Chapter 311

That was when Lady Melissa remembered about Duke Gaston, as she turned her head around, trying to find him in the crowd of people before her eyes landed on him. Duke Gaston was wearing a black tuxedo, and he looked handsome.

Yet Lady Melissa wasn't focused on that, she was focused on his facial expressions. The poor Duke was just as stunned and shocked as Lady Melissa, even though he had never met his sister in this life before, he just had a feeling it was her, and seeing Lady Melissa's expression to see the woman, the man grew hesitant.

Since she could be reacting this way because of the possibility that she liked Duke Mason, or the other reason was that the woman that was standing just a few feet away from her was his actual sister.

Lady Melissa composed herself, knowing that once even one of the many people in the room took their eyes off of her, they were going to notice that something was 'off' and strange about Lady Melissa.

Lady Melissa felt horrible, on one hand, she felt terrible for Duke Gaston, as she had sort of broken her promise to him, and it must've been a shock for the man to just suddenly see his sister out of nowhere.

What was going to happen to Lady Melissa now? She had shared a contract- a bond with Duke Gaston, and although she didn't exactly break it, she didn't exactly fulfil the promise either, hence she was unsure of what was to come.

Duke Gaston had composed himself as well, after noticing that more and more people were starting to take their eyes off of the couple.

Lady Melissa felt like she was going to cry as if she was going to break down at any moment or second right now, yet she felt idiotic, she didn't even know why she was going to cry in the first place.

Although she had gone through a lot, she hadn't cried for any sort of reason because of this in the past.

Duke Gaston quickly approached Lady Melissa, as the both of them shared some small talk with each other, the both of them wary of the number of eyes and ears in the place even though it didn't seem so.

"How about we get some fresh air?"

Duke Gaston suggested, as Lady Melissa nodded her head, she needed some fresh air, plus going to the balcony would be a nice change of scenery, knowing that she was a little stressed with everything that was going on right now.

Everything was just too fast for Lady Melissa to even process it, for her to even just think of her own thoughts, why she felt that way, and how Duke Gaston's sister just suddenly appeared for two-three months before the expected time period.

"I'm sorry."

Lady Melissa said, as she broke the silence between the two of them in the balcony, they were the only ones there, as Lady Melissa decided that now would be the best time for her to apologize to him.

Duke Gaston didn't say anything, nor did he react in any way, as the man just continued to watch the stars that were above both him and Lady Melissa, although he didn't look like he resented this, he didn't seem like he was fond of it either.

Before Lady Melissa could even manage to get another word out of her lips, the man was already gone, he had gone back inside, leaving Lady Melissa alone in the balcony as she gazed under the stars.

'I wish that for once, I'll never be the second choice.'

Lady Melissa thought in her head, as she wished for it, she knew that it sounded stupid, yet she couldn't just help but wish for it, she was desperate, and even though there weren't any falling stars in sight, she just wished.

Lady Melissa soon headed back inside after wishing, as she sighed, knowing that she wasn't ready to face whatever that was going to challenge her, but that just made things more fun.

Unbeknownst to Lady Melissa, as soon as she turned her head back, there was a shooting star, and just maybe, it would grant Lady Melissa's wish.

Lady Melissa went back inside, as she felt that she was completely disregarded for, forgotten as she saw Duke Mason and Lady Charlotte (Duke Gaston's sister), as the man was seemingly introducing the Lady to the other nobles.

Lady Melissa felt a pang of jealousy go through her heart, not knowing why, but she felt jealous seeing the sight of the two of them together, as her heart tightened seeing that they were holding hands with each other.

Duke Mason saw Lady Melissa out of the corner of his eye, as he tried to talk to her, yet he was ignored, Lady Melissa felt betrayed, yet she couldn't explain why. She had no right to even feel this way in the first place.

At that exact moment, gunshots were fired as Lady Melissa's eyes widened once more, she was really in for a long day today.

"Everybody get down and go through that door! Now!"

Duke Gaston said as he shouted at the top of his lungs, directing people to go through the one, and the only exit from the venue, as Lady Melissa scanned the room, trying to figure out where the bullets had come from.

Luckily, nobody had been injured so far.

Lady Melissa spoke too soon, as one of the men shot the chandelier, as it fell onto one of the many nobles, Lady Melissa immediately helped Duke Gaston lift up the chandelier, as the woman was somehow not too severely injured.

Sure, the woman had a few broken bones, but it wasn't that bad that it would be considered an 'emergency' or something, nonetheless, Duke Gaston shared a look with Lady Melissa, before the man helped escort the woman to safety.

Meanwhile, Lady Melissa kept telling people to evacuate, before her eyes stumbled across Lady Charlotte, she hadn't seen the woman since earlier, assuming that the Lady had already evacuated, just like the rest.
