“It’s okay, don’t cry, no one would blame you. I know you have Weitian’s best interests at heart. She’s the one who’s not trying. She is not even apologetic!” Ji Mofeng said in a critical tone.
“Mofeng, everyone says it’s hard to be a step-mom. At least you understand me…” Su Sumei cried and threw herself at Mofeng, while still looking in Ji Weitian’s direction.
Ji Weitian had to admit the acting is extraordinary.
Su Sumei didn’t stop at the tears. After she softened up Ji Mofeng, she kept going, “It’s one thing with the Chen family, but our kids’ marriages are important. Weitian is not getting any younger and with a despicable past… If she can’t find a good family to settle down with, how could we as parents live with ourselves? And Suisui, how would people see her, knowing her older sister is like this?”
Seeing Ji Mofeng’s stunned expression, Su Sumei got out of his embrace, wiped off the tears on her cheeks and continued.
“How about this… We have to apologize to the Chens for breaking the engagement, so I’ll go with you! But Weitian’s marriage can’t just be canceled like this. Since there are not many people who know about this, why don’t we throw a party for her? One, we can celebrate how we found the Ji family’s oldest daughter, and two, we can help Weitian meet eligible bachelors in high society. If there’s someone suitable for a match, then we can stop worrying about her future.”
After Su Sumei finished talking, before Ji Mofeng said anything, Ji Kaisui immediately protested.
“Mom, she doesn’t even respect you, why are you being so nice to her…”
“Shut up! What do you know? Even if Weitian wasn’t responsible, she is your older sister. Don’t act up and make your father mad. I don’t care what happens to me as long as your dad is happy.” Su Sumei’s hand clutched Ji Mofeng’s as she declared.
“Mofeng, what do you think of this idea?”
Ji Mofeng seemed moved, “Great, let’s do like you said. You can take care of it.”
“I’ll make it a wonderful event!” Su Sumei seemed overjoyed as she ordered the housekeeper to send out invitations to all the business elite known to the Ji family. She seemed to think of something as she suddenly talked to Ji Weitian in front of Ji Mofeng.
“Weitian, Aunt Mei knows you young people do not like set-up dates. Think of this event as a party. It’s a chance for you to meet new friends. Please don’t feel pressured or inhibited. How about if you stay at home for a few days?”
Su Sumei was acting like a saint, if Ji Weitian refused, she’d look ungrateful and fall into the older woman’s trap.
Ji Weitian squeezed out a smile and answered, “Okay, thanks, Aunt Mei. I have to work, however, so commuting from here isn’t convenient. I’ll be back for the party.”
Su Sumei didn’t miss a beat. “Great, as long as you will come to the party, I’m happy.”
Once the party was decided, Su Sumei couldn’t hold off any longer.
She got up to arrange everything. She even grabbed Ji Kaisui to help her.
Ji Kaisui looked unhappy as she followed her mom. As soon as they left the living room, she grabbed Su Sumei to complain.
“Mom, didn’t you tell me that because Ji Weitian is the oldest daughter of the Ji family, and Dad felt guilty about her, her existence is the biggest threat to me? If you’re not throwing her out, fine, but why are you throwing her a party, announcing that she’s the Ji family’s oldest daughter? Have you lost your mind?”
