s daughter? Then hurry and return the money! Your father owes our company two million dollars. Now that he’s hiding inside and pretending to be dead, you can be the one to pay up!”
“That’s right! Pay up!”
The group was agitated to hear that she was Wen Zhenghai’s daughter and crowded around her, causing Wen Li to burst out crying.
Wen Ning hugged Wen Li close and raised her voice. “Please cool down and listen to me.”
When the group appeared to have calmed down, Wen Ning spoke to them, “Everyone,I just got down the plane. Can we settle this together after I have understood the situation?”
“You just need to understand that you owe us money!”
“That’s right!”
With that, they became rowdy again.
Wen Ning took a deep breath and yelled, “Listen to me if you want the money! Otherwise, you won’t get a single cent!”
Everyone finally quieted down again.
Staring at the closed door of the ward, Wen Ning walked towards it and knocked on the door. “Uncle Su, are you inside? I’m Wen Ning. Could you please open the door?”
The door of the ward was finally opened. His father’s assistant, Su He, stood at the door and looked at Wen Ning excitedly. “Miss Wen, you’re finally back!”
“How’s my father now? Also… what’s going on? Why are there so many people here?” Wen Ning asked worriedly as she looked inside the ward.
Su He sighed and then told Wen Ning the reason. A business partner of the company had gotten into trouble, implicating her father’s company. A large amount of funds had been placed on that project, causing problems with the cash flow.
When the other partners heard the news, they came over to ask for the money that was owed to them. Since the company could not afford to fork out so much money, Wen Ning’s father fell ill in a moment of panic.
“Sick? I think Wen Zhenghai is just pretending! He’s hiding because he doesn’t want to pay us back!”
“That’s right!”
The crowd started shouting again.
Staring at her unconscious father on the hospital bed, Wen Ning took a deep breath and said to the people around her, “Everyone, if my father really doesn’t wish to return the money, wouldn’t it be better for him to go into hiding and not see you guys? He’s already sick. I hope you guys can give him time to recuperate! As for the money… I’ll think of a way to return it to you!”
Someone questioned on the spot, “What solution do you have?”
Wen Ning stared at him sternly and said, “Give me a week.. I promise I’ll pay you!”
