Chapter 2034: A Softie?
The Glorious Pill Palace actually sent 100 Peak-Level Spirit Stone Vein Sources, returning half the wealth they tried to trick him out of using Dalila Leehan as the exchange while also giving him an additional 50 Peak-Level Spirit Stone Vein Sources.
Davis’s brows couldn’t help but twitch as he imagined their unsightly yet boot-licking expressions while giving the gift to Natalya.
Natalya had told him that it was some important news, so his mind went to search for some remnants he had left or the consequences of his actions, and although it was the latter, it came in a positive way instead of the negative ones he thought.
“The message you meant for our potential enemies was too strong for them.”
Isabella grinned while Fiora giggled.
“Hehe~ They became scared shitless.”
Davis nodded. As expected, only absolute power can suppress people’s greedy and ambitious thoughts.
He raised his hand and patted Natalya’s head, “I heard something good and hilarious. Thanks!”
“Hehe~”
Natalya placed both her palms on her cheeks as she melted. Davis knew that this matter had been bothering her because she tried to get his wealth back, putting the burden on herself and selfishly becoming disappointed by herself when she couldn’t, so this was a piece of joyous news for her.
“Both Venerate Pill Emperors are waiting for you in the guest hall. Shall I make the arrangements for them to see you?”
Natalya asked, but Davis shook his head.
“Let them wait for some more time. I’m more looking forward to spending time with you all.”
“You’re the best!”
Natalya jumped and tightly hugged him.
Davis laughed before he spent an hour with them chatting, sometimes flirting as his evil hands wandered. He got berated multiple times for being a big pervert, but they still had their smiles, genuinely giggling and laughing as they gathered around him.
He knew this was what he wanted, to have a family and live with them forever. That thought didn’t change one bit as he laughed along with them.
========
A white-robed woman sat in a lotus position in another room, crimson flames with a tinge of gold revolving around her. Her eyebrows flickered ever so lightly. Her silky blonde hair hovered as they were lifted up by the heat emanating around her. However, rather than finding it difficult to cultivate, it looked like she was distracted by something.
The flames receded a few seconds later, and she opened her eyes. They were slightly red, indicating that she had shed some tears not too long ago.
*Tok!~*
A knock on the door caught her attention just as she was about to try again, making her stand up as she headed towards the door and opened it.
“Big sister…” Niera’s voice was somber.
However, Evelynn didn’t seem to mind it, giving a look inside before she asked.
“You seem too busy with cultivation. Can I enter?”
Niera’s expression flickered before she nodded. She closed the door after Evelynn entered, following her around as her lips moved.
“Is Davis fine?”
“He is fine.” Evelynn satisfactorily nodded.
“Has he woken up yet?”
“Yes. He wants to see you soon. Will you go?”
Niera froze, but then a wry expression filled her face.
“I… don’t have any face left to see him.”
“…?”
Evelynn looked confused, but at this moment, she noticed Sophie walking from another room within this unit.
“Sophie, you were not in your room but here this whole time?”
“That’s right, big sister.” Sophie yawned as she placed her palm on her lips.
It seemed like she slept for a while, lazily walking before she arrived before Evelynn and whispered in her ear.
“After all, Niera’s a softie who laments those poor children’s fate. I can’t leave her alone.” Her voice was gentle as she glanced at Niera.
‘No kidding.’
Evelynn smiled as she knew how Davis came to love Niera. It was for her honest gaze and pure determination to sacrifice herself in her family’s stead when he gave them a trial that could essentially make them kill each other. Such a pure soul would lament any lives shed, much less the lives of children.
However, what she wanted to know was if Niera’s belief in Davis had crumbled. If it has collapsed, then as sisters who crossed their episode of tragedy not too long ago, she would feel saddened. Thinking like this, a glint of determination appeared in Evelynn’s eyes.
“Niera, do you think what Davis did was wrong?”
“It’s not a matter of right or wrong…”
“Then what’s wrong? Why would you say something like that? Have you lost faith in hi-“
“No!”
Niera clenched her fists, her body quivering as she looked straight at Evelynn. Her eyes were fierce, and she even looked angry to be questioned that part of her conviction. However, she knew that she was out of her mind these few days.
Unable to bear the weight, Niera’s lips quivered as tears fell.
“If I was only stronger like sister Lea and made the Alstreim Family impregnable, he… he wouldn’t have needed to make a decision like that. I’m sure what he did hurts him as well. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be the person I fell in love with. It’s all my fault.”
Sophie and Evelynn became stunned, but they watched her continue as she grabbed her trembling arm.
“We are strong for our ages, but it’s not enough. This is clearly my responsibility. Call it my arrogance or whatever you want. I feel accountable for this matter, so those children’s blood is in my hands, not his or anyone else’s.”
Evelynn’s eyes were wide as she watched Niera return to her cultivation room.
Indeed, Davis did feel bad for that matter, or else he wouldn’t have shed a tear when she made him feel that it was alright, that she would be there for him even if everything around him collapsed.
However, she also knew that he didn’t feel regret over it. After all, she, of all people, knew that Davis wouldn’t do things that he regrets. He must have given them multiple chances for them to push him to do it, or that was what she saw.
Nonetheless, it seems that Niera was thinking in an entirely different way than they were.
“Sophie, it seems like we all misunderstood Niera.”
Evelynn wryly looked at Sophie, whose lips twitched
“As her closest sister, this is embarrassing for me.”
She didn’t feel responsible for the Alstreim Family’s safety at all because she felt that Davis protected it. But unlike her, Niera felt herself to be the greatest genius of the Alstreim Family when excluding Davis and Clara because their true family names were Loret. Because of that, Niera felt more responsible when concerning Alstreim Family’s safety.
“Well, thanks to big sister confront my stubborn sister, now we all know what was going on in her mind.”
Sophie exhaled, causing Evelynn to dryly smile.
“Was she always that prideful?”
“No, it had actually grown from back then.” Sophie shook her head, “After all, she is one of us, which is greater than being the Young Mistress of the Alstreim Family. If I had to guess why she’s so sad, what she wanted was a clear history for the Alstreim Family to rise, but now that it has been stained with the blood of young innocents, she thinks that karma would follow suit in various ways, harming us, harming our children. She doesn’t blame Davis but blames herself for her weakness which apparently forced him to take that cruel decision. This is harder to resolve than her simply blaming him without much thought.”
Sophie wryly smiled, feeling a bit of irony as well as a headache as she knew Niera was a stubborn person.
Once Niera decided on something, she most likely wouldn’t change it. Even Niera’s decision to follow her back then was suicidal. If it weren’t for that, Sophie felt like she would’ve never seen Niera as a true sister, so she understood the best about Niera that she wouldn’t easily back down from taking responsibility, although it was needless.
Just when she was wondering what she could do to retrieve Niera back from her self-harming conviction, Evelynn walked towards Niera’s cultivation room and knocked on her door.
“Niera, you only heard what the world spread. I won’t refute the weight of the matter. However, did you know that Davis left the children below three years old alive?”
“Eh? Really!?” Sophie swiftly turned her head, looking shocked.
Just before Evelynn could nod, the door opened with force as Niera stood there stunned, her moistened eyes appearing to want to know the truth.
“Tell me more… please…”
