Chapter 43: Power to Decide Another’s Fate

The mistress felt as if her heart had been knocked down; she burst into tears as she held onto Lin Xin’s hand tightly and pulled the frail girl into a comforting embrace. “Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid. Everything will be alright, yes, everything will be alright.”

Lin Xin shivered in her arms like a frightened kitten, holding tightly to the woman’s arm as if afraid she would be abandoned and thrown away. The mistress’ hand gently touched her back while humming a beautiful lullaby. After a while, Lin Xin seemed to fall into a deep sleep, but her hand that tightly grasped the woman’s hand didn’t loosen.

Outside the building at the courtyard, five policemen interviewed the children one by one as to whether they had received any ‘preferential treatment’ from the Dean. After discovering that no other child had this issue, an officer made some notes while another one brought the Dean into the police car. Meanwhile a policemen reported the situation to the butler, Lin Bo. He told the butler that he hoped Lin Xin could go with him to the police station to collect more information once the girl had recovered to her senses.

Lin Bo looked at the two boys who stood in the distance whilst observing them, along with the mistress who hugged the girl. He asked, “Will that child be alright?”

The police nodded and said, “She acted in self-defense. She’ll be fine, but we have to thoroughly investigate the case and ask her to personally tell the story.”

Lin Bo immediately took out a business card and handed it to the police: “I don’t want you to involve this child again and trouble her. If you run into any problems, call this phone number. He’ll take care of everything.”

The police wanted to say more, but in the end he swallowed his words. This case had a high value. After being warned, the officer made a call to the phone number on the business card; the man on the other line said that this case will be ‘perfect.’

What did he mean by ‘perfect’? It means that all the procedures will be handled perfectly according to the wishes of the defending party. The officer knew this case was a hot potato, but he never expected it to bring so many benefits. A girl without any previous backing ended up cutting a man’s flesh with a knife, all in self-defense. It was considered a fortune that she was able to encounter a powerful adopter to put things into place. If it was just a normal family, it would be difficult to guarantee that the Dean would be imprisoned, and the girl would have been accused instead of losing her mind for committing a crime.

The police officer placed the business card into his shirt pocket and turned to leave. Meanwhile, the two boys came over; the taller boy walked towards Lin Bo while whispering in his ear.

The butler nodded and replied, “Yes, yes…”

After receiving his instructions, Lin Bo told the police, “Officer Wang, I hope that you handle this case impartially. That man had caused us great harm. I hope that I won’t ever see this person again in my lifetime.”

Is this to sentence the criminal for a lifetime? The officer noticed the teenager stare back with a cold, expressionless look, as if to forbid any kind of resistance. Officer Wang thought to herself, ‘This is an important person; his momentum at such a young age can’t be ignored. When he matures, who knows what he’ll become.’

She respectfully bowed and returned to the police car to give further instruction to the other officers. Afterwards, the police car drove away from the orphanage.

Lin Xinyu stared at the cars that drove off into the distance. There were plenty of thoughts running through his mind; only one phone call had brought all five police cars. Not only that, the teenager’s words caused the officers to treat him very respectfully. And based on what Lin Bo said, did that mean they would be able to sentence the Dean to a lifetime in prison?

Just a word from the teenager could decide a person’s fate, and yet all he could do was cover the wound on his face.
