Chapter 168 - You want to feed the zombies? (3)
Ten minutes later, Bei Nuan saw the largest and most-well known casino on the island. The casino was in the cave where they had gone when they arrived on the island. It was just located deeper in the cave.
The casino was very large, and to Bei Nuan's surprise, people could freely come and go. There weren't even any guards at the entrance to stop anyone.
Although there wasn't any natural light in the depths of the cavern, there were many gas lamps hung up. These lamps were much more advanced than the pine oil torches that people freely used outside.
There was a vast crowd inside the casino along with their hubbub of noises. It didn't resemble a casino. It was more like a noisy produce market.
The facilities in the casino were very comprehensive. They had gaming tables with real casino tokens. Other than stuff that required electricity, this place had everything.
Countless people were crowded at the gaming tables to try their luck.
There were neatly dressed bandits next to laborers wearing tags. There was no division of class here. Everyone was mixed together. The gamblers' eyes gleamed with greed as they stared at the gaming table and clutched their casino tokens, spending their lives in a befuddled existence.
Bei Nuan went through the clamorous crowd and looked for the big metal cages she had seen earlier. She had taken a full lap around the casino and looked everywhere, but she didn't see any traces of zombies. The zombies were definitely not placed out in the open. She guessed that the zombies were placed in the back for temporary storage after being brought to the casino.
Away from the lively gambling tables, there was a wide tunnel that looked very deep. The entrance of the tunnel was blocked by a rope and a sign that said, "Staff only. Do not enter. Violators will be punished." Only workers of the casino went in and out of the tunnel.
Bei Nuan observed for a while. It wasn't impossible for her to mingle her way in there.
Other than the gambling equipment that looked like it came from a real casino, everything else in the casino was casual. The dealers and waitresses didn't have uniforms and wore their own clothes. There was no way to judge who was or wasn't staff based on clothing.
Bei Nuan took a deep breath, walked forward, ducked under the rope, and walked into the tunnel.
No one stopped her.
The interior was very deep. There were rooms dug out on either side of the tunnel, and there were people inside the rooms drinking water and resting.
In the tunnel, someone passed by Bei Nuan and saw her, but that person didn't have any reaction.
There was also a kitchen in the back, and the workers were preparing the drinks and food ordered by the customers. There were barrels of home-brewed wine as well as various kinds of meat.
Bei Nuan walked to the depths of the tunnel and saw several rooms filled with various items including haphazardly stacked furniture, boxes, and utensils.
When she got to the innermost room, she finally saw the metal cages. It wasn't just the cages she had seen earlier today. There were a lot more cages, almost enough to fill the room.
Most importantly, although there was a metal gate at the entrance of the room, it wasn't locked. The door was even ajar. Even so, it was still safe because the zombies were locked in the cages.
Bei Nuan hastily slipped into the room and took out beef jerky from her pocket. It was much easier to throw beef jerky into the motionless big, metal cages than when they were on a moving truck. Even so, Bei Nuan still failed the first few times because of the barbed wire inside the cages.
Finally, she was able to throw a beef jerky into the gap between the barbed wire and into the cage.
The zombies had gotten up to lean against the barbed wire when they first saw Bei Nuan entering the room to roar at her. When one of them saw something flying into its cage, it picked it up. It sniffed it. Finding it unappetizing, the zombie threw away the beef jerky and went back to clawing at the barbed wire to try to get Bei Nuan, who smelled so much more delicious.
Bei Nuan quickly checked the taskbar. Although the zombie didn't eat the food, her task was still marked complete.
Bei Nuan thought; future zombie king, you don't have to try yourself. Your future subjects really have no interest in eating beef jerky.
The only thing that the zombies were interested in was Bei Nuan. They roared and desperately tried to get to her while drooling.
Bei Nuan picked up the beef jerky on the ground and was about to leave, but she suddenly realized there was something wrong. The frontmost metal cage didn't have a padlock.
The cage door of this kind of metal cage had a built in metal bolt. Even without a padlock, the door was firmly shut when the metal bolt was slid through. However, the metal bolt of the frontmost cage was only slid through halfway.
Normally, this was fine. But now that the zombies were attracted by Bei Nuan, they vigorously threw themselves against the cage door. The metal bolt was slowly sliding open through the shaking of the cage.
Bei Nuan leapt over and shoved the metal bolt shut. Who was so careless? That was terrifying.
Fortunately, she had noticed in time. Otherwise, after she had turned around, the zombie might have broken out of the cage and pounced on her.
Having secured the cage, Bei Nuan sighed in relief. Just as she was about to slip away, she heard the sound of footsteps and voices from outside.
