Guarding Eldrian, such a strange request. While Myropsis recounting of what happened when Eldrian reached Tier 5 made it clear that this was needed, Evale couldn't wrap her head around why. Normally, training for a new tier was simple enough. However, when she heard Eldrian had a unique hidden class and a legacy he had to refine, it started to make sense.
To prevent casualties, they had moved past the border wall to where Eldrian normally trained. By now, the undead were scarcely in the area anymore. Regular patrols had, for the most part, cleared the surrounding areas.
Still, even with the undead missing, monsters were still very much present. Both in the Ganalin mountain range and the other small ranges. No one knew what one could find in the mountains. Not to mention the vast woods around lake Kyno.
She and Pelaros were guarding the area around Eldrian's barrier while he aimed to reach Tier 6. At first, he had simply been training to cast a spell. This was completely normal. Of course, the speed at which he mastered it was impressive as ever, but nothing out of the ordinary happened.
Next, Eldrian had sat down and started to meditate. From afar, Evale could not tell what he was doing, but it appeared casting a Tier 6 spell was not enough for him to reach Tier 6.
"Is this the cost of training in one of the so called hidden classes?" She asked Pelaros as he came to relieve her for the night. His duties in the city done for the day.
"I believe so. I've heard that it requires one to create a flow of mana within yourself. Which requires greater control of mana than I am capable of. Myropsis has been playing with the idea recently..." Pelaros paused. "I hope she has an easier time than Eldrian."
The barriers Eldrian had erected prevented Pelaros from sensing what was going on—the area contained too much mana for him to feel anything from as far as they were. Still, the grimace on Eldrian's face was clear. Whatever he was doing, it was painful.
Several hours later, Eldrian stopped whatever he was doing. Up until now, nothing unexpected had occurred. Yet Pelaros did not let his guard down. Myropsis had told him how two Ancient and one Mythical creatures had sought out Eldrian when he had attempted to reach Tier 5.
'I want to believe he learned from the past and adapted, but I should stay prepared.' Pelaros thought, and this proved the right choice. About an hour later, the surrounding mana stirred. Eldrian's barriers weakened, their mana stolen. Everything flowing towards him.
"Yes, this would attract some sensitive creatures. Though this level shouldn't bring anything I can't handle." Pelaros mumbled.
Readying his spells and taking out his staff sword. The Tier 10 items had been returned to the capital. They might even be somewhere on the battlefield again. They were kingdom treasures, so naturally Pelaros couldn't keep the sword.
Still, he had his own weapon. One he had made to his preferred fighting style. A staff sword, the staff part for helping with casting and the sword part for slashing any who got too close. Its range also helped him keep enemies at bay.
When he needed something with more heft, he would normally use his poleaxe. But for now, the staff sword was a better call. Pelaros also felt he would need its help to keep his spells from weakening.
As someone who had aimed for mayorship of the distant border city of Kynigo, Pelaros had wanted to avoid all the politicking happening the capital and ducal cities. At the time, the invasion had also yet to start. His goal had been to leisurely enjoy his life, perhaps find a partner... have some kids.
Sure, finding someone he could love had proven more difficult than he had imagined. It would have been easy to take someone who was after his family's power or money, but Pelaros had always believed he would marry for love.
"What am I even thinking about?" He grumbled, shaking the thoughts from his head. Needless to say, the invasion had ruined his plans to avoid politics and fighting. Since the invasion started, he had seen more battlefields than he cared to count.
"The first one, a wyvern... young one." Seeing how small it was, Pelaros half wanted to let it go.
Sadly, since he did not know how long this was going to take, he couldn't afford to go easy on anything that came along. Being overwhelmed because of his earlier mercy would be nothing to laugh about. Still, he did not want to outright kill the poor hapless creature.
"From its brown scales, this should be an earthen type wyvern. In that case," Pelaros raised his sword staff, aiming for the wyvern's right wing, "Thika se Pago."
At this incantation, a spear of ice formed at the tip of his staff sword. Shooting forth and penetrating the wyvern's wing. It cried out in pain. Sadly, this was just the start. The ice quickly spread. Freezing the wing, making flight impossible. With a cry, the wyvern fell.
Even from such a fall, it was not dead. However, it was terribly wounded. Upon inspection, Pelaros found the wyvern to only be Tier 3. Its parts would not be of great use, though they were still valuable.
"Sorry about this." Pelaros said as he approached the wyvern, staff sword raised. Its reach should enable him to end its life without entering the wyvern's attack range.
As Pelaros approached, the wyvern glared at him. It did not roar, seemingly aware it would do it no good. Yet, at the last moment, Pelaros could not bring himself to strike. Having spent a great deal of time with Ceph, he knew the wyvern was not a mindless monster. Only the undead could truly be considered such.
Still, even among monsters and magical creatures, a wyvern ranked amidst the top. As an Ancient creature, it could even learn to speak through magic. This one was too young to be capable of such, but older wyverns certainly could learn how to. Just like how Alicorns and their family, the pegasuses and unicorns could.
"Go on then. Leave if you value your life." He said, shooing it away.
As he was trying to show mercy, another wyvern appeared in the early morning sky. This one was about twice or trice as big as the wounded one. While the first one was only as large as a single room, this new one was about as big as a house.
"Green scales, so wind element." Pelaros thought, monitoring the wounded wyvern as he assessed the new arrival. "For wind, ice should word too. Though it might avoid falling with magic. It should scare it off."
Pelaros continued to repel the arriving wyverns, choosing his spells wisely to not waste his mana. Two hours later, Evale arrived. By now, Pelaros had killed four wyverns and scared off three more.
The first one was still around. It had not tried to attack or move towards Eldrian, so Pelaros had left it be.
"You've been busy." Evale said, shocked at the sight. While she wouldn't call it the sight of a disaster, there were certainly far too many bodies around.
Wyverns were not the only things that sought the source of the mana disturbance. There were Mavrosses (snake type monsters), Orthrusses (wolf type), Rocs (bird type), Drakes, and several other types Evale had only read about in books. She had no idea they even existed so close to Kynigo.
