"That really is quite a peculiar situation…"
Resting her back against my chest, Eve furrowed her burrows, staring in the distance of the deepest parts of her mind. Her eyes turned into slits as if she was trying really hard to figure something out, only for this tense expression to dissolve into a look of helplessness.
"It won't do. No matter what I thought about, in the long term, it would only bring us harm rather than a benefit."
That was one of our current problems. With how powerful I was just by myself, I had to be extremely cautious as to not bring unnecessary attention to my person. The same stood for Eve, with her bloodline added on top of how precious she would be to any potential aggression, and the same held for her step-sister.
To put it bluntly, for any cultivator of immortal rank, the three of us were walking treasure!
That's why, whenever we would consider taking any action, we always had to take the weight of the responsibility into account. After all, what would be the point of helping Makay out, if that would result in a huge expedition of people whom even I couldn't best in a fight? Not only would this beautiful and so far, but peaceful land would also turn into smouldering ruins, but what was even worse, the two or three of us would be once again thrown into the meatgrinder of politics and cultivation!
"And it's not like we can just confront him like that… If only… Wait a moment…"
A sudden idea struck my head. To be honest, calling it an idea was wrong, as it was rather a memory of a promise I made so far back in the past, before all those events that happened, that my mind simply stashed it so deep that it remained hidden from my sight so far!
"What happened?"
Startled by my sudden flinch, Eve turned her head to allow her a direct line of sight to my face. With her upper body following the movement of her neck, she inevitably rubbed her breasts against my chest, yet in this very moment, I was simply too startled by this wild memory to even notice it.
"Nothing much… I just recalled certain promise that I made a long time ago…"
Could I find a body somewhere around here? Or maybe I should be able to craft one? For now, the greatest problem of our situation was based on how every single person in our small group was… special. But what if I found a way to fulfil my promise and actually find a proper host for the owner of the golem that I met all the way back after I escaped from the arena city?
Outside of how ignoring my own oath would leave a bad taste in my mouth, I didn't know how it could affect my life in this world. It wasn't the familiar earth where people could throw promises left and right only to treat them like nothing on the very next day without any consequences, but who said that this lack of responsibility applied to this place as well?
If I were as conceited as to force the rules of magicless earth onto this clearly different place, I would only risk a divine punishment striking me down in the least opportune moment!
That's why, now that I remembered this promise that I made in the ancestral grounds of the folks that were now residing within my stronghold, I had no other choice but to actively seek the way to fulfil it!
And outside of this innate pressure to do so, there was still a point that by saving the lost soul of the long-deceased system user, I could learn a bit more about how other people that were in the same situation like me saw the world!
"So? Are you going to dive deep into your thoughts like you always do, while leaving me hanging like that? What promise did you make while I was sleeping?"
For some reason, when I looked at Eve's face, she looked clearly pissed. Or rather, there was a subtle hint of annoyance hidden within the curiosity that filled those big, clear eyes of hers.
"You see, right after we escaped from the arena city, we appeared on the island where my stronghold now stands. Initially, it was full of animal life and vegetation, but in an attempt to establish a source of power that would keep you in the frozen state as to give me more time to find a way to save you, I had to eradicate every single sign of life from that place. But then, I was met with several problems that forced me to go look for another island, from where I could poach some herbs and animals to breed."
Word by word, I quickly explained all the events that occurred back then to Eve in detail. Even though our souls were merged and she got to, at some point, experience every single thing that I did, the events that happened before her soul's embryo integrated into my own soul, were most likely shrouded in a mist of mystery for her.
"So that's the case… But I don't really get how bringing that person back to life would help us. Not only we can't be sure what would be his or her aims, even attempting something like that will be bound to attract some attention to us!"
Just like Eve said, any kind of shenanigans of this heavens-defying scale, were bound to be noticed. Or rather, that would be the case if not what was most likely about to transpire in the lands we were in!
"Eve… As ruthless as it might sound, especially after I wanted to talk with you about my worries and the urge to potentially help a fellow earthling… What if we were to just prepare everything we need for bringing that person back to life, but actually push the plan forth only when the conflict in this place erupts?"
