Raylene alternated her gaze between the tall man and the little girl in this room with her.
Earlier, her husband had patted her hand to assure her that he would take care of everything.
Soon after, the child had lifted her head as though she was startled and ever since had been staring at her father with a look of disbelief in her eyes.
The Countess knew nothing of what the Earl might have said to their child for her to have such a strange reaction.
However, she placed her trust in him as she waited for him to complete the conversation they most probably were having by the means of their etchers who must be roaming around in their estate.
While Raylene waited patiently, the father and daughter were gazing at each other without blinking.
Rutherford knew that he was asking something difficult from her but it was for her own well-being.
Therefore, he decided to stay strong after declaring to Yvonne that this was the punishment he had chosen for her this time.
She was free to decide which path she wished to tread.
She could either attend these parties and say a few words to the other nobles who made an appearance…
Or she could face her mother's wrath which would definitely erupt after hearing of the ridiculous and dangerous stunt that the child had tried to pull just a few days ago.
Yvonne's eyes shifted towards her mother who was now seated with a calm yet slightly clueless expression on her face.
'I haven't said anything to her yet.' Rutherford's voice reached her once again after he noticed her actions and this time they brought a sigh from her lips.
Her relieved expression made the Countess raise her brow as she was now beginning to get curious to know what their secret conversation was all about.
Noticing this intrigued glint in her mother's eyes, Yvonne panicked and shot an anxious gaze towards her father.
'I will attend them!' She clamored her answer so that he would help her in keeping that incident a secret from her mother.
Raylene was a soft-hearted mother most of the time but she too could become scary when needed.
Yvonne had experienced just how fierce her mother could get and hence made up her mind in a matter of moments.
Even her father's wrath could not compare to her mother's which she wished to not experience ever again.
Therefore, she did not hesitate before agreeing to the plan they had come up with.
'Good choice, Vonna.' Rutherford's slightly gloating and snickering voice echoed in the child's ear, making her glower at him before looking away.
"Ray, our obedient daughter has agreed to act according to our plan." He announced the result of his hard work to his wife.
Raylene clapped her hands and grinned widely before giving her husband a side hug as a gesture of her appreciation.
The Earl smiled at his wife before looking down at his lap, concealing the nervousness that had flashed across his eyes.
Just earlier, he had been struggling to keep a straight face while waiting for Yvonne's answer which he hoped to be in his favor.
After all, if she remained adamant about not going along with their plan of attending more social events then she would not be the only one in trouble.
He had threatened her using her mother's wrath but he too would be affected by that same burning wrath.
Raylene would surely punish Yvonne for attempting to harm herself but Rutherford too would not have been able to get out of this incident unscathed.
He had knowledge of what had taken place and instead of informing this matter to his wife, he had kept it a secret from her until now.
She would be furious with him just as much as she would be with their child.
Therefore, when Raylene had questioned him about his methods for getting their child to agree with their plan, he had remained mum and not uttered another word.
Later when he was waiting for Yvonne's reply, he maintained a composed facade but that was exactly what it was, a well-maintained facade to fool her.
He was trembling on the inside, hoping that things would work out in his favor.
Some day in the future, he would surely reveal this incident to his wife but now was not the time.
'Maybe a few years later…' He added in his heart as any time soon would still get him in trouble with her.
Thankfully, his child had acted as per his expectations, proving that she too was just as opposed to facing her mother's wrath as he was.
Having fooled his child into agreeing to this plan, Rutherford breathed a secret sigh of relief that none of the ladies in the room had noticed.
Once he was back to looking composed, he raised his head and smiled at Raylene before glancing at their child.
Yvonne was sitting still with a sulking look on her face and this time it was correlating to her true feelings.
Too many things were going against her initial plans and she was not liking this one bit.
'Live your life as you would, he said!' She glowered and snarled while recalling the words that the Bird God had said to her before disappearing from this world once again.
Her plan of staying away from the Royal family was now as good as gone and today another one of her plans had fallen through.
She desired to steer clear from the attention currently focused on her but her parents wanted her to do just the opposite.
If she were to say no, she would be in more trouble than she could even imagine.
Therefore, even when her mind screamed no, her lips had blurted her acquiescence to the matter at hand.
Thus with a heavy heart, Yvonne St. Claire finally resigned to her pitiful fate which was moving things in the opposite direction of what she had in her mind.
"Though I will not change my birthday plans." The little girl announced when this thought sparked in her mind.
Her birthday would be here in a couple of weeks and she had special tasks to complete in the Valente fief during her visit there.
To ensure that this plan of hers was also not canceled, she put on a fierce expression, proving that she would not accept any more changes being made.
Raylene chuckled at this sudden shift in her child's behavior and nodded in acceptance.
"We will still be heading to my parents' house for your birthday." She added with a gentle smile as she also missed her father and wished to spend some time with the old man.
Rutherford was also gazed at with the same fierce look which made him nod to display his stance in this matter as well.
Her narrowed eyes eased up only after making sure that both of them were on the same terms regarding her demand.
Yvonne wasn't stubborn to spend her birthday at the Valentes for no reason, she had many tasks to accomplish during her stay there which were essential for the development of her company.
Therefore, even if she had compromised with her mother's plan of attending more parties, she would only do so until it was time for them to make their trip to the Valente estate.
"Only for the next few weeks," Raylene promised that she too would not like to see her daughter being exhausted after attending too many parties at once.
The plague had ended and the social life of the nobles currently in the Capital would soar once again.
Therefore, it was without a doubt that there would be too many events taking place in the near future.
However, she never planned to drag her daughter to every single one of them.
"We shall attend only a few important ones and then leave for the Valentes when the time comes." She explained the plan she had come up with earlier.
These were the most comforting words Yvonne had heard from the moment she had sat down in this Office.
So with a subtle smile on her face, she nodded her head as she approved of the plan her mother had made.
'I can sit in silence for a while before asking to leave.' She prepared a plan to deal with the hardships she would be facing soon enough.
The parents did not realize that their daughter was already thinking of ways to get out of these parties at the earliest.
However, even if they knew, they would have let her be as escaping was no longer an option for her.
