Volume 1: The Light
In the process of learning magic, the most common roadblock is the act of “letting the magic out of the body,” which is what Callus is facing right now.
If a person has enough magic power to use magic, it is not so difficult to put magic in his/her body. However, when it comes to the next stage, the number of people who can do it is decreases.
I, who am now popularly known as “Sage Gory,” also had a hard time clearing this step when I was young.
It is said that Light Magic is more difficult to learn than other types of magic.
There are various theories as to why, but I believe it is because “Light Spirits are often capricious.” Like when your magic is bad, just say something complimentary to the spirits, and it would instantly return to normal.
If I told this to other magicians, they would not believe me.
Callus would take time too.
At least, that’s what I thought…
“… What is this?”
When I entered the room, I saw countless balls of light floating in the air.
Not only were there many of them, but there were also many varieties.
Some were large, some were small. Some were strong, some were weak.
Some were moving around energetically, while others stayed in place.
I don’t recall ever teaching Callus how to do such things yet.
“Oh, Master, Good morning! Look, I can now produce up to eight balls of light! I think I can produce ten if I try hard enough, but I’m stopping at eight because I think I’m going to lose control of the operation if I add more.”
“I see.”
What do you mean already doing eight isn’t good enough?
This process is like drawing different figures with your left and right hands. If you have three or four more, it is akin to drawing a picture with your feet. It is something that cannot be done without special training.
“How did you do it?”
It’s not that I thought Callus had no talent. But even so, he was certainly out of… the norm. He must be brimming with luck.
It might be an ironic thing to say, considering that he’s literally learning magic to overcome his lifelong curse.
But even so, I have high expectations that this child may become a Sage, or even better than that—
“All right, let’s get you to control to ten light balls by the end of the day. We’re going to go hard, are you up for it?”
""
“Yes, I’ll do my best!”
I then began to teach Callus, who had already started to learn some tricks by himself. He was visibly improving.
This kid is really good at remembering things.
He absorbs what I teach him like a sponge.
Of course, there’s also the underlying fact that that if he doesn’t learn, he will die. But other than that, I think it is also because he enjoys it. He enjoys learning more than anything else.
The fortunate ones are always sitting cross-legged on their laurels, but this kid has none of that. He had perseverance and dedication, which was greatest “strengths” of a magician.
“I feel like I am polishing a diamond.”
I muttered to myself quietly, as I carefully guided him on the correct path.
