Chapter 65 - What Trap Did I Step Into?

Silence. Nothing but silence dawned on the entire hospital room. Matthew Xi stared at the accusing Zoey with a complicated gaze.

She often made him speechless. He wasn't cold... he's just being himself. And even if he was, one couldn't freeze to death by it.

If Zoey only knew that Matthew Xi took her words literally, she would cling on him like a lost child. Fortunately, humans couldn't read minds and Zoey could not easily guess what's the meaning behind his russet eyes.

*DING!*

Just then, the microwave produced a sound indicating that the reheating was done. "I'm kidding, hehe." Zoey awkwardly chuckled. She guessed he didn't get her joke, again.

"I'll get you — have you eaten?" The microwave was the perfect save for the awkwardness surrounding the room. Hence, Matthew Xi was about to prepare her the food.

However, knowing the time, he thought he might ask her first. After all, she might have had dinner already.

"Hmm?" Blinking her eyes many times, the corner of her lips slightly curled upward. She didn't see his question coming. How thoughtful.

"I did," she said, staring at his bewitching unconcerned surface. "But I'll still eat whatever you brought. We can't waste food, can we?" Beaming him a wink, Zoey gave her best smile. She hoped he'd fall in love with her beautiful smile.

Wow, confidence!

"Alright. Don't force yourself if you've already had enough." Seemingly unfazed by her coquettish gestures, Matthew Xi nodded his head slightly before he turned and headed to get the food.

Upon seeing his reaction, Zoey scrunched her nose up. 'Still no effect!' She thought inwardly. Little did she know, the tip of his ear gradually turned red.

Soon after reheating several more dishes, Matthew Xi prepared the overhead table. Placing each dish on the table, Zoey's eyes sparkled. No wonder he was giving her food, it was honestly a lot!

"Thanks for the food~!" Checking out each dish, Zoey knew a few of them. "Did you buy this for me?" She asked, raising her gaze to meet his.

"No, I didn't. We had a company dinner." Naturally, Matthew Xi prepared his ultimate lie. He didn't mind looking a bit of a cheapskate.

"Ohh..." Nodding, Zoey stared at him for a bit, which made him raise his brows.

"What?"

"Nothing." Shrugging her shoulders, Zoey picked up the spoon while he sat on the chair near the bed.

As she spooned some porridge, Zoey bit her lower lip as she restrained herself from smiling. 'What a terrible liar.' She muttered internally.

She recognized each dish, and everything was well prepared for someone with a healthy diet. It was no doubt he thought of foods that wasn't too heavy to eat at night.

Nevertheless, she found his denial cute and didn't want to expose him. With that unbothered front of him, Zoey would buy his lie if she wasn't observant. Unfortunately, she's a keen person.

"Aren't you going to eat?" After shoving her second scoop of porridge, Zoey turned her attention back to him.

"No. Thank you." Sounding inexpressive as ever, Matthew Xi answered truthfully. He had a bite when he waited for his chef to finish the foods he would bring to Zoey.

Yes, Matthew Xi changed his mind after he ordered his maid to wrap some dinner. Although his meal was meant to be light, he thought Zoey wouldn't like the concept of tonight's menu. Therefore, he bothered to ask his personal chef to prepare something more simple and light meal.

"Okay..." Zoey briefly raised her brows as she resumed on eating. He said nothing after that, only the sound of Zoey's constant giggle resonated across the room.

"What are you thinking?" Having had enough of hearing her giggle every once in a while, Matthew Xi arched his brow in suspicion.

By the looks of it, Zoey was planning something which he had a grim feeling about. Also, he was concerned that stress might have taken a toll on her.

"Nothing, just that... we looked like a true couple. I'm happy." After gulping a thin-sliced meat, Zoey lifted her gaze and met his.

"..." Are they? Do they look like a true couple? Matthew Xi gave thought of what she said to him. Was visiting her out of concern made it appear like that?

Thinking about it, Matthew Xi heaved a heavy sigh. He guessed she was right. Even before the first date, Matthew Xi and Zoey had met more than once.

While he was thinking about what she said, a sudden realization struck into his mind.

'What if she set the second and third date several months apart?' was the main concern that floated over his head.

Matthew Xi didn't think about it at first, but now that he already had this sudden thought, Matthew Xi stared at Zoey's innocent smile.

'What trap did I step into?' He asked himself, more like regretting not thinking much about this affair's contract more.
