Chapter 19 - Being taken care of by a boss (1)
When his team had been destroyed, Lu Xingchi heard a voice in his head that claimed it was a system. Not only did that voice give him a second chance at life, it let him draw a random power. The power he got was control over metal. He could easily change the shape of any metal within a certain size limit and control its movement.
The crossbow was the first thing he had made with his ability. There were limits to his ability, but he could shoot the crossbow with unfailing accuracy.
The system had told him that his power could increase under stimulation and that the only condition for this second chance at life was that he had to follow the same path as his previous life.
Even without the system's requirement, Lu Xingchi would have done that anyways. He would gather up the people from his old team and let them live a good life.
This time, he wouldn't make the same mistake.
Lu Xingchi closed the trunk and glanced at Bei Nuan, who was still wearing a helmet. The round helmet was too big, even the backseat couldn't block his line of sight.
Despite that, he had let her get in the car. She had a special power. Could she be reborn too?
Lu Xingchi didn't think so. When she saw him, she didn't recognize him at all. And, her personality was completely different. When she saw a zombie, she would flee faster than a rabbit and wouldn't waste time saying anything.
She would readily put on a pitiful appearance and looked as if she was about to cry at the drop of a hat. But from morning till now, she had seen so many people turn into zombies without shedding a single tear.
He would take her along for the time being. When they found a safe place, he would leave her there.
After getting back onto the highway, there were obviously few cars on the road. It was because of the blockage in the highway behind them.
The jeep went forward like a horse galloping in the spring sunshine. Lu Xingchi drove faster than before.
Bei Nuan had finished eating and was leaning back in her seat, pretending to doze. In fact, she was organizing the stuff in her pocket space into neat and tidy piles.
She had been too anxious this morning and dumped everything into a messy pile in the pocket space.
The snacks were grouped together, the rice, noodles, vegetables, and fruit were in another group, and the daily necessities were in a third group.
Any weapon that could be used to split open a zombie skull was placed in the most conscious spot in the center.

Ningcheng was an exquisite ancient city with many attractions. It wasn't far from City S, just over an hour by car.
Shortly after getting off the highway, they saw a checkpoint.
The news of a zombie outbreak in City S had reached Ningcheng right away. Ningcheng had sealed off all the main roads into the city, pitched up tents there, and set up temporary checkpoints. The current standard was that anyone with injuries was forbidden to enter the city.
They had no problem passing that requirement.
In front of the checkpoint, there were warning signs, yellow tape tied between the signs, and rows of striped bright yellow cement piers placed across the road. There were also armed men patrolling the area.
Bei Nuan and Lu Xingchi exchanged glances. They had the same thought; could this flimsy barrier be called a line of defense?
That yellow tape might as well be a goal line for the zombies to sprint though. As for the rows of yellow cement piers, they were probably used by the zombies to practice hurdles.
