Chapter 45: Less than a Dog
Lin Xin had been pretending to be asleep this whole time; she closed her eyes and held on tightly to the mistress’ hands, knowing that the Dean’s life and death was affected by this lady’s sense of justice for the child. Lin Xin trusted in her judgement.
Just a few hours ago, the girl’s provocative eyes aroused the Dean’s suspicions, which was why he slipped into her bath while Lin Xinyu was away.
Lin Xin was expecting his arrival so she was already wearing the bath towel that Lin Bo gave her and sat on a chair, waiting for him.
“Are you here?” Lin Xin asked the moment the man had entered the room.
Ever since her first attempt at escaping, the Dean never saw her as a normal child. The talent she showed today caused him to panic, and her provocative gaze always made him feel that things weren’t as simple as they appeared.
When he recalled how sickly she appeared the past few days, he couldn’t help but think, ‘Was her ill appearance all a lie? But so what if she was pretending? After eating the medicine I gave her, she will surely become foolish over time. She won’t remember who she is, and will no longer be able to accomplish simple daily tasks, much less taking care of herself.’
‘All her tricks are useless.’
The Dean directly told her, “If you want to leave the orphanage, then go ahead. Once you leave this door, we will no longer have anything to do with each other, but remember, it’s up to me whether they can adopt you and naturally I can have them give up on you.”
Lin Xin stood up and circled around the Dean. She smiled and asked mockingly, “Is that so? Why do I feel like it’s the opposite? From what I saw, you were submissive like a dog around them.”
When the Dean heard the word ‘dog’ his body became tense and he was fuming with anger. He glared at Lin Xin and said fiercely, “Who are you calling a dog?”
Lin Xin’s purpose was to upset him, but she didn’t expect him to react so fiercely. She decided to give a bit more force and said, “That’s just who you are!” Pei! She spat on his face and looked down on him with arrogance and disdain. “In my eyes, you’re not as good as a dog. The words ‘dog’ and ‘loyalty’ have nothing to do with you.”
The Dean was enraged by her words and wanted to throw her down, just like he did several times in the past, but this time, he wanted to ensure that she could no longer get up from the ground. But his hands suddenly stopped midair and he said with a laugh, “Do you want me to hit you so you could go to the family and complain?” He bent down and whispered to her ears, “Rest assured, I won’t be fooled by you.”
Lin Xin’s face turned pale and her eyes seemed panic, as if afraid that he had discovered her lies.
Her nervousness excited the Dean. He pushed Lin Xin to the ground, then sat on the chair she had been using previously. His lips were raised as he slowly spoke, “Do you know why they came to visit this orphanage? It’s because my uncle worked in their company and he had invited them over to introduce them to me. By the way, I will earn more money. My uncle has been working for them for more than ten years. Between a rebellious little girl and a loyal employee, who do you think they will believe? Everything you have right now is what I have given you. If you try to leave, I can destroy you myself.”
Lin Xin stepped back, as if unable to accept the truth behind his words. She held her clothes tightly as she looked up at the Dean in horror and helplessness.
A kind of lingering pleasure rushed to the Dean’s heart. He pushed up his black-rimmed glasses and smiled, “Why are you afraid? Don’t think that just because you have a good memory, your cleverness will be able to control everything that happens. Being too conceited isn’t good. The world isn’t as simple as you think it is, as if you can survive there just by being able to recite two books. If you follow that family, you will be able to live the rich. As long as you forget everything that happened here, you can live the life you want. There will only be a good relationship between us. If you don’t agree to this, I will make sure that you stay here forever.”
