Chapter 79: Chapter 81- Honesty's Result (2)

"We understand, sir," came forward a police officer, his uniform revealing him as the police chief of Sector 18.

He was the only one available right now, given that others had been called by headquarters to assist the Serstul family, who were trying to accomplish the task assigned by the Marquess of searching the records of two people.

Coincidentally, he, who was inside the sector 18 and was about to leave, received a call informing him that the same Marquess, whom they were trying to impress, would be meeting them in person.

But,

"....it's clear from the state of the dead body that there wasn't a chance of struggle here." He was not going to just stand idly by like all these people who wanted to gain favor with this man.

His honesty was above all else, even above his life.

"And I would like you to cooperate," he declared firmly, looking coldly down at Avendial as he moved his hand toward his pocket, trying to take out handcuffs.

Though there were no laws of free cities applicable to noblemen, he still had enough authority to at least detain that man in his custody until a representative or higher officials intervened.

Even though there was no need for handcuffs, knowing full well that this man, Marquess Avendial Croceaus, would easily be able to escape within a few minutes, he just wanted to humiliate him.

"Hey, idiot!"

Without caring about the status of the police chief, the prosecutor instantly burst out, not considering the law, given how this fool was going to offend someone who shouldn't even be messed with.

He was not alone; other prosecutors and police officers were also shocked to see their chief doing something so foolish.

The visitors who were looking in that direction were equally shocked.

Harshly, it was true that among those people, dozens were thinking how stupid he was to even consider offending Marquess Croceaus.

Among the 48 people, only one decided to follow his principles and honesty, showcasing a very harsh picture of society.

"Your name?"

Avendial slowly stood, his deep sapphire eyes looking coldly toward the officer.

His figure, not overly muscular but fit and impressively tall, was enough to stand on the same level as the police chief, glaring at him.

"It's Mathew, Mathew Chandler."

Stopping midway, as he saw the man standing, the police chief replied, feeling an invisible pressure from the Marquess—something unnoticeable yet strong enough to make it seem as if the whole hall was filled with his presence.

"You are fired."

Avendial, without hesitation, declared the fate of the police chief.

His voice was cold and echoed in the pin-drop silence that followed, as everyone looked toward a scene they would hardly witness in their lives.

"Huh?"

"W-wait?! My husband is admitted here!"

"No, my sister is in chemotherapy!"

One after another, individuals cried out, trying to stay, given that they were accompanying the patients.

They couldn't just leave their relatives alone, needing at least their phones to leave a message or something.

But it seemed that no police officers were hearing their pleas after the police chief had just been fired.

Of course, no official statement was made, but did it matter?

From the prosecutor's expression and the declaration made by the Marquess, it was clear that the police chief was indeed fired.

"Mathew," Avendial called out, causing everyone, except the man himself, to look in his direction.

They were slightly taken aback, hearing that name, which had dared to do something so foolish.

The officers halted in their tracks, and even the prosecutor, who was trying to cover the body with a white cloth, looked over there.

All were waiting to hear what other consequences this police chief would have to bear for opposing the Marquess.

"Y-yes," the man who had just become an ordinary citizen after losing his job as a police chief, looking down with lost thought brought by that same chilling sound, which had just written his fate, lifted his gaze looking in that direction, given how he couldn't afford to offend him any more than he had already done.

Matthew was not away from the harsh reality of society, but still, seeing how no one was trying to even make a simple effort, he wanted to take initiative and see others motivated by his decision, but all of them were just laughing at him from the inside, thinking he was mad or gone insane to even dare to raise his finger against that man.

So, he, this time, just replied to that voice, turning his gaze with the eyes which were soon going to lose their once pride.

After being shattered within a few seconds, he looked in the direction of the man, standing while holding a letter, his bony physique and silver hair alone by those deep blue eyes, looking intensely at him as he firmly declared.

"Join Croceaus Estate as soon as you can and give this letter to anyone there; you will instantly be appointed as chief of guards."

'!?!?'

"Wh-what?!"

Matthew's eyes widened, not understanding what he had just heard.

"Oh my God!!?"

All the officers, including the people who were leaving through the glass doors, emptying the hall room, were taken aback completely upon hearing the sudden promotion, which was a dream for most of them. Read latest stories on m_v-l'e|-novelhall.net

They all just wanted to gain the favor of Marcos and join his estate.

"Th-this?!"

Even the senior prosecutor was completely taken aback.

He had never anticipated that the man whom he thought would face dire consequences would receive what the prosecutor himself had worked hard for all his life.
