84 Suspicious Activity

“Doctor Carl, I need you to come with m-” Vincent abruptly stopped speaking after barging inside Carl’s clinic.

He happened to see Carl leaning down, touching, and looking at a young red-headed woman’s stomach.

However, when Carl heard Vincent and realized that he wasn’t alone with that woman, he got so startled that he jerked his hand downward in an abrupt motion to cover that woman’s stomach with her cloth, and he jumped to go and stood in the other corner of the room.

And instead of getting nervous about “getting caught in the act”, Carl let out a sigh of relief as if Vincent wasn’t the person he was expecting to see at his door.

Vincent pressed his lips together and questioningly looked at Carl. He was sure that he had just witnessed something that he shouldn’t have. But he was surprised to see the doctor sighing in relief and playing it cool as if nothing had happened inside of that room just a few seconds ago.

“Lord Vincent! How may I be of assistance to you?” Carl bowed and asked the vampire.

Vincent frowned and kept on giving a subtle glare to the doctor. His mind was full of demeaning and snarky comments as he found the doctor’s behavior to be very suspicious.

But he controlled his mouth and said after highly filtering his words, “Okay. I get that everyone has their dark sides. But, what the hell was that? What were you doing to that young lady over there?”

Vincent turned his gaze from Carl to that woman. She was hanging her head low and was facing away from Vincent. Vincent could clearly hear her heart hammering inside her chest, right from where he was standing.

.....

And his suspicion that Carl was doing something indecent to that red-headed woman became even stronger. But he wasn’t sure if that woman was also in it or if that doctor was doing something to her against her will.

“What did he do to you?” Vincent asked that woman in a stern voice.

But that only made that woman jump a little and tilt her head to touch her shoulder as though she felt a sudden pain.

Carl half-raised his hands in front of his chest and went and stood in front of the lord. And he calmly said to Vincent, “It’s not what you think, Milord. I wasn’t doing anything bad to her. She is my patient. I was simply checking her wounds.”

“If you were only looking at her wounds then why did you act like you were caught red-handed?” Vincent asked, folding his arms. This time, he sounded way too serious than he would normally sound.

Vincent wasn’t trying to be nosy about other people’s business. He didn’t care who that woman was.

He was simply trying to make sure that this doctor wasn’t a pervert. Vincent didn’t want a degenerate person to stand anywhere near the Queen, leave alone diagnose her.

Carl gave a nervous laugh and replied to Vincent, “I was simply startled when I heard your voice, Milord. That’s all.” And he further emphasized his point indirectly, “I am an old man with a lovely wife. And I love her very dearly.”

Vincent narrowed his eyes at the doctor because he didn’t believe a word that came out of his mouth.

So he decided to question the woman again. If she was being abused by that doctor, then Vincent had already thought of snapping that doctor’s head straight away, not for that woman’s sake but for betraying Caspian’s trust.

Vincent didn’t need to guess how Caspian would feel if Carl turned out to be an assaulter. Carl had checked up on Anastasia twice before. And if Caspian found out that his intentions weren’t pure at that time, Vincent didn’t even want to imagine what Caspian would do to Carl. Snapping Carl’s head would be great mercy because he would get an instant and easy death.

Vincent walked past Carl and stood in front of that woman. And he asked again, “What did he do to you? You don’t have to be scared of this old man if he did anything against your will. I will take care of him.”

That woman was still looking away from Vincent. She was continuously tapping her foot on the ground ever since Vincent walked inside the clinic. She seemed agitated and afraid.

And even when Vincent asked questions to her, she wasn’t uttering a single word.

“Hey lady, I am asking you something. Didn’t you hear me?” Vincent assertively said again. He leaned against the wall and tried to get a look at her face just because she was trying to hide it so badly.

That woman hung her head even lower when she felt Vincent hovering near her. And to get him to back off, she answered in a whisper, “No. Mr. Carl did nothing to me. As he said, he was only looking at my wounds.”

Vincent lowered his gaze towards that woman’s stomach. She was covered right now, but Vincent was almost sure that she was lying about the wounds.

He wanted to ask that woman to prove that she was wounded. However, it would be inappropriate of him to ask that from a lady.

Vincent sighed deeply and said to that woman, “Okay, if you say so.”

He had already wasted a lot of time when the Queen needed an immediate checkup. So, he thought of letting this matter rest for now.

Vincent turned to give a piercing gaze to the doctor again.

The doctor was trying his best to stand upright with his head held high. He didn’t want to show any signs on his face that said that he was indeed doing something shameful earlier.

Vincent rolled his eyes, seeing that fake confidence. He didn’t want to ask that doctor to come with him to the castle after everything that had just happened. However, Vincent also didn’t have any time to go around the Silver Keep and look for another doctor.

So he reluctantly yet authoritatively said to Carl, “I will give you the benefit of the doubt this time. Grab whatever it is that you need. We’re going to the castle. Now.”

“To the castle?” Carl asked out of habit.

“The Queen is sick. I heard her maids saying that she had something called fever. So-” Vincent shifted his gaze at that woman again when she suddenly lifted her head and looked at him.

He narrowed his eyes at that woman because he felt like he had seen her somewhere before. And he asked without wasting a second, “Have we met before?”

That woman widened her eyes just a little, but it was noticeable enough for Vincent.

“We’ve met, haven’t we?” he asked again.

But that woman hung her head low again and shook her head. And before Vincent could question her further or stare at her face long enough for him to recall where they had met before, that woman got up and staggeringly rushed out of the clinic.

Vincent was looking out of the door, contemplating whether or not to go after that woman. He found her behavior to be very suspicious.

But before he could decide on what to do next, Carl stood in front of him and gave a nervous smile. He had a small suitcase in his hand.

And he politely said to Vincent, “I don’t think we should be wasting time here, Milord. The Queen might be in pain and might be in need of immediate help.”

Vincent gave a fake smile and replied, “You’re lucky that you’re right. Let’s get going.”
