Chapter 42 The Second Victim
My face turned red instantly, though I swore that was my physiological response. Who would have thought I would bump into an almost naked Wen Jiubo. His body was…
I never imagined, beneath his clothes, what his body might look like. It was so perfect. His muscles would make any man who struggled to keep their bodies fit envy him. His pectorals were flat and firm, and his slim physique was in ideal shape, neither skinny nor thickset. I couldn’t move my eyes away from this breathing masterpiece.
Frankly, I could die and go to heaven when I looked at his body, why did Wen Jiubo have this perfectly sculpted frame? My body was a joke compared to his, I was so ashamed of it that I couldn’t even go to a public bath anymore.
Then, something below his left pec caught my eye.
Do my eyes deceive me? Is that…a wound on Wen Jiubo‘s chest? A wound nearly the diameter of a soup can?
This ugly wound seemed like a burn, which was conspicuous on his smooth skin. I immediately thought of what Bai accidentally told me.
When did he get this wound? And how did he get it? I remember the events of Wang Zhong, although Wen Jiubo jumped in front and took a knife for me, that time his wound immediately healed, there wasn’t even a scar left on his chest.
So what’s the story behind this injury?
“Well, why are you obsessively staring at my body like this?”
Wen Jiubo’s low voice came from above, filled with joy and teasing.
“No, I’m not!” I took two steps back, quite embarrassed. I suddenly realized how inappropriate my behavior was. “It’s you that showed up without notice. And half-naked at that!”
Wen Jiubo pointed behind him, at the room he had stepped out of. “I just had a shower and bumped into you when I came out, how is this my fault?”
With my face flushed red, I argued, “You should wear a bathrobe or something!”
On the other hand, Wen Jiubo didn’t feel weird at all. “This is my house, why I should listen to your orders here?”
I was dumbfounded. Wen Jiubo smiled softly saying, “Well, please excuse me, I need to come through and put some clothes on.”
“Wait!” I grabbed his arm and looked again at his chest wound before asking, “This injury, how did you get it?”
Wen Jiubo instantly covered the burn with his hand and whispered, “It’s just a small wound, it’s nothing.”
“Oh?” I questioned him. “You got hurt when Wang Zhong stabbed you, yet I saw your wound heal immediately. Why doesn’t this one heal?”
“Some wounds heal fast, and others heal slow. Isn’t that normal?” Wen Jiubo frowned, adjusting his arm over the burn.
“No, I don’t believe you!” I blurted out. “Wen Jiubo, are you hiding something from me?”
Unexpectedly, Wen Jiubo gave a cold reply, “There are a lot of things I haven’t told you yet, are you going to find them out one by one?”
I stared at him, bewildered. Was there anybody in the world who was more shameless than him?
“Okay, let me through. I need to change.” Wen Jiubo looked down at my hands still on his arm. “Do you wanna go inside with me and see how I change my clothes?”
I felt my face burning again, so I quickly moved my hands away.
“I’m fine, don’t worry.” Wen Jiubo reached out and ruffled my hair before going inside his room.
I scratched my head, disappointed. I felt as if he was treating me like a child again.
My phone started to ring, breaking me out of my thoughts. I took it out and saw Shi Yitong’s name on the screen.
“Hello?” I picked up the phone. “About the girl who jumped off the building two years ago, what have you found?”
To my surprise, Shi Yitong was panting, he gasped, “Ay, Gu Yu! I need to tell you something else. Are you at that old house? Come back to the university ASAP, another…another person died!”
I was shocked, “Another? What happened?!”
“It’s a girl in the Journalism Department. This time, she had no wounds on her. She took a nap on a table, and for no reason, her heart stopped!”
“Does she still have breath?!” I prompted.
“I don’t know yet. I’m on my way to campus, I called you immediately when I heard the news!” Shi Yitong blurted. “Anyway, come back now!”
“Ay——” Shi Yitong hung up on me before I could ask anything else.
While I hesitated about whether I should call back, Wen Jiubo came out of his room. He wore a button down shirt and suit pants, and his hair was gathered into a ponytail. It seemed like he had already known we needed to go out.
“Wen Jiubo!” I didn’t have the time to think about his clothes. I quickly walked up to him. “We need to go back to the campus. Shi Yitong just called me and said a girl died.”
Wen Jiubo nodded. “I heard you. Let’s go, seems we’ll have another sleepless night.”
“Wait, wait, wait, I’ll go with you!”
Suddenly Bai’s voice echoed through the hallway. The ferret scurried around a dark corner, looking at us with eagerness written on his face.
“Is this about a dead man breathing? So much fun! Gu Yu, take me with you!”
I got angry, “Bai! Where were you when I needed to ask you something? And now you show up? This is about someone’s death, nothing about that is fun!”
Bai crawled back and said bitterly, “I know, I’m just trying to help. Don’t say it like I’m ruthless. However, this thing is so rare, even if I’m a demon, I’ve never heard of a breathing corpse.”
I sighed. I didn’t want to argue with a ferret, so I brought him with me.
The Journalism Department was affiliated with our Humanities Department. For some unknown reason, these bizarre events seem like they only happened in the Humanities Department. When Wen Jiubo and I arrived, many students were standing outside the building. We quickly found the classroom without having to ask other students.
Shi Yitong and my roommates stood nearby. They looked like a mess, and one of them even missed a few buttons on his shirt. Judging from their outfits, they must have come directly from the bar in a hurry.
