Chapter 18
At this time, Zhao Qiang walked up behind Lin Xin while munching on a rice ball. He naively asked, “What are you worried about?”
Apparently, he didn’t notice that she had been struggling to shake the door open to no avail. Lin Xin gave him an icy glare and coldly replied, “Still eating, you only know how to eat! We’re locked up in this cafeteria which means we’ll be caught by tomorrow for sure!”
Zhao Qiang finally realized the gravity of the situation. He wolfed down the rice ball in his hand in just three bites, then wiped his hand clean on his shirt and responded, “What should I do?”
“What can we do?” Lin Xin said angrily. “We can only wait for tomorrow and be found.”
Zhao Qiang said in remorse, “If I knew this would happen, I never would’ve taken those rice balls.” He shook his head and strolled around the cafeteria. After walking pass Lin Xin, he finally spoke up, “If you get caught, then you’re caught. It’s no big deal, we’ll probably just have to spend a day or two reading review books.”
If that’s how it is, then what else can they do?
Lin Xin looked at the innocent Zhao Qiang. She didn’t want to tell him the truth, but now that they’re on the same boat, if she doesn’t inform him, he will only end up dragging her down.
Lin Xin asked, “Do You really think it’s that simple?”
“What do you mean by that?” Zhao Qiang couldn’t understand the meaning behind Lin Xin’s words.
She went on to explain, “We just saw the interactions between the Dean and Lin Xinyu, and afterwards, he locked us up in the house. Do you think our punishment will simply be to review a few books?”
Zhao Qiang seemed to understand a bit of what she hinted at. “What happened between the Dean and Lin Xinyu? And what would he possibly want to do with us?”
This was like casting pearls before swine! How could such a dimwit exist in this world? Talking to him was simply insulting her IQ. The Dean’s attitude towards Lin Xinyu definitely causes suspicion.
It was so obvious that she wondered if Zhao Qiang’s head was made of wood.
Suddenly, a flash of inspiration sparked in Lin Xin’s mind. Even if she saw what the Dean didn’t want her to see, wouldn’t she still be alright?
Lin Xin glanced at Zhao Qiang who ran back into the kitchen, screaming for dinner. For a moment, she actually thought his behavior was lovely. All she has to do tomorrow was pretend that she was as stupid as Zhao Qiang. If she was questioned, she just had to admit that she saw the Dean and Lin Xinyu entering the dining hall. As for the rest of what she witnessed, she doesn’t have to say anything more of it.
After coming up with a solution, Lin Xin gave a deep sigh of relief and finally dropped her troubles.
At this time, Zhao Qiang, who had crumbs all over his face, turned to Lin Xin and said, “Come here and eat. Even if you don’t, you’ll get punished anyways. If you don’t eat now, you might not get a chance to have a meal later.”
When Lin Xin thought of the Dean’s actions, she felt as if her heart was stuffed uncomfortably, causing her to lose her appetite. She threw the rice ball in her hand back into the pot then sat on a chair right next to the table. Lin Xin put her weary head on the table as she fell asleep.
After Zhao Qiang finished up all the rice in the pot, he patted his belly contentedly, then sat across her before laying his head on the table to rest. Unable to sleep, he looked up and asked Lin Xin, “Are you asleep?”
Lin Xin was too lazy to deal with him so she outright ignored him. When the boy didn’t receive any response, he assumed that she already fell asleep.
Zhao Qiang was quite full. He walked around the table and the cafeteria for several laps before sitting down. Unable to stand his boredom, he had the urge to call Lin Xin again, but he was afraid to provoke her anger if she woke up. Finally, the boy rested his head on the table and fell asleep.
After a while, Lin Xin heard Zhao Qiang’s steady breathing. She opened her eyes and looked at the chubby boy who slept opposite of her; Lin Xin couldn’t help but envy him for being able to dream peacefully.
Moonlight poured through the wooden windows and fell on the concrete floor, making the room faintly visible. As Lin Xin gazed at the light that poured in like water, her mind was troubled with a million thoughts.
Lin Xin couldn’t sleep well that night. The moment the cafeteria lady unlocked the door, she immediately woke up.
