Chapter 43 - Deserted (2)
All of the doors and windows were reinforced with crisscrossing steel bars. The courtyard walls had also been reinforced with steel plates, making them stronger and taller. The place now looked like a prison or a bunker. It was strong as could be. Unless the zombies learned how to use dynamite, they had no way of entering.
Bei Nuan was dumbstruck. How had Lu Xingchi done this in the time it took Du Ruo to cook a meal? Where did the huge portable generator at his feet come from?
Seeing them come out, Lu Xingchi explained, "There's a construction site not too far from here. I found a lot of building materials."
He turned to Bei Nuan and said, "I've checked it out. There's a well with a hand pump in the yard and a flush toilet in the house. The basic requirements for living won't be a problem here. It'll be difficult for zombies to enter here. In the future, what you have to guard against won't be zombies, but humans."
He shook the metal guard on the window to test out its sturdiness.
"Don't open the door to anyone. Don't believe anyone. Whether the other party is a man or a woman, injured or dying, being chased by zombies, no matter how pitiful they appear, don't just let them in. If you do, you'll be out of luck."
"What do you mean?" Du Ruo interrupted him. He suddenly figured it out. "You're planning on leaving her behind again?"
Lu Xingchi ignored him and continued to say to Bei Nuan, "You don't have enough supplies. We'll go out later to collect more supplies for you and strive to collect enough to last you for a few years."
"What happens after a few years?" Bei Nuan was curious about his plan. "Let me wait for death?"
Bei Nuan thought; he probably thought she couldn't live past a few years by herself, so supplies for a few years would be enough.
Before Lu Xingchi could answer her question, a voice came from the second floor. "I'll stay here with her." It was Jiang Fei.
Holding the wall for support, he walked out of the bedroom. After only taking a few steps, his handsome face was completely pale, but his tone was calm and resolute as he said, "You guys can go. I'll stay here with her."
Lu Xingchi looked up.
Jiang Fei met his gaze all the way from the stairs. Neither of them spoke.
Du Ruo suddenly butted in, "I'll stay here too."
Lu Xingchi: "..."
Du Ruo sincerely said, "Lu Xingchi, of these two, one is as weak as a chicken and the other one hasn't recovered yet. It's impossible for me to leave them behind. How about you go ahead without us?"
The atmosphere came to a silent standstill.
In the short span of a minute, the big boss's companions had deserted him, and he became a minority of one.
Lu Xingchi suddenly noticed that Jiang Fei had changed his clothes at some point. He had taken off his dirty prison uniform and put on a clean, white shirt. That shirt had exquisite workmanship and was dazzling in its whiteness. It looked oddly familiar.
"What he's wearing…" Lu Xingchi asked Bei Nuan.
"It's your clothing," Bei Nuan felt somewhat guilty and answered in a low voice, "His clothing was too dirty, so I took out your clothing. You weren't in the house earlier. I didn't have time to tell you."
Jiang Fei was thinner than Lu Xingchi, and his shoulders weren't as broad, so the white shirt didn't fit him as well and was a bit loose. The shirt on him gave off a very different feeling than when Lu Xingchi wore it.
Lu Xingchi looked at Bei Nuan. He was at a loss for words.
Bei Nuan clearly knew that this wasn't the time to say it, but she couldn't resist the desire to complete her task. "You have so many other shirts…" Bei Nuan snuck a glance at Lu Xingchi. "Can't you... be… a bit more... magnanimous?"
