Chapter 586: Promise me 585
Wen Ran tried her best to stay calm, but her limbs slowly turned cold.
Beside her, Mo Xiuchen tightened his grip around her hand. Lowering his gaze to look at her for a moment, he then simply raised his arm to wrap her in his embrace, using this method to chase the fear out of her heart.
“Ranran, don’t worry.”
His voice, low and gentle, was comforting. The turmoil in Wen Ran’s heart gradually subsided with his words and his breath.
A smile spread across Wen Ran’s lips, and she softly replied, “I’m fine.”
This situation was somewhat expected.
Fu Jingyi had always been very confident in his abilities. He had spent many years researching the terrifying ‘poison’ he planted in her body – a poison more fearsome than cancer and even more dreadful than the viral weapon created by the Japanese during the war.
Either she had to find a man to detoxify her, or she could wait for her death, watch as the virus ravaged her organs. In the end, not only would her brain shrink, but her spleen would fail, leading to her death…
Of course, if her father and the others found a way to neutralize the ‘poison’ in her, that would be another story.
When Fu Jingyi told her about this, Wen Ran vaguely hoped that Fu Jingyi’s experiment would fail, that her condition would not become as severe as he described. But now, it seems Fu Jingyi’s experiment was very successful.
Brown mentioned something more, but she didn’t take it in. On the surface she appeared calm, but inwardly her thoughts were scattered.
It wasn’t until Mo Xiuchen’s voice concluded in her ear that she snapped back to reality. She looked at him blankly, clearly hadn’t heard what he had said; she only recognized his voice.
A painful pang hit Mo Xiuchen’s heart. A gentle smile curved his lips as he said softly, “Ranran, let’s go back to the ward.”
“Oh!”
Wen Ran’s eyes flickered, and she found her voice again.
Gu Yan accompanied them back to the ward. A nurse came in with a bag of fluids, gave Wen Ran an injection, and put her on an IV drip. Wen Ran lay quiet, not asking any questions, simply cooperating with the nurse.
“Mo Xiuchen, stay with Ranran. I’ll come back later.”
After the nurse left, Gu Yan gazed at the IV bag for a moment, then gently patted Wen Ran’s head and gave his order.
Mo Xiuchen sat on the edge of the bed, his large hand gently holding Wen Ran’s. His deep eyes gazing tenderly at her, revealing depths of love and heartfelt concern.
Hearing Gu Yan’s instruction, he nodded, his gaze never leaving Wen Ran’s face. “Dad, go ahead with your business. I’ll stay with Ranran.”
He would always be with her, always!
Wen Ran also smiled in return, “Dad, don’t worry. I’m fine with Mo Xiuchen.”
After Gu Yan left, Mo Xiuchen gently stroked Wen Ran’s delicate hand and whispered, “Ranran, I’ll always stay by your side.”
Looking deep into his eyes, as if falling into an endless warmth, her heart felt inexplicably moist. Was it right to keep Mo Xiuchen by her side?
In the near future, her physical functions will fail and her memories will rapidly fade. Watching such a transformation would be agonizing for Mo Xiuchen.
But she couldn’t bear to push him away again. Selfishly, she wished for him to stay by her side. Only when he was near did she feel a hint of safety.
A gleam of sorrow flashed in Mo Xiuchen’s eyes. His gaze became even more profound, and his tone became more gentle. “Ranran, I know you’re heartbroken to hear such news. You probably couldn’t hear anything else they said afterward. But I was there, listening very seriously. They have devised several plans to cure you. So, don’t be afraid, and don’t lose hope.”
“Didn’t Ah Kai say it? Aside from medical treatment, inner strength also plays a key role in defeating the disease. Promise me, don’t put too much pressure on yourself, and don’t lose confidence in yourself, okay?”
Mo Xiuchen’s heart was also in turmoil. Ever since Gu Yan informed him of the medical results at noon, his mind was in chaos.
Right now, he was merely pretending to be calm, hoping to ease Wen Ran’s fear. He couldn’t remember exactly what he had said.
Listening to his comforting words, Wen Ran felt a rush of mixed emotions. Seeing the gentle and affectionate light in his eyes, she subconsciously moistened her lips and answered softly, “Okay.”
A spark lit up in Mo Xiuchen’s eyes, more excited than before. “Ranran, you will get better.”
You will.
He said to himself with absolute certainty, as if trying to reassure himself.
“Yep!”
Wen Ran nodded. Regardless of whether she could recover in the end, she would do her utmost to fight the disease with him by her side.
Even if she could be with him for just one more day, one more hour, or one more minute, that would be enough.
“Do you want to get some sleep?”
Mo Xiuchen gazed tenderly at her for a moment before asking softly.
Wen Ran smiled faintly, “I slept in the afternoon, so I’m not tired.”
Mo Xiucen glanced at the rows of magazines and newspapers not far away. “Then, maybe you’d like to read something to pass the time.”
“You read to me.”
Wen Ran followed his gaze, indeed, there were some magazines and newspapers. Without a second glance, she fixated her gaze on his handsome face and the words left her lips.
Mo Xiuchen was a bit surprised, but soon a soft curve crawled up to his lips and he readily agreed, “No problem.”
He was more than willing to do anything for her. Moreover, he was happy that she needed him, depended on him. He released her hand and got up to select two magazines, then asked her when he returned to the bed:
“Ranran, which one do you want to hear.”
“This one.”
Wen Ran pointed at one of them. It was a youth reading material. Mo Xiuchen gave an approving smile, put the other one aside and took another glance at the IV bag hanging next to her bed before starting to read a story from the magazine.
His deep magnetic voice filled the air, drawing a smile onto Wen Ran’s face and her eyes sparkled brightly.
Having him read to her was definitely a wise choice. Not only was his voice pleasing, he was very expressive. Even if he wasn’t telling a story, just hearing him talk made her heart melt.
The normally cold hospital ward felt warm because of his voice. Wen Ran leaned back onto the bed, her eyes half-closed, her body starting to relax, exuding an air of laziness.
By the time he read the second story, her eyes slowly closed. Even though she couldn’t see his handsome face, his voice alone was enough to touch her heart.
