As one of the streets in the city began filling with luxury cars and people wearing flashy attires, Rem approached Zoey who was watching the cars find their respective space in the empty lot.
"Hey Jo, some of my pals are disagreeing to bet on you." Rem sighed, shrugging his shoulders nonchalantly as he couldn't blame his friends on doubting Zoey.
After all, she was up against Kenneth Bai. Kenneth Bai- a professional racing driver who had competed in several competitions representing the country at a young age. Although the man hadn't been racing recently —due to personal matters —he was still acknowledged as one of the best.
Rem had to give that recognition to the man. He respected Kenneth Bai despite the fact that Rem was a few years older than him.
Therefore, who in the right mind would risk betting on Zoey? Even Rem was skeptical about his decision to support her.
"Mhmm," Zoey hummed a faint tune, nodding her head that was a little heavier with her helmet on.
"Hey, Jo, are you sure you'll win? I placed all my bets on you — I'll kill you." Rem glanced at the mysterious and weird Zoey whose face he had never seen before. Still, he acted close because he liked her as she appeared to be pretty cool.
"I have to." Zoey just gave him a side eye which he didn't notice because of her helmet's visor.
"You have to?!" Rem gasped in disbelief, although her tone was determined, determination alone wasn't enough to win this race! "Oy, you got to be sure — my d*mn money is on your shoulders!" He stood in front of Zoey, widening his eyes as he already placed his stakes and he couldn't change his mind now.
Even if those socialites didn't care about losing their bets, Rem did! After all, that's all he has! What would he eat if Zoey lost? He used his small savings because if his stakes won, his money would return five folds!
However, Zoey didn't say anything anymore as her gaze was fixated on the black car arriving from the front. The black car might pale in comparison among the flashy sports cars around, but Zoey had felt the same vibe from Matthew Xi's cars from her previous life.
Matthew Xi's cars might look simple without the slightest dent in sight. Aside from that, the car's engine was changed to satisfy the comfort of Matthew Xi's.
Zoey couldn't hear the slightest noise from the car despite how different sounds of cars filled the air. It was weird, but each sound source was clear to Zoey and she couldn't hear any from that car.
'Why is he here?' Zoey wondered internally, figuring out who the person was inside that black car.
"Hey, Joey!" Rem snapped his fingers in front of her since she was ignoring him while his anxiety built up.
"Don't worry. If I lose, you still will earn a few thousand for your services." Zoey didn't even glance at him as she responded. She shifted her gaze to Kenneth Bai who was checking out his lavish motorbike while Zoey didn't even bother checking her motorcycle's engine.
"What?! But that's nothing compared to my stakes tonight!" Aghast, Rem exclaimed as he sandwiched his temple by his palm in distress.
"Stop acting like you never lost a bet before. Anyway, tell me when to start, I'm ready anytime." Zoey just shrugged her shoulders, retracting her bottom away from her motorcycle as she turned her back against Rem.
Zoey then started her ride's engine, warming it up and checking if the engine's sound was good to go. Since she often did a regular check up on her baby, Zoey didn't have to go through complicated check ups like Kenneth Bai.
"Jeez! My pal is briefing your opponent about the route. You already saw the map." Rem clicked his tongue in annoyance, gritting his teeth as he tried to see the brighter side of the consequences. Alas, no matter how hard he shrugged his anxiety off, he couldn't!
After checking the engine and feeling satisfied with it, Zoey slowly turned around and faced Rem. "Don't interfere." Her tone bore threats, as if she had seen the foreseeable future.
"Whatever happens, don't interfere just because you're afraid of losing your money." Although Rem couldn't see her eyes, her tone unconsciously made him gulp as he didn't expect that she would have guessed his resolution.
"No foul plays or else..." Zoey's eyes sharpened, peering Rem's widened eyes without blinking. "Not only will you lose your money, I will take everything from you." Zoey's voice didn't even falter as she dropped her threats.
She was dead serious about this race. Although she needed the car as the prize, Zoey also had another purpose for this race.
From her previous life, she knew about Kenneth Bai's previous profession late as he had retired one year from the current lifetime. The reason? Zoey didn't know. But what she was certain was that even after years, he was still fond of racing.
"Chill, man..." Rem clicked his tongue, scoffing as he tried to conceal that she had seen through him. "No foul play — Do you want me dead if the Bai's come to know that I sabotaged their young master?!" He added in a matter-of-fact tone, rolling his eyes before he stomped his feet away.
Zoey watched him retreat, before she sensed someone gazing at her intently. Turning her head towards Kenneth Bai's direction, she saw him looking at her and smirked cockily.
However, Zoey ignored his arrogance as she moved her eyes towards another person in that same direction. There, Matthew Xi stood with Lucas Xi, Enzo Li, and Paul Qian with him.
There were a few young beauties fawning around them, but it was evident they were not careless enough to come close to Matthew Xi. After all, there was this thick invisible barrier that shielded Matthew Xi from others.
Hence, even though they didn't know who he was, even commoners would feel this strong repelling presence around him. As if one wrong move, they'll be doomed.
"*sigh* He's so handsome, I want to kiss him..." Zoey muttered, sighing heavily as she shook her head. The more he followed her, the more she could feel how stupid she was for not prioritizing him first.
After ten minutes, both Zoey and Kenneth Bai had received a memo that the race would start in five minutes.. Therefore, both of them prepared and drove their rides to the starting point of the race.
