Chapter 258. Subtle things (3)
Wheel works production was sure that «Slayers» would become a big hit. There were various reasons behind this.
But the strongest reason is its characters.
Characters in a drama or a movie are the things that drive the plot and sometimes, just one character was enough to make a boring plot interesting.
That was the importance of characters.
«Slayers» also have many characters in it and all of them are distinct but at the same time, they are working towards the same goal.
That made them more interesting.
The plot of «Slayers» was not an entirely different concept but it was different from other ancient styled dramas because of its characters.
The plot of the drama was nothing, if not for his characters.
People's attention will be attracted to the main character, Xie Xian or the spirit princess played by Tang Lan.
It can even be the antagonist, Cao Xu.
But there was one character that will connect them all to each other. That was the character of the crown prince, Xu Tingsheng.
Without him, Xie Xian would not clash with Cao Xu and no love would blossom between the spirit princess and Xie Xian.
People may ignore him at first, but when one looks closely, they will notice that Xu Tingsheng was a really interesting character in itself.
"What words do you think will describe the character of Xu Tingsheng?"
"What type of question is that?"
Na Wen looked at Ren with a strange look on his face. It was the look which was saying that Ren was asking something ridiculous.
Still, Ren just repeated his question and Na Wen had no choice, but to think about it.
"Brave, full of ambition and someone who knows how to differentiate between people. A person who can use you without you knowing that you were being used."
Na Wen answered after thinking for a while and Ren nodded at those words.
Xu Tingsheng was really like that. He has a huge ambition of ruling the empire and even conquering the other kingdoms.
For that, he can do anything.
"So, what do you think is the reason behind his ambition?"
Ren's second question was on the ambition of Xu Tingsheng.
It was a fairly easy question for Na Wen, unlike the first one. He didn't take much time to think about it and answered.
"It was because of his mother who wanted him to be the emperor from the start. He got his ambitious nature from her."
As he finished his words, Na Wen contemplated on the reason behind Ren asking these questions but he found nothing.
He can just stare at Ren with a suspicious look.
"No, you are entirely wrong."
Suddenly, Ren said that and Na Wen could not help but think that he had heard wrong.
"What did you say?"
"I said that you are entirely wrong. The reason behind Xu Tingsheng's ambitious nature wasn't his mother, but something else."
Ren said as he started explaining the reason behind Xu Tingsheng's ambitious nature.
Actually, there was something really common between Xu Tingsheng and Cao Xu, aside from their ambitious nature.
They both hated their mother!!
Yes, Xu Tingsheng really hated his mother. It was because his mother never saw him as her son.
She just saw him as someone who will give her immense power after becoming the emperor. Rather than Xu Tingsheng, she was much more ambitious.
That's why he hated his mother a lot.
Xu Tingsheng would always find ways to oppose his mother. So, he doesn't have any reason to become the emperor, something his mother wanted.
"This was not written in the screenplay."
Na Wen said when Ren finished his words.
He remembered reading the screenplay before and he has even studied the character of Xu Tingsheng, but there was nothing like what Ren said.
"I know this because I have read the screenplay over and over again. It may not be clearly revealed but one can see Xu Tingsheng's hatred towards his mother in some of the scenes."
There was not one example like this.
There were several things that were not clearly written in the screenplay but one can see them by the behaviour of the characters.
It was a really subtle way to show the emotions of the characters and Na Wen had failed to notice these things.
'He has still not understood it well.'
Ren thought as he stared at Na Wen's confused face. Then, he again opened his mouth.
"Episode 3, scene 23. Episode 12, scene 17. Episode 16, scene 6. These are the parts when there was a mention of his mother. You should look over at it again later."
Na Wen was silent for sometime when he heard that. There were lots of thoughts going inside his brain but in the end, he asked.
"What are you trying to imply here?"
Just Ren trying to meet Na Wen was weird in itself. They don't have a good relationship with each other on the set.
Ren had even gotten into trouble because of the feud, when he was not even involved in it.
Instead of getting angry, he was sitting with him, and they were talking about the screenplay and the character of Xu Tingsheng.
It was more than just strange.
"I'm just trying to imply that you have not understood the character of Xu Tingsheng at all. It is also the reason behind you performing worse than the other actors."
"What will you get from doing it?"
That was the second question in his heart. Na Wen doesn't know the reason why Ren was doing all this.
"I don't think I will get anything from it. The best thing would be you taking my advice and returning back to the cast."
Na Wen frowned when he heard that.
He doesn't have any intentions of returning back to the cast, no matter what. Ren was just wasting his time if he wanted to persuade him.
"I don't have any intentions on returning."
"I know that. That's why, I'm not straightly trying to persuade you to come back. You won't listen to me even if I told you to come back."
"Yes, I won't."
Ren slowly smiled when he got that straightforward response. He had also expected that kind of response from the start.
He continued the talk.
"I'm just trying to help you a bit by telling you about the character of Xu Tingsheng."
"What will you get by helping me?"
Na Wen asked with the frowning expression still on his face.
"I won't gain anything but it's not like I will lose anything either."
Ren had not come here with the mindset of persuading Na Wen back to the cast or with some other intentions.
He was just trying to help out an actor.
"I really don't like you…"
Na Wen silently muttered and Ren laughed hearing that. Then, he asked his final question.
"Do you think that you understand the character you are playing?"
"Yes, I think I understand it."
If he can't even understand a character, then Na Wen should have already stopped acting and went into business like his older brother.
But does he really understand Xu Tingsheng?
"You know I don't think that you understand your character."
Ren said as he stared outside at the red glow of the sunset. The day was finished and night will descend soon.
