Sheryl's eyes were glazed over, and her focus blurred as she looked at Nick in utter disbelief. "Nick, where is Charles?"
Nick lowered his head, not knowing what to say. He could see how sad Sheryl was right now. How was he supposed to tell Sheryl that they hadn't found Charles yet? That would only crush Sheryl's hopes again. He couldn't imagine what would happen to Sheryl if she found out the truth.
Nick's uncomfortable silence was answer enough for Sheryl.
She could no longer maintain her calm. The tears that burst forth from her eyes carried an unimaginable grief that would melt any person's heart, including Nick's.
"Sher, don't worry. I am sure Charles is okay. Nothing is going to happen to him, trust me!" Nick didn't know what else to say. He furrowed his brows and looked at Sheryl nervously, hoping to ease, if not erase, her sorrow with his words.
Sheryl, however, found no assurance in Nick's words because she knew that he was just trying to comfort her. As she looked down at her feet and shook her head, even her loose hair, which veiled her face couldn't hide the tears from his eyes.
The thought that Charles would suddenly disappear from her life had never crossed her mind before. Although they were getting a divorce, Sheryl couldn't even imagine what it would be like to never see Charles again.
There was a time when she couldn't even think of being separated from him, let alone be separated by death. Her heart was heavy, burdened by the grief that was suffocating her.
"Sher, are you okay?" Nick walked up to Sheryl, worried by her lack of response.
Sheryl gasped for air, clutching at her chest as if she were having a heart attack. Black filled the edges of her vision, but suddenly she could hear her own heart beating inside her chest again.
She gradually managed to compose herself. Failing to utter a word in response, she shook her head at Nick, indicating to him that she was okay.
"Sher, please, get some rest. Charles is going to be fine," Nick urged. What else could Nick say?
Sheryl pushed him aside without saying anything and sat on her bed to look out the window, immersed in sorrow.
Nick knew he needed to stop Sheryl from blaming herself. Allowing her to drown in sadness wouldn't help them find Charles any fas
it," Isla said before she sealed her lips.
"Well, I should get back to work then, President Zhao." Phoebe bowed her head and walked out of the office.
After Phoebe left, Isla found herself lost in thought again. For some strange reason, she couldn't shake off the feeling that something bad had happened to Sheryl. So she decided to call her.
But when Sheryl didn't answer Isla's call, Isla was convinced that something was wrong. She got so worried, and she had asked Nick to fly to Malaysia because Sheryl wouldn't answer her calls. But now that Sheryl was still refusing to answer her calls even though Nick was with her. Isla couldn't stop wondering what had happened.
Aron had spent the whole morning trying to ease Isla's thoughts and anxiety. Unfortunately, all his effort had been undone with just a single unanswered phone call.
Isla took a deep breath and called Nick's phone.
By some strange coincidence, Nick was calling Isla at the same time. As a result, both of them received a voice message saying that the phone line was busy.
They both repeated this unknowingly for a few more times before they both gave up.
Isla wanted to break her phone as she looked at it in frustration.
Suddenly, Isla's phone rang.
"Nick, what happened?" Isla was too worried about Sheryl to greet him.
Nick took a glance at Sheryl, who was sitting on the bed. As he didn't want her to hear what he was about to say, he walked away before he answered, "Isla, listen to me! Sheryl is in a lot of trouble!"
