Chapter 42 - Don't Die On Me, Breathe.

"I'm scared!" Devon's entire body shook from fear, tightening her grip around his body.

The life in his eyes slowly faded away as Lewis stabilized his breathing. "Do you want to get embrace now to comfort you?"

"I'm scared!" Her reply was a mere exclaim as she shook his body while taking slight jumps.

'Really… can't she tell you're topless?' His subconscious mind commented sarcastically, making him sigh as he placed his hands on her shoulders.

"Wait," He said, pushing her a little while Devon reluctantly let go. "You run here because you think a ghost haunts this place?"

His eyes searched for her eyes as she nodded as an answer. Lewis let out another sigh as he hung his head low briefly before raising it back again.

"You're scared of ghosts and not of the living?" He asked sarcastically, cocking his head a little to the side. "What do you think you're doing hugging a half-naked man? Do the consequences don't scare you?"

If Lewis was a wicked male lead in heat, one could predict what would happen next. But that would be beyond his morals, no matter how attracted he was to her.

Devon pursed her lips as she moved her eyes to his delectable collarbones, down to his firm chest, and then to his abs. Her jaw slowly fell as her mind short-circuited.

Although pleased at her reaction, Lewis shook her shoulders lightly. "Don't die on me, breathe," he said, but Devon was akin to an inflatable air puppet.

"Hey, breathe!" Lewis started to panic as he shook her rapidly until she snapped back to her senses. "What the hell?" he gasped in disbelief, as he never thought his body would be lethal!

"My, my friend," Devon hiccuped as she flushed in embarrassment and fear. If she could dig a hole, she would have done it to hide right now, but her feet felt as though they were nailed to the floor.

"Goodness," Lewis murmured in distress as he scratched his temple. "I'll put a shirt on and find that ghost for you."

AS promised, Lewis quickly put a shirt on and escorted her back to the living area. Devon kept close to him, holding the hem of his shirt while hiding from behind him.

"Where did you see the ghost?" He asked as he cocked his head back. She pointed her hand towards her room, making him sigh before he said, "Let's check it."

"I'm scared," she muttered, pulling his shirt back while gazing at him pitifully.

"Will you be scared of your own room or the place you stay at forever?" He frowned as he slowly faced her. "I will just check since we need you to calm down." And to make her calm down, he had to prove there's nothing wrong in this place.

"But the television suddenly shut off, and I saw a reflection!" Devon exclaimed as the sense of dread crawled up to her spine just recalling what happened.

"Television?"

"The one inside that room!"

Lewis furrowed his brows before he realized she was talking about her laptop. 'Did she turn on the laptop without charging it?' He wondered internally, shaking his head, as it didn't matter.

After all, being alone in a dark place like her room does silly things to a human mind.

"I will just check, alright?" Lewis looked at her straight in the eye. "You can just stay by the door."

The expression on his face made her feel reassured, but now it worried her. She seized his hand before mumbling, "I'll come with you, then."

"Sure." Lewis glanced at their hand and slipped his fingers in between her fingers. "Just stay close."

And so the two of them approached Devon's room. Lewis pushed the door open wide as he looked around, since the lights were already opened.

"Let's go," He said as he glanced at her who was squeezing herself in his back, but he ignored it.

Devon cautiously looked around, squeezing his hand tightly until they reached the desk. While she looked around, Lewis pressed the switch on the laptop just to see its low battery.

"It's just low battery." Devon gazed up at him when he spoke. "And you can see your reflection since it's turned off." He added as he slowly sat down, pointing at the monitor of the laptop.

She peeked at his reflection and there's no more additional reflection on it. 'Did I just imagine it?' she wondered internally, calming down as she pondered about it.

'Since this is Miss Lin's room, did I imagine that out of guilt for stealing her life?' She muttered internally, frowning at the thought.

"It's alright." She diverted her attention back to him upon hearing his reassurance. "Don't worry, I will call for an ordained minister to conduct a house blessing."

Devon bit her lower lip, moved by his kindness as she nodded. "Will you?"

"Mhm," He hummed, nodding his head. "Don't think about it for now since I'm here, alright?"

"Alright," she murmured, and then Lewis charged her laptop before they went out of the room.

Unbeknownst to them, the real Devon who was watching the two of them while laying on her bed couldn't conceal her dismay.

"The heck am I watching?" Her nose scrunched up, cringing at the sight of her face looking overly cute.

"I never thought Mister Qin and I will have some strange chemistry." Her voice sounded with genuine amusement. "Should I scare her more?"

She wondered before floating back to her feet. "No, is what my subconscious mind said, but it makes me even more determined."

A smug grin immediately appeared on her face. "I wonder if I scare her a little, will she insist on staying inside the shower with him?" she giggled evilly, imagining the distress Lewis would experience.

"Well, well, well, let's find out in the next episode, my dear readers!" She exclaimed happily, somersaulting her way through the wall (perks of being a spirit).

Meanwhile, in Secret Garden Bar and Lounge…

"Ugh! That Devon!" Kween seethed as she downed another glass. "She's uselessly kind! First, she sacrificed her sleep, and now, her life! I hate her!"

"Don't say that," Marl chimed as he served her another drink. "You don't really hate her, do you? She just reminds her of you."

Kween frowned as she shot him a disappointed look. "You mean we're both kind?"

"Haha, no." Marl shook his head as he chuckled.. "You're both busybodies."
