Chapter 67: Doubts
"We have a deal, I can train you for a little after work each day and on our days off. Now go back to work, we already wasted enough time."
"Thank you sir, I did end up finding something though. Here take a look"
I took off my backpack then grabbed the relic and handed it to my boss.
I noticed his expression change immediately, his prior upset emotions turned into pure excitement and happiness.
"Diggory you bastard why didn't you just start with this! This relic will sell for a fucking fortune! You know what I think we can call it here for today, we can train for awhile when we get out of here."
I was worried that he was being far too loud. I know he was excited, but there might be an enemy close by.
"Lower your voice we are still in the city, is this picture really worth that much?"
He took his eyes off the picture then looked at me, he seemed to have a dumb founded face.
"Of course Diggory look at it, the beauty and pristine condition it's in. Not only that but the meaning behind the photo is outstanding, this makes the value immeasurable if you have the right buyer."
I didn't know a photo could be worth so much money, if someone from that family wanted to buy the photo then I could see the value being increased.
It felt wrong though, charging money for something that technically didn't even belong to us. If the child in that photo asked to have it back, then I would simply give it to them.
'I guess this is the actual business, I mean we do risk our lives for these things but still. Whatever it's not like I'm one to judge, maybe this is normal here and I'm just overthinking it.'
"Well I guess that's good to know, anyway don't you think we should finish scavenging this building first before we leave?"
"No it would take too much time, we either leave right now or wait until the end of the day. The reason why is because of the sun, when it comes up its much more difficult to leave this place. We either leave now or wait until the end of the day and use the tunnel systems."
"Tunnel systems? I thought climbing the wall was the only way to leave and enter this place. Why don't we use those? It sounds much better than having to climb that damn wall everyday."
I assumed we were only able to use the wall to get in and out of this place. It really looked like that was our only choice, the wall was very dangerous in itself and almost anything sounded better than it.
"You would think that was true, but sadly it isn't. The wall is actually the safest way, the rest are far more dangerous. The tunnels are a terrifying place even for me. The main reasons are monsters make their dens inside of them, navigating them is borderline impossible with how complicated the routes are, and finally how condensed and dark everything is."
I was shocked to hear his explanation, he made it seem like they were a nightmare.
A nightmare I truly didn't want to deal with, if he was scared of that place then I definitely would be as well. It seemed impossible, if my boss struggled in there then I would definitely die.
"Why didn't you ever tell me this before? What would have happened if we stayed yesterday, there's no chance I would have survived in that place."
"If I'm being honest, I would have to say that I really don't know. This is my first time working with someone and I thought it was better not to know. The more you know the more you question everything, this place ruins people's minds including my own. Yes the tunnels are dangerous, but that doesn't mean you would die. I am here with you, I would never throw us into deaths grace."
It was hard to believe, in my eyes it looked like he was trying to throw his life away.
For someone who has a family that they love so much why in the world would they work this job. It felt like he was looking for something that had the highest chance to take his life. Since he was the leader, it meant I was being brought into his wish.
"Why do you work this job sir?" I asked, his answer was what could confirm or deny my suspicions.
He looked down at the ground and seemed to be lost in thought.
This was a personal question, but I needed to ask it to know if all of this was worth it. The reason had to be personal, there had to be a solid reason or else he was only a suicidal maniac in my eyes.
If he truly was that type of maniac, I believed I would have to quit the job. Although there were a lot of benefits, I couldn't use them if I was dead.
While he was contemplating his answer, I felt a sudden discomfort in my body.
I enhanced my entire body and was trying to find the reason for the discomfort. The discomfort was growing rapidly causing me to panic a little. I attempted to send out my mana, but it was getting repelled by the mist making it completely useless.
"There's a problem!" I said quickly hoping I was able to pull my boss out of his thoughts.
My warning was too late as I felt the entire building start shaking violently.
*RUMBLE* *RUMBLE*
I lost my balance and started to feel my weight shift awkwardly making me fall backwards.
I tried to catch my balance but couldn't feel any body part even touching the ground. The panic I had increased drastically, I was hastily looking for anything to grab onto as that was the only thing that came to mind.
While moving my eyes as fast as possible I noticed the ceiling was falling apart, the terrifying part was I couldn't hear anything.
It was dead silent, the building was collapsing yet not a single sound was being produced. My mind was chaotic, millions of thoughts were tossed around in my head.
A few second had gone by and I wasn't able to grab onto anything.
I fell through a hole and was now freefalling through the air. In real time I saw the building collapsing right on top of me, if this path continued I would not only slam into the ground but have the entire building crash on top of me.
My boss wasn't in view leading me to believe he was currently saving himself.
I quickly swung my arms and legs to flip my body, after successfully doing so I looked down to see only pure darkness which was a good thing.
There was still time until I hit the ground, I shot my head up and saw there was another building close by. From the ideas shooting through my head one managed to stick out so I quickly started to execute it.
I lowered my arms and connected both of my wrists together while my palms were faced downwards to the ground.
I started to control the fire element inside my body which made a ball of fire start to form. The mist was heavily suppressing it, I decided to rotate the ball to not only condense the fire but also help fight of the mist's suppression.
I started to lean my body forward and once the ball was big and condensed enough, I started to wrap electricity around it.
The ball exploded which flung my body forward at an incredible speed.
I squinted my eyes and quickly balled up to prepare myself for the upcoming impact. I made sure to keep my eyes opened only a little to still see where I would be ending up.
Shortly after I felt a hard impact against my arms and legs, I had come crashing into the building face first. n(/0VeLb1n
I broke through the wall, but my pace didn't slow down. My body quickly found its way to the second wall and smashed through it as well. I put too much firepower into the blast and was not able to stop myself at all.
I saw another wall coming into view and felt the impact shortly after which hurt way more than the first two.
I quickly realized I didn't go through the wall and was going downwards once again. I quickly cocked my right hand back then swung forward to punch the wall.
I felt my hand break, but I had used enough force to get my full arm through which caused my body to come to abrupt stop.
The quick momentum change caused my right shoulder to dislocate itself, but I was no longer falling.
"EEERRRRHHHHHHHHHHHH" I moaned out since my body was in so much pain, I had heard myself though which meant I could finally be able to hear again.
