Chapter 48 - Then, Do You Want To Be Lucky?

[ Entry: May 7, 2020 — Night (11:31 PM) Thursday

What are little shits? My fucking pigs of a sibling.

What is crap? Their pathetic, insignificant lives.

If I'm going to be a convict, my offense will be murder.

I won't settle for less!

I swear if I see those little sh*ts again, that's it!

I'll end them. Bury them alive.

No mercy… ]

Devon pursed her lips as her mind short-circuited on reading the entry before the first one she read. It was actually a long rant with murder detail of how the old Devon would murder her siblings, but Devon couldn't read it longer.

"That's… extreme." Lewis was just as equally mortified as Devon as he read it whole. "I didn't know you hate them that much."

Since Devon asked her for a favor to teach her how to operate the laptop, he had the privilege to read the notes she was reading. Now that reading her writings before the incident, Lewis couldn't help but wonder if they were the same person.

"That." Devon turned to him with her face flushed with embarrassment. "That's not me!"

He only glanced at her and reluctantly nodded. "If you say so."

Of course, he knew better than anyone, that's how the real Devon was! It wouldn't even surprise Lewis if Devon would be convicted after murdering someone.

Not that he was thinking she was capable of doing so. It was just that, that's how she was.

If Devon broke the law, she wouldn't settle for a minor crime. She's surely do something big. It was not something to be admired or be proud of, but that's just the old Devon's personality.

"Let's read more. Maybe there's a gentle side of my old self," Devon suggested awkwardly, as her fear towards the Spirit was slowly creeping up to her spine.

She was sure the Spirit had some soft spots. That's why she wanted to read her notes to make sure the old Devon was not that scary.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SECHOU~! Thank you for being there whenever I needed you. If not for you, I don't think I can keep being a person with morals. If you're an actual person, I might like humans. But you're not. *sigh* I'm crying… why am I not an anime character? Why am I not born into a world full of adventures and interesting people?

I hate my life — oh, sorry. I know it should be a birthday greeting to you, Senchou. I'm born in the wrong world, really.

Anyway, because it's your birthday, I will re-watch one piece for the nth time. That's it! I've decided.

Your forever Nakama,

Devil-chwaaaan~ ]

"..."

Devon and Lewis were shocked into silence, as both entries were only two days apart. But the difference in the mood was the complete opposite.

"That…" Devon gazed down. Her expression mortified, as these notes were now 'hers' since she was now Devon Lin.

"It's not you, right?" Lewis finished what she couldn't finish. He stared at her for a moment and chuckled helplessly.

Devon frowned as she faced him squarely. "I'm not like this anymore."

"Mhm," He hummed, nodding as he raised his hand and placed it on her head. "You've changed… for the better."

That was also his wish, that she would remain the same just as now. The only thing that he feared the most was that she'd be back on being cold once she retrieved her memories.

"I will read more. Are you not going to sleep?" Devon asked, letting him stroke her head gently.

"Well, you know my circumstances, but it's alright." Lewis leaned back, dropping his arm on the headrest behind her. "Take your time trying to reconnect with your old self."

He picked up his phone, checking some important emails, as he didn't want to put her in an uncomfortable spot anymore. After all, they just read two notes so far, and Devon seemed she wanted to disappear in embarrassment.

"Oh, alright, then." Devon nodded in understanding, staring at his side profile for a while.

Staring at him made her recall the old Devon's question, "Do you like this guy?"

She knew the answer. Lewis was a dear friend to her, so it was obvious she liked and trusted him. But Devon also knew the question was not like that. It was, 'if she liked him as a man'.

'That was quite out of the blue," she murmured internally, as love was not something she wouldn't take lightly.

Love… for her was something not to be taken lightly. Considering her experienced from the people who claimed to love her brought a bit of trauma for her to even think about it.

"Hmm?" Lewis arched his brow as he shifted his eyes towards her after sensing her gaze. "What?"

"Nothing." Devon shook her head lightly, making him face her squarely.

"I don't think, it's nothing like you claim it is."

Devon pursed her lips in a thin line, contemplating how she'd put it. While she thought about it, Lewis spoke.

"I won't know what's in your mind if you don't speak about it. Tell me what's bothering you."

"Uhm, what is your opinion about love, my friend?" Devon asked, deciding to ask him, since she already knew her own answer to that question.

That question caught him off guard, as his mind suddenly went blank. How could she ask such a random question after staring at him?

"Love…" He trailed off as he furrowed his brows. "... I don't know."

"Really? Why?"

"Because I just don't know?" Lewis arched his brow and tilted his head to the side. "Do I look like I'm lying?"

His expression doesn't, but his face told her otherwise. Devon was not blind not to notice that Lewis was a good-looking man. She was certain he'd become popular in her world, as his demeanor, face, and character seemed all regal.

So, it wouldn't be a surprise if there were tons of women who would go to war for his attention.

Her silence made him narrow his eyes as he leaned forward. "What are you thinking?"

"Uhm," Devon slightly drew away as she averted her eyes. Her fingers fiddling with each other.

"I just thought whoever you'd take as a wife will be lucky."

"Oh?" He smirked, cocking his head to the side. "Then, do you want to be lucky?"
