Chapter 483: Why 482

Mo Xiuchen knew that even if Wen Ran proposed divorce, she still loved him in her heart.

He really wished she cared about him enough not to leave. He hoped she could be stronger, more indifferent to those things…

Wen Ran’s movements were light, gentle. Her tender fingers softly caressing the tears at the corner of his eyes, seemed to silently tell him how much she loved him.

She focused and stubbornly wiped away his tears, regardless of her own tear-streaked face. Her voice trembled as she softly called his name: “Xiuchen.”

Mo Xiuchen’s lips were tightly pressed together. The moment his tears were wiped away, he looked past her delicate figure and saw the room filled with newspapers.

His eyes suddenly pained, and his tall figure stiffened.

Wen Ran turned her head and glanced at the newspapers all over the floor, curving the corners of her mouth into a desolate smile. Mo Xiuchen’s heart tightened at the sight.

Her self-mocking voice choked, each word hammering into Mo Xiuchen’s heart: “Xiuchen, before this, I really thought you were physically unwell. After reading these newspapers, I realized how stupid I was.”

Mo Xiuchen’s eyes narrowed sharply. He closed the door, took her hand and pulled her into his embrace. He held her tightly, as if trying to meld her into his body, apologizing with guilt and regret: “Ranran, it’s not your stupidity, I shouldn’t have deceived you. If you’re angry about my deception, I apologize to you.”

His voice paused, guiltily saying: “Ranran, I’m sorry!”

“I’m not angry.”

Wen Ran felt that every word she uttered took all her strength.

Each word he spoke made her heart ache more. She suddenly wanted to break free from his embrace, but he was holding her too tightly, she couldn’t.

“So tell me, why the divorce? Is it because the sick person isn’t me, but you? Ranran, do you still remember what you once said when we first got married?”

Mo Xiuchen kept holding her without loosening his grip.

His voice was low, gentle yet filled with an inescapable affection, murmuring into her ear, reminding and accusing: “You once said that many couples, despite no sex life, can still grow old together. As for us, we simply don’t want children. If you like, we can adopt. How many you want, we’ll adopt that many. We’ll love them as our own…”

“Xiuchen, you just agreed with me.”

Mo Xiuchen was met with a few brief words from Wen Ran.

The heartache in her eyes was gone, the anguish on her face hidden. Her face, with the tear streaks not yet dry, regained its original cold indifference. As if everything he was saying was none of her concern.

Mo Xiuchen felt his heart clench, a feeling of suddenly falling into an abyss.

He suddenly pulled her out of his arms, gazed deeply into her eyes and gravely asked: “Ranran, who was on the phone?”

Wen Ran avoided his sharp gaze, lowered her eyelids, and said blandly: “A stranger, I don’t know him.”

A stranger?

Mo Xiuchen squinted his eyes, not believing her words.

A terrifying thought flashed through his mind. If it were an ordinary person, they would only know about Ranran’s infertility. Even if she was initially unable to accept it, she wouldn’t be so determined to divorce him.

She had never mentioned the word divorce to him before.

Unless the person was Fu Jingyi.

Last time, on the day of the press conference, Fu Jingyi had called her father, Gu Yan. If he had called Ranran, what he would tell her would definitely be more than what others could.

“Ranran, tell me, was it Fu Jingyi who called you?”

“No! As I said, it was a stranger. I don’t know who he is, he didn’t introduce himself. He just told me to buy a newspaper.”

Wen Ran interrupted Mo Xiuchen impatiently, broke free from his hand, and turned towards the middle of the room.

Mo Xiuchen tightly pressed his lips together, followed her to the center of the room, crouched down beside Wen Ran who was picking up the newspapers.

Together, they picked up all the newspapers off the floor, neatly stacked. Wen Ran took the newspapers from his hand. Her emotions had calmed down, her gaze at him was serene: “Xiuchen, this is not a spur-of-the-moment decision. Don’t try to convince me. Let’s part ways amicably. After that, we each live our own lives, okay?”

“What if I say it’s not okay?”

Looking at her coldly determined face, Mo Xiuchen spat out those words.

Marry and never see each other again?

He loved her too much, more than himself, how could he bear to divorce her? Just thinking about losing her made his heart ache unbearably.

Wen Ran forced a smile, “Xiuchen, if you don’t agree, I will take back all my love. Being with a woman who doesn’t love you is meaningless.”

“It’s enough that I love you. I don’t care whether you love me or not. What matters to me is that you’re by my side.”

At his words, Wen Ran’s face turned pale.

“You promised me just now. You can’t go back on your word.”

Facing this Mo Xiuchen, Wen Ran felt very helpless.

She knew he could be stubborn too. Yet, at this moment, he was like a stubborn child, which besides making her feel more heartbroken, made her unable to get angry.

Mo Xiuchen held her gaze, his eyes so deep they were like an ancient lake, as if wanting to draw her entire being into them, “You also promised me, unless I propose a divorce, you will always be by my side.”

He actually brought up their old agreement.

Wen Ran’s eyes widened in surprise. Before she could reply, her cellphone rang abruptly.

Mo Xiuchen’s gaze deepened. He took the stack of newspapers from her hands and stood up. She took out her phone, glanced at the caller ID, and pressed the answer button: “Hello, Brother.”

“Ranran, where are you?”

Wen Ran looked at Mo Xiuchen in front of her, gave out their current address and the name of the hotel.

“Ranran, stay there, don’t leave. I’ll be right there.”

Wen Jin’s voice was filled with worry. Before he could hang up the call, she had already heard the sound of a car starting.

Hearing that, her heart clenched. She quickly instructed him: “Brother, I won’t leave. Drive safely. Don’t rush…I’m fine!”

The person on the phone paused for a second before his voice came back: “I know.”

Wen Jin ended the call and immediately dialed Gu Kai’s number, informing him they had found Wen Ran. Just now, aside from Mo Xiuchen who received Wen Ran’s call and knew her whereabouts, everyone else was still searching for her throughout G City.

Having alerted Gu Kai, they contacted Qin Mu and Luo Haofeng separately. Not a minute had passed before Mo Xiuchen’s phone rang. He picked up and said: “I’m with Ranran,” before ending the call.
