44 The Bridge

Name:Welcome to Arcana Author:WhosDatDude
"How do we intend to get this up there?"

"Simple."

He goes to the rock where he was originally sitting at and pulled out a massive carry bag, "This bag is made of chimera leather. This stuff is capable of handling a few tonnes."

He started to pack the meat into the bag, "Probably should move fast, you probably don't want to be out here when the night comes. There are some pretty nasty critters that come out at night."

"What exactly are we talking about?"

"Certain types of arachnid and of course the salamanders. Even I would have some problems with that one. The salamanders in this cave are elemental by nature. From electric to fire. It's a bit annoying to fight the blue flame salamanders."

"Wouldn't that be a problem for the Town?"

"No, they roam around on the ground. The only real problem is the bats. They tend to be annoying, but they are herbivores by nature. All they do is fly against the town because they are a spiteful bunch of shits."

"You make it sound like they are an actual problem."

"Glow bats, bloody bastards are the size of a small car. You try starting a family with those freaks out and about."

"You actually have family here?"

"Yip, a daughter, and son, sixteen years for my girl and twelve for my boy. It was a nightmare at first when she was younger. She was a bit of a tomboy, my boy, not so much. I think I am going to send him to America. He isn't really cut out for this world. Smart as a whip though. You have any family?"

"No, I am a sole survivor."

"Sole survivor, huh? What happened?"

"I rather not talk about it."

"Suit yourself, by the way. You never did tell me your name?"

"Radley."

"Well Radley, my name is Adrian. A pleasure to meet your acquaintance."

He held out his hand to shake. Radley took it, "Uuhm, sure. Pleasure."

"You don't talk much, do you?"

"I tend to keep to myself."

"Right, right, but I will tell you this. You ain't gonna live long if you go it on your own at the level you are. Beyond level ten, not so much. I could offer you some training, while you do have the reactions of a bloody god at your level, you lack fundamental combat training. You have a lot of wasted movement and the like. It's going to kick you in the ass. In beast battles that might not be such a problem but against other humans, much more of a problem."

"I faced off against a level five once as a level one, and I am still standing."

"I take it you lost that fight if you are putting it like that."

Radley didn't reply.

"Right, so with your talent you might have actually stood a better chance. Proper training and experience most of all is critical."

Radley rolled his eyes, "I'm not interested."

"Sure, but just keep it in mind. I am willing to train you. Tell me, who was your sponsor?"

"I don't have one."

"Well then. What if I became your sponsor?"

"You aren't the first one to offer. So, I will graciously refuse."

"Stubborn, huh? I can work with that…"

Radley closed his eyes and sighed. This was going to be one long trip.

The arrived at the foot of the pillar and only then did Radley appreciate the sheer size of the column. They made them why up the stairs. That was a long way up and there were a lot of stairs. Blobby scampered

Adrian laughed seeing his expression, "It's easier to get down. There is a lovely rope we use to get down."

Radley looked at Blobby who was trailing them at a distance and beckoned him closer, "Hey little guy. I need you to hide and stay low. Keep out of sight until you see me, okay?" blobby ran into the thick undergrowth and waited.

Adrian looked at the curious critter scampering away, "I have been meaning to ask you? What is that thing?"

"Special."

"Okay, moving on."

It took them more than an hour to cover all the stairs. While Radley wasn't particularly tired, it was still extremely tedious.

When they got to the top, Radley surveyed all the buildings. There was a general Victorian age feel to it with rather dull grey colors. This place looked more like a horror town that anything else. The town looked like it was built onto the spire, but with more than sufficient walking area. An arch bridge connected two towns. Radley looked over the edge to see the bridge better. Adrian spoke up, "Yeah, better warn you ahead of time. There is something akin to a small civil war going on. East against West Summit Town. Freaking ridiculous. My brother lives in West Summit Town and I live in East Summit town. I had to get a special permit just so I could use the bridge."

"Uuhm, why is there a…war?"

"Differences in opinion. We actually have two Magistrates. The two didn't agree with how the other handled the law. There were debates, debates turned into violence and violence turned into petty war. When we cross the bridge stick close to me."

"That is a rather inane reason to fight."

"We have been trying but there is a perfect split among the populace. Who knows what the real reason is. That bridge is the battlefield unless of course, you have a permit. Then they pretty much leave you alone."

"But I don't have one."

"Yip, and that's why I said you should keep close."

The bridge was long and wide. It also seemed to have seen some fighting. Some of the banisters were missing. There were potholes almost everywhere.

One of the men waved at them. Adrian removed a piece of paper from his pocket and pointed it into the air, "I have my permit. The boy is with me."

"Yeah, sure. The boy still needs to pay a levy."

Adrian smiled, but this was different, "You clearly have a death wish."

"Of course not, but the boy doesn't have a permit, which means we can charge him."

"You want to go up against me?"

"I know you will lose your permit if you do that."

"As long as I can rip your heart out, I will be fine with that."

"Seriously? You are willing to risk it for that kid?"

"Yeah, pretty much."

He mumbled it more to himself than anything else, "Must be some kid…"

They arrived at a shop where a woman was busy arranging some decorations, "Leia, where is that no good husband of yours."

"Oh, hey Adrian. His inside."

He nodded at her and both of them went inside.
