Matthew Xi ended up saying nothing as he went back to his seat while chewing the small piece of brownie she shoved inside his mouth.
Zoey chuckled at his defeat while Matthew Xi felt too defeated to care. Therefore, the meal ended with Zoey trying to coax his crushed moral. Yet, he wasn't coaxed — not a bit.
"Darling, don't be mad~" Clinging on his arm, Zoey pouted as she stared at his inexpressive front. Obviously, he just glanced at her and said nothing.
"Our first date is coming soon. Let's kiss and make up. How about that?" She suggested, tilting her lips from ear to ear.
"See you until then." Finally, Matthew Xi spoke something upon arriving at the parking space. His tone gave his feelings by the utter defeat. That meant he would not see her the following days until the said date? How cruel!
Little did Zoey know, she's the cruelest. How could she always make her point in the most savage way possible? That's how Matthew Xi felt, at least.
"Aww... you won't see me until then?" Pouting, Zoey brought out her puppy eyes as she asked. Not that she truly meant it. Just for the sake of teasing him a bit more.
Matthew Xi gazed down on her trying hard 'adorable' expression. She shouldn't wear fitted dresses that outlined her every curves if she wanted to be cute. It just didn't match her figure.
Fortunately, Matthew Xi ignored her clothing while knowing she had a meeting with Richard Sun. The reason? It was pointless.
"Don't act like you feel bad about the wolf." Unfazed by her chumminess, Matthew Xi said, wearing his usual poker face.
"Hehehe," She giggled. Obviously, she hasn't moved on by his reaction earlier.
"I'll be busy so I won't be seeing you in a while." Pulling his arm that she was clinging on, Matthew Xi turned to face her.
One of the many reasons — aside from Zion Kwan not selling him out was because Matthew Xi's schedule was bound to be tighter than ever. Since he had missed a lot of work when he was recovering, Matthew Xi had to make up for the days he was missing in action.
Therefore, to guarantee that he could go on their first date, Matthew Xi had to finish everything before the 19th. That was seven days from now.
If Matthew Xi didn't have extra-curricular activities and worked with his usual pace, he would have probably finished half of the work by now. However, tons of things happened, and he had been accompanying Zoey. Hence these consequences.
"Where are you working, anyway? Why don't you quit and work for me instead?" Giving him a knowing look, Zoey moved her brows in an up and down motion. She was kidding, and Matthew Xi figured that much.
"I'm not working here." Harsh and blunt, Matthew Xi answered tonelessly. Not that he had his own business to lead. It was because of this weird office.
Matthew Xi couldn't see himself working with her employees — her weird employees plus a troublesome employer. Just thinking about it, Matthew Xi could see his foreboding fate as Zoey harass him with every opportunity. It gave him a bit of goosebumps. He had never felt so grateful being born as Matthew Xi until today.
"Hehe, I don't mean by that." Stretching her lips up, a mischievous glint flashed across her eyes. "I mean work as my sugar baby~"
Upon hearing her last remarks, Matthew Xi's little emotion faded 'permanently'. So, that's what she wanted: him being a sugar baby. That's worse than being a regular employee.
"Stop being ridiculous." He said, raising his forefinger and gently pushed her forehead by it.
"Hehe. I'm just suggesting — I mean, we can always be together." Zoey said in a matter-of-fact tone. If he was in a desperate situation, he would bite of course. But he wasn't.
Also, there was this called pride. Hence, how could he stoop so low to be her sugar baby? Did she think he's that desperate?
"Thanks for the meal. I'm going." Yet, Matthew Xi kept his thoughts on him. Glancing at Paul Qian's car, he pondered about something.
"Sending you off gives me separation anxiety." Frowning, Zoey heaved a deep sigh. Maybe she was being clingy, but she does feel sad every time he goes.
Regardless of how each encounter turned out, Zoey often felt this strange void in her heart. Perhaps she was just getting older. Hence, the emotional circus.
"I work in the Xi Corporation." Out of nowhere, Matthew Xi answered the nearly forgotten question.
"Ah?" For a second, Zoey stared at him in surprised. Well, his name was the same as the owner of the company he worked for. Hence, it would be more shocking if Zoey wasn't surprised.
Matthew Xi only stared at her in silence as she absorbed this new information. This was probably the first time she asked something about himself. Hence, he answered; although it might give her some hint.
"Oh, my god..." As soon as she collected her thoughts, Zoey gasped as she stared at him from head to toe. "You work for that fat shorty that looks like a mini gas tank?" She asked, looking at him with pity.
Just as he thought Zoey would ask him about something else — something more important than that — he thought wrong. Rendering him speechless. She still believed that the Matthew Xi she had glimpsed upon was him. By the way, who was that fat shorty that snatched his identity?
"My poor Browny," Zoey frowned, displaying sorry for him. It wasn't that she had a grudge for average-looking people. It was because in that kind of environment, the pressure for the employees and everyone was much more pressing.
Not to mention, Matthew Xi had the same name as the CEO. Thus, one could imagine how Matthew Xi's life having the 'same name' as Matthew Xi.
(That was confusing.)
"See you on the 19th." Shaking his head, Matthew Xi called it a day. He didn't clear the misunderstanding and dropped it like he always does. He then pressed the unlock button on the car key and walked over to the side, heading to the driver's seat.
"Tell me if you change your mind and wanted to quit, okay?" Looking at him over the car's hood, Zoey reminded with a smile.. She only sees him sigh and nod before hitching inside the driver's seat.
