Zoey could feel her entire body shudder uncontrollably. It was not because she was scared and this was her first time; it was not. The reason her body was reacting like this was because she couldn't recognize Matthew.
Her pure-hearted and loving husband who seemed he could never harm someone physically just let his cat eat a person! The reason? Because they planned to violate Zoey and torment her until nothing was left for her.
Still, Zoey also knew deep down that Matthew needed to show his power. If he let this one slide, then, others would think they could abuse him. He needed to remind them who was in power, and what those traitors' destiny would be if they betrayed him.
"Gosh…" Under her breath, Zoey muttered. Her chest moved heavily and slowly, as if she had run a marathon the way she breathed. "This couldn't be real…" She added, however, the audible growl along with a man screaming in the background slapped her denial stages.
'Am I in a different world and did not time travel? This doesn't add up!' Zoey, once again, questioned the unbelievable phenomena that occurred to her. She had been questioning this with Matthew's actions in this lifetime.
However, only Matthew was different. The rest, her friends, her employees, and even the events that she expected to occur happened the same way they happened in her previous life. Therefore, Zoey couldn't really believe that she traveled to a different world where everything seemed to be the same.
After all, Matthew and the people surrounding him were different. As Zoey racked her brains, something in her mind rang.
'General Bai!' She exclaimed internally, recalling the stories she had heard about that person in her previous life.
In her previous lifetime, General Bai was an honorable figure. He was respected in all areas and was honored the highest respect the country could offer to an individual. In other words, he was like the modern hero like those historical heroes in their country.
However, Zoey recalled the time she was talking to the older version of Kenneth. He had mentioned something along the lines regarding his deceased father. She remembered telling him how admirable his father was, and Kenneth just stayed silent and smiled in a strange manner.
It was really strange as it had a touch of mockery in it. 'This is the reason?' Zoey wondered internally, putting the pieces together that his father wasn't what the media showed to the masses.
He wasn't as clean and righteous as he was. Because behind closed doors, he didn't have the power before Matthew. Maybe, the awards and achievements weren't all real?
'How about his death? Was it really due to natural death?' While her mind was at it, Zoey couldn't help but question the General's untimely death. 'From this date, General Bai will die due to heart attack after one year or around that time of the year.' Zoey didn't realize that she was too busy putting pieces together that she didn't notice the incoming footsteps upstairs.
'Matty didn't feed him to his cat, right? If he did, he wouldn't be friends with Ken. But, Ken wasn't that close to his father; they're more likely strangers so…' Just as Zoey tried to conclude at some certain point as she got hooked at General's death, she jolted upon hearing Matthew's voice.
"You're awake?" As usual, Matthew's tone was cold and unwavering.
"Ah!" As Zoey jolted, she bumped into the vase that was nearby. It nearly crashed to the marbled floor. Fortunately, she caught it.
She hugged it, feeling her heart race faster than ever. "I -- " She stuttered. Zoey tried to sound natural, but her words just clogged in her throat that caused her to stutter.
Matthew remained silent. There was a touch of displeasure that flickered in his eyes seeing her terrified and panic-stricken reaction. "You saw everything?" He asked, looking over the railing as and took a glimpse of the gruesome scene that didn't even make him bat an eye.
"Uh…" Instinctively, Zoey took a step back while holding the vase. "Ye -- yess…"She bit her lower lip, wanting to curse at herself as she sounded as if she was terrified. She was shocked, alright?
Zoey had seen too many deaths that this shouldn't ignite fear in her. Still, she was shocked that Matthew was capable of doing this. This was just something her body and mind couldn't take without any prior notice.
"Are you afraid?" Slowly, Matthew averted his gaze from the first floor towards her. His naturally long eyelashes fluttered ever so slowly while his voice hit a low tone.
"N -- no." Zoey shook her head profusely, since she could only express her emotion and convince him by this action.
Matthew studied her front, arching his right brow as he would somehow understand her if she was. As if anything would change -- her attitude and views towards him, perhaps. Still, not that she could escape from him if what she witnessed had changed her mind.
He then trudged forward, noticing her other foot taking a step back. However, that was the only move she took as if she stopped herself from doing a complete step back.
When he reached her, two steps away from where she was standing, Matthew brushed her shoulder by the back of his fingers. "Are you sure?" He asked, raising his pair of russet eyes to her.
Zoey pursed her lips into a thin line, nodding her head as an answer. "Good." Matthew nodded his head, pleased at the answer he received.
"Why are you here, then?" Since they dropped the topic, Matthew asked the reason she was outside that made her overhear everything and witnessed something she shouldn't.
"I -- I'm hungry." She swallowed a mouthful of saliva, trying to clear her throat so she could verbally respond. His eyes glinted in amusement, not expecting to hear such a response.
Matthew expected that she would use a different excuse. Who would say they were hungry after witnessing all that? Even if she was, her appetite should go away, right?
"Let's eat?" Just then, Zoey held the vase with her arms as her hands clung onto his suit like she was a kid. The side of her lips curled into a meek smile while her eyes shot straight to his eyes.
With just that little gesture, Zoey felt the lingering danger surrounding him vanish into thin air. 'Safe!' She exclaimed internally, sensing that Matthew's mood totally changed.
Gentle, Matthew nodded his head slowly.. "Sure."
