The deep red waterfalls were first discovered by scientists in Antarctica in 1911. They believed it was due to algae tainting the water. Now many years later it has been discovered that it is actually due to rust. The cause is due to a brine (salt water) lake beneath the glacier that has picked up iron from the bedrock. Due to the high pressure, the salty iron water gets pushed out in the form of a waterfall. Due to the large amount of iron rusting upon contact with oxygen, the water then takes on a red hue.

The Blood Falls is almost 20 meters high. The only to to reach this grand sight is via helicopter however Antarctica has an average temperature of negative 20 degrees celcius which is more than just inhabitable.
