Ezekiel Tang slowly shifted his piercing glare at Richard Sun's composed front. He then glanced around and saw that they'd caught quite a lot of attention again. Hence, he scoffed as he pulled his hand away from Richard Sun.
"Mr. Tang, did you just think of assaulting me?" Despite her surprise at Richard Sun's interference, Zoey didn't feel like ending things smoothly.
Didn't Ezekiel Tang say that he doesn't care about his image anymore? Then, wasn't this the time he should show his resolve? Not that Zoey would return to him or accept him with open arms, though.
She just couldn't let things go because they're being too much. She tried. Zoey tried her best to behave, but she couldn't. They just wouldn't give her and her darling some peace. Perhaps they wanted Zoey to go 'extreme'.
"You...!"
"Zoey..." Sensing that Zoey wouldn't stop, Matthew Xi called in a low tone. "Stop." He added, stroking her hair as if petting an angry cat.
"But... darling..." Upon hearing her darling's voice, Zoey slightly calmed down as she frowned. Looking up at him, a heavy sigh escaped her lips as she pursed her lips and nodded her head like an apprehended child.
"Miss Zhou, let me clear your misinterpretation. We didn't intend to insult Mr. Xi or you, Miss Zhou. However, I think you are not being considerate of your date's feelings. After all, it's a shame that a man is being protected by a woman." Ezekiel Tang cleared his throat, setting his eyes on Zoey as he coldly emphasized his words.
It displeased him more that she was listening to Matthew Xi. She's listening to this nobody that only knows how to ride on her coattails.
"I hope you enjoy the rest of the night. I'll overlook this matter, but keep in mind this is my party." He added, peering at Zoey for several seconds and then to Matthew Xi before retracting it. "Gentlemen, why don't we join my mother?" He proposed to his displeased colleagues at how the conversation turned out.
With that offer, the group of annoying thugs in fancy suits finally left. Zoey glanced at Richard Sun who also glanced back at her.
"You're impossible." Richard Sun scorned, as he followed the circle of businessmen.
Meanwhile, Zoey watched the group depart from their standpoint. She could not help but tighten her jaw, watching how Ezekiel Tang was pushing her to her limits.
'Huh! Be grateful I came with a date! Did they think I don't have any ammo to fire back?' Zoey mocked internally.
Since Zoey had a habit of collecting knowledge, her favorites were those juicy gossips about those public figures. She lived in a cruel word, thus she needed assurance to survive.
How do they think Zoey reached where she was without knowing bits of everyone? With that sharp tongue of hers, Zoey tends to offend quite a few people. And yet, she managed to save herself because she has tons of tricks up her sleeves.
"Why?" Just as Zoey wordlessly stared at the departing group of men, Matthew Xi opened his mouth and inquired.
Snapping out of her wicked thoughts, Zoey turned her attention to him with her brows raised. "Hmm?"
"You know you'll be in trouble if they take your word as an offense. Why would you do that?" Unlike his usual self, Matthew Xi spouted more words when talking to Zoey.
However, it intrigued him why she did what she did. It couldn't possibly be because of him, right? Why would she risk such a thing only to bring about trouble?
Moreover, Matthew Xi was certain it was obvious that he was unaffected. Therefore, there was no reason for her to be petty and confront them.
Unless, Zoey had hidden grudges towards the men. What Matthew Xi didn't know was the means to protect someone. After all, everyone that he held dear already carried the Xi surname. Hence, no one dared to offend or even disappoint them.
Zoey stared at him, studying his curious expression before a sigh slipped from her lips. "Browny, sometimes I don't know if you're pretending to be clueless or you're just really clueless." She shook her head sideways, causing his brows to knit.
"What do you mean?"
"I did it because they're belittling you. How can I let that happen under my watch?" Zoey rolled her eyes as he seemed totally clueless. She almost couldn't believe it.
Was he a robot? Didn't he feel offended or anything that incited emotions within him? Ezekiel Tang's words were obvious, didn't he notice that?
"Also, didn't you say my business is your business? Same goes with me. Anything that concerns you is also my burden to carry." In a matter-of-fact tone, Zoey reminded him of the words he spouted earlier.
That instant, Matthew Xi's heart felt moved. Although he didn't feel a need to be protected by petty show offs, it felt... nice. It felt nice being shielded despite the consequences.
Moreover, apart from the fact that their roles seemed to be in quite the confusion, with Zoey acting as the male lead while he was the damsel in distress, Matthew Xi somehow felt it wasn't important. What was important was knowing more about Zoey and her genuinely sincere heart.
Having this pleasant atmosphere around them, Matthew Xi had the urge to pat her head and thank her sincerity. However, even before he could take action, Zoey opened her mouth and shattered the dreamy air enveloping them.
"So, let's just get married. Aren't I the perfect wifey?" Slowly, Zoey's lips turned into a smug grin as she chuckled proudly.
'She really knows to build and kill the mood almost instantly.' Chuckling inside, Matthew Xi shook his head as he exhaled helplessly.
He then mindlessly downed the glass of wine that he had been holding onto the whole time.
"Woah! Did you just..." Blinking her eyes many times, Zoey altered her gaze from Matthew Xi to the empty glass of wine.
Drinking such wine tactlessly wasn't his preferred way of enjoying wine. However, he felt like imitating her and followed her advice by loosening up.
As the acid traveled down his throat, a satisfied smile formed on his lips. "Let's just take advantage of their money." He said, shrugging his shoulders, and repeated Zoey's remarks from earlier.
"Oh Lord, did you heed my requests and let a ghost possess my darling?" In disbelief of what unfolded before her eyes, Zoey murmured as her prayers were slowly coming true.
