Meanwhile, Zoey glanced at Paul who was standing wordlessly on the other side of the lift. "Hey," She called out meekly, catching his attention.
"Yes, Miss Zhou?" Slowly, Paul turned to her bearing a questioning look. "Do you need something?" He asked automatically.
Zoey frowned, casting him a disdainful look which immediately vanished the second it resurfaced on her face. "What's wrong with your boss?" She asked, clearing her throat as she thought of interviewing him during this brief elevator ride.
Well, she didn't want to go without a clue of why Matthew suddenly acted like that. The perfect person but also the hardest to extract information was with her. Zoey, although didn't have high expectations that Paul would tell her a word, still had hope she could get a hint just by talking to him.
"Nothing, Miss Zhou." Without asking anything, Paul simply ended any queries she may ask regarding his boss.
'Geez…' Zoey clicked her tongue, shooting him a look of dismay. "I mean, is he sick?" Zoey asked, purposely dropping the keyword sick as Paul was a worrywart -- if he truly was during this lifetime.
Although Paul was the most trusted man Matthew has, sometimes, her darling still hid secrets from him. One of the most perfect examples was Matthew's health. Thus, Zoey purposely blurted out the subject while sounding innocent.
As expected, Paul's brows slightly furrowed before it relaxed. "I believe the Young Master is not ill and is in a healthy shape." In a matter-of-fact tone, Paul reassured without breaking his gaze away from her.
"Are you sure? Then, why did he send me away after he had a headache?" Zoey rubbed her chin lightly, sneaking glances at him to see him frown and furrowed his brows.
"Headache?" He asked, recalling the times that Matthew had been complaining about his weird dreams. Not to mention, his boss often mentioned he was having headaches. Paul even insisted to get him checked one time but Matthew told him it was nothing serious.
Thus, he didn't question Zoey's claims because Matthew had often been complaining about his headaches. "Yes!" was the answer she gave him.
"I see…' Still, Paul didn't act on impulse and just nodded his head ever so slowly.
'Damn it! What a tight lipped man!' Zoey grumbled internally, frustrated at how she had underestimated Paul. Well, Zoey got used to him telling her almost everything as she was Matthew's wife and her husband didn't plan on hiding things from her.
But, if she considered the time before marrying Matthew in their previous life, Zoey wasn't surprised. After all, Paul never mentioned his job and the XI Corporation. It was as if once he left the building, he would leave the baggage of classified information as well.
"I'm worried. I think we should go back." Zoey proposed, not having enough choices and resorted in returning just because she had more chances of getting what she wanted. Also, she could just tell Matthew that she's hungry and they should continue the date.
After all, Zoey was indeed worried. She's his wife, technically. Thus, she couldn't just leave her husband after seeing him snap. Zoey knew she was giving herself more trouble in the future. However, just like the phrase she often said, let tomorrow worry about itself.
"My apologies, Miss Zhou, but we can't." Without batting an eye, Paul refused politely. "Young Master ordered to escort you out safely." He added, reminding her of the big boss's orders.
"But --"
"I'll get in trouble. Miss Zhou." Before she could argue with him, Paul interrupted her. "As much as you're worried, I am as well. However, Young Master's orders are my top priority at the moment. Someone will check on him if something unprecedented happened." Paul explained, hoping for her to understand his situation.
Although Paul didn't have any high hopes that she would care, he still hoped that she's not stupid and selfish enough to only think about herself. Well, she has no choice, right? Even if she wanted to go back, she couldn't do anything.
Or so he thought.
Zoey pursed her lips in a thin line, studying his front before she clicked her tongue. Slowly, she took a step back, leaning her side against the wall of the lift.
Paul nodded approvingly, pleased that she understood human language and didn't try to argue. Thus, Paul faced the closed doors of the lift, looking up to see that they were near the ground floor.
Soon, the elevator rang and then it slowly opened. Without a word, Paul stepped out of the lift. When he was outside the elevator, he turned to see that Zoey was still inside. "Miss Zhou, we're here." He said.
"Yes, wait…" Zoey nodded her head, taking one slow step forward. However, the next second, instead of going out of the lift, Zoey repeatedly pressed the close button.
Her action, of course, surprised Paul. Hence, as the door started to close in, Paul rushed in. Alas, before he could enter, Zoey extended her arms to the sidewalls -- both sides --and then kicked him on the chest to push him out.
"Laters, assistant Qian~!" Zoey waved her fingers, beaming him a sweet smile until the doors shut closed. "Phew!" Zoey heaved a sigh, surprised at herself that she ended up doing something very naughty again.
"My darling will surely get mad… or not. Hehe!" Yet, Zoey could still giggle at the thought of Matthew's surprised face seeing her back alone. "I can't wait to boast in front of him! Jeez, girl… you plan and sabotage your own plans yourself! I'm so proud of you!" Zoey clapped her hands sarcastically, staring at her reflection from the mirror inside.
"Well, I already did it. No regrets." The side of her lips stretched into a forced smile, then nodded her head as an unwavering resolve glinted her eyes.
Meanwhile, Paul who was kicked out of the building stared at the closed lift in disbelief. One second later, he snapped and immediately reached for the people that could come inside the CEO's office.
Paul knew that Matthew wouldn't possibly get hurt by her if she bore ill-intention. However, just in case that she got lucky. He couldn't be too complacent.
"Someone is going to see Young Master. See if everything is fine. If you sense danger, apprehend her." As soon as the line connected, Paul instructed before he hung up.
Looking from left to right, he contemplated whether to take another route. However, even if he started sprinting now, Paul was certain the elevator had already returned even before Paul could reach the looby. Therefore, he decided to wait as he paced back and forth.
'That woman… how can I fall for her tricks?' Anxious, Paul growled internally, constantly glancing at the elevator while pacing back and forth.
