Chapter 51: Silas’ Regrets

Rex woke up, rubbing his drowsy eyes. He had only slept for five hours and dang! It was time for school again. He had a lot of things to figure out now. First, he had to check up on Seraphina and Magnus to know how they were faring. Next was General Silas...

and then finally, he had to check up on the hunter’s guild Brenda referred him to.

He still had to confirm if the general was involved in his assassination. He should be able to figure out most of the information at his current level and maxed out god’s eyes.

"Harbinger! Thou art awake!!" Cronus chimed in, his voice sounding like an alarm

Rex groaned, standing up from the bed "Yeah, I don’t need you to tell me that"

He quickly changed into his academy uniform, feeling the stiff fabric cling to his skin. "Ugh, I hate how formal this looks," he muttered, staring at his reflection. The academy’s crest, a silver phoenix rising from flames, gleamed on his chest.

Making his way downstairs, Rex grabbed a quick bite before heading out the door. As he stepped outside, the cool morning air hit him, snapping his senses into full alert.

"You know, Cronus," Rex began, walking down the empty street, "for someone who’s always in my head, you’d think you’d help me manage my time better."

Cronus chuckled, his voice as amused as ever. "Harbinger, time management is your responsibility. I merely provide the power to manipulate it. One could argue thou art not using thine own potential to its fullest."

Rex snorted. "Yeah, well, thanks for that deep, ancient wisdom."

Rex took his casual stroll to the Academy as usual, unperturbed by the normal hustle and bustle of the city. He had more things on his mind and besides... it seems Cronus had something to say as he kept on sighing in Rex’s head.

"What do you want to say?"

"Speaking more of ancient wisdom, Harbinger, I think thou shalt need allies on this thy journey, trustworthy ones!" Cronus replied, his tone sounding somewhat bitter.

"Allies? What do you mean? There’s no way I can tell anyone about you or the system and besides...how do you think people will react if I told them I’ve got a talking titan in my head" Rex sighed patting his head softly.

"A time will come when thou shalt need valuable support from allies and even unexpected sources! The gods are more powerful than thou thinkest... so thou shalt surely need to tell someone about me and the system in the future.

Rex thought for a while, scratching his head, trying to process the information "And here I was thinking I’d be playing the "Secret Identity" stuff.

"Sometimes harbinger, the truth ought to be told!"

Rex continued walking toward the academy, processing what Cronus had said. The streets were growing busier, filled with people going on with their daily lives. He glanced around, watching them go about their mundane lives. It felt strange to know that, while they were worried about assignments and exams, he was out here trying to stop assassins and uncover ancient godly conspiracies.

"Truth, huh? I’ll keep that in mind for when I don’t want people thinking I’m insane." Rex smirked, though Cronus remained silent this time, leaving him alone with his thoughts.

Rex arrived at the academy, his mind taking note of what needed to be done. First was Seraphina. He didn’t know what Group she belonged to so he decided to ask around and fortunately, he spotted Magnus.

Rex made his way across the courtyard toward Magnus, who was surrounded by a small group of students. The guy was practically radiating energy this morning, his goofy grin in place as always. He had a habit of drawing people in with his carefree attitude. Rex noticed Brenda standing nearby too, talking to a couple of other students but throwing Magnus occasional glances.

Magnus, being as oblivious as ever, was too busy bragging about some new fire ability he had learned.

"Hey, Magnus," Rex called out, catching his attention.

Magnus looked over, his face lighting up. "Yo, Rex! What’s up, man?"

"Not much. Just checking in on you." Rex glanced at Brenda, giving her a nod, which she returned with a slight smile. "I assume you two didn’t get into too much trouble while I was... out?"

"Aha!" Magnus laughed throwing a soft punch at Rex’s chest "You sure missed out on some fun things... And by the way, why did you and Seraphina leave the place? You guys needed a private time?"

"You know, Lyra, the kid is right! if you’re going to keep walking in here like you’re about to marry the classroom, you should expect proposals."

Lyra’s face went from embarrassed to outright furious, her cheeks flaming as she stammered, "I...I don’t...this is outrageous!" She adjusted her robe dramatically, straightening it as if that would somehow erase the joke. "We’re here to discuss ability theory, not my personal life!"

"Right," Magnus chimed in, still smirking, " theory... like how to conjure up a husband?"

The room exploded again, and even Cronus couldn’t resist. "Perhaps thou could assist her with a time-altering spell for love," he whispered in Rex’s mind, making Rex chuckle audibly.

"Damn! I never knew Magnus was a good teaser!" Rex laughed

Lyra, her patience on the edge of breaking, stomped toward the blackboard, pointing at Magnus. "One more comment like that, and I’ll have you fighting an advanced-level dummy throughout the day!

"Aw, come on, Miss Lyra!" Magnus held up his hands, feigning innocence. "I’m just looking out for you. I mean, time waits for no one, right?"

Silas crossed his arms, clearly enjoying the chaos. "You know, Magnus has a point. There are plenty of lonely hunters out there who’d love a nice robe-wearing magic instructor."

Miss Lyra’s hands twitched as if she was trying to decide whether to freeze Magnus. "This is not the time for matchmaking!" She huffed and turned to the class, completely red-faced now. "Everyone, open your textbooks to page 72, now!"

"Before that!" General Silas’ voice instantly switched to a more authoritative tone as he pointed at Rex "I’d like you to see me after the Practical sessions are over!" And with that, he walked out

"Oh... of course I’ll see you!" Rex smirked

"Why does he regret trying to kill me?"

"Higher ups?"

"Hmmm" Rex’s face darkened as he watched Silas walk away.
