"You're drinking too much." He stopped her from chugging down another glass of wine tactlessly.
"It's fine. This won't make me drunk." In a matter-of-fact tone, Zoey rolled her eyes as she shrugged her shoulders. "Why don't you drink and loosen up a bit, Browny? This wine is so good and expensive we get to take advantage of those people, you know." She suggested, perking her chin to the untouched wine in his hand.
"I can't." Matthew Xi shook her head sideways lightly. "Who will drive you home if I did?" He added with a sigh.
Well, it was true! Besides the unappetizing foods that were served that night, the wines and champagne weren't bad. He could bear with it and take a few glasses if he needed to.
However, they were supposed to go home tonight. Therefore, Matthew Xi shrugged off the idea of enjoying a couple of drinks with her.
"I will." Loud and proud, Zoey cockily exclaimed. "Don't forget, I drove you to the funeral parlor and hospital while under the influence of alcohol — I drank a lot that night, you won't even believe it." She added, reminding him of their first meeting.
"And I don't intend to experience it while sober." Frowning, Matthew Xi sighed helplessly. He was lucky that he survived that night.
However, he was afraid they would run out of luck if they tested fate multiple times. Hence, Matthew Xi wouldn't let that happen again. He already witnessed her reckless driving — never again.
"Jeez. You're so hard to persuade. I'm losing my hope of taking advantage of the vulnerable beauty." Zoey murmured, glancing at his stoic mien with a pout.
"Huh?" Knitting his brows, Matthew Xi wondered what she was murmuring about. If only he knew Zoey was trying to get him drunk, he would literally drag her to the temple to cleanse her immoral thoughts.
"Nothing." Shaking her head, Zoey shrugged him off as she glanced at the figures approaching them.
"We're enjoying the party, if that's what you will ask." As soon as Ezekiel Tang and friends were within her vicinity, Zoey instantly greeted and answered the usual questions.
"Haha! I'm glad to hear that." Ezekiel Tang chuckled, shaking his head at Zoey's sarcastic greetings. "Well, I want to introduce Mr. Xi to a few of my associates." Ezekiel Tang didn't beat around the bush as he jumped straight to the point.
The only familiar person to Ezekiel Tang was Richard Sun. They smiled, nodding their heads as they glanced at Matthew Xi's aloof front.
"We heard good things from Mr. Tang about Mr. Xi. Although it was quite the coincidence that he has the same name as CEO Xi, well, it's not like it doesn't happen." A middle-aged man stated with a smile.
"And he also works in the Xi Corporation. Thinking he made it to one of the giants, he must be a remarkable person!"
"Of course! Not just anyone can be accepted in the Xi Corporation! Each employee is screened strictly and their salary is even par with a manager's position in some small companies!" Richard Sun exclaimed as he chimed in cheerfully, highlighting Matthew Xi's capabilities.
God knows how much Richard Sun wanted to go home so that he wouldn't be dragged along with this nuisance anymore. However, thinking that the Tangs would pick on Matthew Xi, Richard Sun couldn't go home just yet.
If only he could beg Zoey to take her man away, he would have groveled in her feet. But he can't. After all, she had not recognized Matthew Xi's real identity!
The nerve of this cunning woman to be so clueless in the most crucial time! Hence, Richard Sun could only weep inwardly as he carried humanity's peace and order on his shoulders alone.
"This is the reason I wanted to introduce Mr. Xi to these gentlemen. Having such capabilities and potential, he would surely grow if he is willing to risk it." Nodding in agreement, Ezekiel Tang turned to Matthew Xi's unchanging visage as he vaguely explained.
Despite his indirect statement, everyone could understand his intentions. From a third party's perspective, they would perceive Ezekiel Tang's words as a benevolent offer.
Being introduced and recognized by these important figures, it would be an honor. After all, even if Matthew Xi worked under the Xi Corporation, the competition in that company was fiercer. Hence, it would take a lot of years and remarkable achievements to be recognized.
That was true. Matthew Xi set the standards in XI Corporation to the highest level because he was paying everyone what they deserved. However, it would take a lot of merits for someone to be promoted.
One of the reasons the Xi Corporation stood at the top. Not only the CEO or the executives, but also everyone from top to bottom worked hard to get acknowledged by their bosses or be respected by their employees.
Even a person without merits in their name could attain a higher position in the Xi Corporation if they worked hard and smart enough. That was the rule in the Xi Corporation.
Therefore, people from the middle-class families were forced not to be complacent because even a poor scholar could be their boss one day. Sad to say, it also became the source of mild discrimination in the company.
Still, Matthew Xi viewed it as a challenge for everyone. For the ones who were discriminated: to use the discrimination as a fuel for motivation. And for those entitled: to not to be surpassed by a nobody.
'Oh, good lord...!' Hearing Ezekiel Tang's offer, Richard Sun felt that someone just squeezed his brain. This was too much — too much for a person's head to take in.
He must be being punished for being such a sinful person. Why was he the person to be trusted by Matthew Xi to know his little secret? He didn't want to know! He hoped he was deaf or just entirely an idiot!
"Mr. Xi, if you're having second thoughts, you can also call me. As a friend of Miss Zhou, I would gladly accept you in our company and even give you a good position." Bearing a magnanimous smile, Ezekiel Tang handed his business card to Matthew Xi.
Zoey glanced at Ezekiel Tang with a poker face. 'How smart to insult my darling using such methods.' She hissed internally.
Zoey knew that Ezekiel Tang was purposely doing this to open her darling's eyes; for him to see that Ezekiel Tang was not at his level and show the difference in their status.
"Thank you," Matthew Xi nodded, staring at the small card that stated Ezekiel Tang's position as the president of the Tang Enterprise.
As he accepted, Ezekiel Tang scoffed. 'Shameless, indeed..' He thought internally.
