Evan and Ritsuka stood in the yard as the others watched. Jiro had reluctantly pulled his attention away from Rumiko and Cory, over to the two boys.
"Alright, this is just a spar match. Don't try to kill each other." Jiro shouted. "Get ready. Set. Go!"
Obsidian Glass appeared in Ritsuka's hands as he sprinted forward. Evan summoned the shield and moved forward. He didn't know what he could show, but he would try his best. Evan and Ritsuka met in the middle, Ritsuka connecting the sword with the shield. Evan grunted as the aura around his shield started to glow a dark purple. Evan shoved him off and prepared himself for the next hit. Ritsuka sent a flurry of blows, Evan's shield aura slowly changing from purple to an indigo color.
Evan couldn't do anything with the barrages. He moved backwards to try to give himself distance, but Ritsuka continued to push forward. Rituska batted the shield away and Evan left himself wide open.
'Shit, I need to do something now.' Evan threw his left hand up and watched as Ritsuka's movement started to slow. Evan kicked the side of Ritsuka, pulling him back into normal speed and stumbling to his right as Evan moved in for an uppercut. Ritsuka moved his arms in and blocked the uppercut, swinging the sword straight for Evan.
Evan stumbled backwards, glancing down at his fresh wound. He winced as Ritsuka regained his balance.
"Oh, he got a hit in." Rumiko noticed. "Will he be alright after that?" Ritsuka dashed forward for another flurry of blows when a whistle went off.
"Alright, that's enough!" Ryu shouted. Ritsuka stopped mid swing and noticed Evan's wound..
"Hayami, he's bleeding!" Ritsuka pointed, the sword disappearing from his hand.
"You should've been more careful." Hayami scolded her brother. They were the closest in age. Hayami was only twenty-two while Ritsuka was seventeen. Hayami moved over and looked at Evan's wound. It wasn't deep but it looked like Evan wasn't used to being cut.
"Hold still, Evan. It'll only take a moment." Hayami told him. Her body glowed a teal color as she hovered her hand over the wound. They watched as Evan's wound disappeared, leaving the cut shirt.
"There. All better." Hayami gave them a thumbs up. Evan stared a t the cut shirt while Ritsuka barraged him with "are you okays."
"Not bad." Cory told Evan. Evan turned and looked at Cory. He and Rumiko had come closer. "I think you have a great start at your powers, but there's a couple things I noticed." He pointed at the shield. "That's your focus, right?"
"My what?" Evan lifted the shield and stared at it.
"Focus. That's what we call an item or weapon that's used to channel someone's powers. It's like Jiro's power centers around his longsword." Rumiko explained. "That shield is your focus."
"Oh. I guess then?"
"Well, I noticed that your shield gives off an aura. It changes color. Do you know why?" Cory asked.
"It does that when I take in hits. I don't know why it does that, but sometimes it changes back to a darker color when I use my power." Evan explained. Cory and Rumiko nodded.
"It could be the next main source of your power then." Ryu chimed in.
"Mmm, he's right." Rumiko nodded.
"Yeah, I think so too." Cory agreed. "Your shield is a manifestation of your power. It's a way for you to take kinetic energy coming in. What happens when that energy comes into you?"
"I think it goes into the shield. I just don't understand how I can use that energy and redirect it… Is slowing the kinetic energy of things around me a part of what I can do?" Evan asked.
"I certainly think so." Ryu nodded.
"Mmm, just like Ryu said, if you can manipulate kinetic energy by slowing it, what if you could use your Focus to release it? What would happen?" Cory added.
"It's a great start." Jiro commented. "We should figure it out. Once we get an answer for that, you should ask yourself what else you can do with Kinetic Redirection. If you can redirect kinetic energy into your Focus, use that stored energy on others, what else could you possibly do with that?"
Back at the Cave
"You are a Trainor. We don't give up! When a wall comes our way, we smash it to bits!" Evan shouted. His body began to glow, radiating different colors as it spread across his body. The wall shattered, revealing the shifter.
"You will die!" The shifter shouted. A rush of stone and dirt flew forward at him like a wave of water. "Entomb!"
'All of my training with the Yamada's and the consistent training I've done on my own have led me to this moment. If I don't give my all here now, will I get a chance to do it in the future?!?' Evan thought.
Huge rush of rocks and dirt swarmed around Evan. The female shifter was going to bury him alive, crushing him. Evan's form shimmered brighter. He could feel the shield sinking into his body.
"Stop." Evan whispered. A pulse of shimmering light flew out in all directions, instantly slowing everything to a stop. The female shifter's eyes raised in surprise. She tried to move but Evan simply continued forward. He moved through the earth, pushing it away from him. He moved straight up to the shifter and glared at her.
'W-what's happening to me? Why can't I move?!? Did this puny human stop everything?' She watched as Evan's form shimmered brightly. He tilted his head and tapped her. The earth behind him slammed into each other, creating a ball of earth.
'What did he do?' The shifter wondered. 'Why can't I–'
"How long until they're here?" Evan asked. "I don't think I can hold this much longer."
"They're right on you! Get away from the shifter!" Tiffi shouted. Evan jumped backwards, releasing a kinetic blast, sending the shifter backwards. The shifter gasped as her body unfroze, slamming into the wall behind her. The wall behind Evan and the unconscious Olivia shattered in an instant.
'They're here.' Evan thought. 'Finally.' His vision blurred as he landed, almost falling.
"Hey, are you alright?" Ramirez asked, catching Evan.
"The shifter…" Evan could feel his body bouncing between a state of heaviness to being light. His Negative usually slowed him to a stop, but this was different. It was moving between two states.
"You worm!" The shifter shouted. Earth flew out as two women moved in front of Ramirez and Evan, shielding them from the attack.
"Alright, everyone! Listen up!" Victoria shouted. "Kill the shifters at all costs. Protect the students!"
"Yes, ma'am!" The group shuffled into the room. The Shifter narrowed her eyes.
"It looks like the real fun has begun!" She chuckled. "I should crush all of you and bring your heads back to him!" Victoria pulled the gun holstered on her side out and cocked it. She pointed it straight at the Shifter, unamused. She pulled the trigger, watching the bullet accelerate, piercing straight through the Shifter's shoulder.
The shifter screamed in pain as she retaliated with rocks.
"You two, deal with the girl." Ramirez ordered.
"Yes, sir." The two women pulled off to the left as Ramirez held onto Evan, moving backwards.
"I'll let you guys enjoy the hunt." Ramirez told Victoria and the others.
"Tido, shatter the wall and let's get going." Victoria ordered.
"Yes, ma'am!" Tido and three other group members moved forward. Victoria held her pistol in the air, watching the situation unfold before them.
"I will Entomb you all!" The earth shook as stone and dirt shifted all around them. The earth collapsed onto Tido's squad. Victoria watched unamused.
"Hahaha, take that you stupid humans! I will hang the fat one as a trophy!" The shifter shouted. Victoria's eye twitched.
"Oh, shit, you shouldn't have said that." Ramirez turned and commented. Victoria pointed the pistol at the Shifter and sighed.
"And you just lost your living privileges." Victoria commented. She sent another shot out.
"I know your tricks!" The shifter pulled the earth to block, but the bullet flew straight through the walls, shattering everything it passed through. It flew straight through the Shifter's head, exploding the wall behind them. Tido and the group exploded out of the earth tomb and watched as the Shifter's eyes grew wide.
"How…" The shifter managed to let out before her body hit the floor.
"Tido, do your thing." Victoria ordered. Tido raised his hand and pulled the earth upwards, wrapping around the shifter. Two other members on Tido's team wrapped it in metal as they pulled it towards them. The metal tomb clanked off to the side as they started forward.
"Let's find the others." Victoria told them.
"H-help him…." Evan croaked. Ramirez looked down at Evan.
"Who?" Ramirez asked.
"L-Lee Seng… The… Fox… Boy…" Evan's eyes rolled back and Ramirez began to call Evan, tapping his face.
"Evan! Evan!" Ramirez called out. "He's out. Medics, take him back!" Medics ran over and Ramirez set the boy in one of the floating capsules.
"What did he say, Ramirez?" Victoria asked.
"To save Lee Seng."
"Isn't that what Mr. Yamada said?"
"Yes, ma'am. I fear the worst for the rest now."
"Come on ,everyone! Let's continue!" Victoria motioned forward.
"Update!" Tiffi's voice broke over their comms. "I've lost connection with Lee Seng!"
"What happened?" Victoria asked. "Didn't you have eyes on him? Wasn't he doing fine?"
"Something happened! The two female Shifters were getting oppressed by him and binded together! They overpowered him and Lee Seng took off the glasses, so I can't see him! He smashed it!"
"Dammit." Victoria muttered. "Alright, how about the other two? How are they?"
"Worse for wear." Manny's voice weakly broke out. "Shifter… down. We need medical… I can't heal… Liz… She's…"
