Chapter 174 - I believe in probabilities, and I also believe in miracles (3)
Right after Bei Nuan finished placing her bets, the burly man came back and led her through the crowd, up the stage, and into the cage.
The moment she walked into the cage, the audience fell silent. They hadn't expected the fourth contestant would be a girl. With her small, pure face, her guileless gaze, and being locked in a rough, big, metal cage, she was like a bird that had fallen into a trap.
"Little girl, are you here voluntarily?" One of the people reminded her, "If you're not willing, you can leave according to the casino's rules."
"Yeah, you're an F. Why did you come here to earn this kind of money? Are you in a hurry to die?"
Bei Nuan thought; other people willing came here, but she didn't. She didn't know why, but Qiu Zhengxun wanted to kill her and had no intention of letting her off.
Sure enough, the burly man didn't follow the normal procedure of asking her if she wanted to quit.
Bei Nuan went to the table and picked up the gun. It was the same as the one Qiu Ji had let her practice with.
The burly man loaded the gun with two bullets and took the other weapons out from the cage.
The metal cage containing a zombie was brought up and pushed into the fighting cage.
The zombie had been roaring in the cage. When it saw Bei Nuan, it kept throwing itself against the cage and tried to grab her through the barbed wire, causing the cage to wildly shake.
The burly man closed the metal cage and went to get the metal rod for opening the metal bolt on the zombie cage.
Bei Nuan composed herself and went to the corner farthest from the zombie cage.
Following Qiu Ji's teachings, Bei Nuan stood with her feet apart, held the gun with both hands, raised the gun, and aimed it at the door of the zombie cage.
The crowd was completely silent, unlike the liveliness of the previous fights.
Bei Nuan knew that everyone was watching her with bated breath, but she kept her focus on the door of the zombie cage.
The burly man looked at Bei Nuan with one last regretful look, extended the steel rod, and pushed open the metal bolt.
The moment the cage door opened, the zombied rushed towards Bei Nuan like an out-of-control wild dog.
Bei Nuan aimed the gun at the zombie's head, but she didn't shoot. She held steady and waited.
The zombie bared its teeth with only Bei Nuan in its eyes and beelined towards her.
Bei Nuan had used Qiu Ji and the burly man's heads as a comparison before. The closer the zombie got to her, the more certain she was. There were only two bullets. She couldn't waste them.
From the moment she picked up the gun, she had been silently chanting: I'm a gun stand, an unfeeling gun stand, a gun stand unafraid of zombies, a wooden gun stand.
She steadily stood there, utterly motionless, with the gun aimed at a zombie that wouldn't know to evade. She let the zombie get closer.
Everyone was holding their breaths. Since the game of zombie vs human had been added to the casino, the audience had seen people panicking in all sorts of ways. There were people that shot the bullets before the cage door was fully open, and people that tried to run away, completely forgetting they had a gun.
They have never seen someone able to stand there motionlessly and wait until the zombie was almost touching her without shooting. Had this girl lost her mind to fright when she saw the zombie rushing towards her?
Of course not. Bei Nuan didn't forget she had a gun. She was just waiting for the zombie to get closer so she had an easier target. When the zombie was at the perfect distance away, she shot.
The zombie came to an abrupt stop and fell down.
She accurately shot the center of the zombie's forehead and didn't need a second bullet.
The crowd was silent for a few seconds, and then there was an uproar of excited screams. Many people forgot their bets and cheered. Mixed in with the cheers and screams, there were loud curses from the people that were vexed about losing.
There were also people that hadn't recovered from their surprise. How can an F kill a zombie with a single shot?
Bei Nuan wasn't too excited. She had seen Lu Xingchi do the same thing hundreds of times. A zombie came rushing over, and he shot it right between its eyebrows. That action was repeated so many times in an emotionless, mechanical manner like he was doing mundane work.
So when she saw a zombie rushing over, she didn't feel the same fear other people did. She knew that Lu Xingchi could take care of everything. Even if a wave of zombies came at them like a swarm of locusts, she wouldn't feel scared if he was around.
Even though he wasn't here, it felt like he was here in spirit, and she merely took over his usual work. It was just killing one zombie. If she missed, he would laugh at her. If she needed a second shot, it would be the same as losing.
